Chapter Text

Wirt is wearing the same clothes as the last time Beatrice saw him, but he looks different, older.

Though not old enough.

He should only have returned to the Unknown as an elder, but if it had been more than a decade it was too much.

She certainly looks different to him, she now has arms instead of wings and a face he has never looked at directly, but still he calls her by name before she says anything.

“Car accident,” he answers the question she hasn’t asked.

“Oh. My condolences.”

“Um, thanks?”

“Mine was in a fire, only my mother remembers the flames, apparently with the rest of us the smoke filled our lungs while we slept.”

“I know.”

“How the hell do you know that? I’m sure I never told you.”

He looks a little embarrassed for a moment.

“I looked you up, in records. Old news papers and stuff. It took a lot of research but eventually I found you, I went to your grave a few times. I needed to know if you were real or not.”

“Did you bring me flowers?”

“Yes.”

“Where are they?”

“I meant I brought them to your grave, not now.”

“It’s kind of rude to show up at an old friend’s house and not even bother bringing flowers.”

“Really?”

“Yes, there’s a wood nearby with some, I can show you where to get some for you to give me and fix your mistake.”

“How kind.” he said more amused than annoyed.

She walks in front of him, at least two steps ahead, that she almost doesn’t hear him say very quietly:

“I missed you.”

She hesitates for a second before saying louder than him and also with more confidence:

“I missed you too. We’re here.”

She extends her hand to his, and he takes it. And so the two of them enter the woods holding hands.
