I'm honestly kinda lost at words. Cause like. This is literally what a post-canon would be like. This is the canon I want for both of them. And it's the only scenario that makes sense. And the only that Bill honestly deserves.
I very much like the tone of this story. Like it's literally soaked with this tiredeness and tries of better life from Ford. The grayed-out hatred, annoyance, like trying to smack a bug from Stanley. And desperation, reaching out from the one who was completely crumbled from the inside out after the eternities of therapethic sessions from Bill. The post-Weirdmageddon world where everyone doesn't know how to live but where some people found their own relief, built their lifes from anew despite everything.
And to where a triangle, full of opened up wound is suddenly thrown to change something in himself.
I like how he is still that asshole. How his endless ego is still there, and he STILL thinks of himself on the first place. How despite of being thrown face down by the realizations of his traumas, his mistakes, he still isn't even relatively close to changing. How depite everything, he can't built his life anew like some people managed to. He is different, because the level of his damage is deeper than any possible one, and the way he is trying to repare the broken seems like a panicked desparation, like a man drowned in nostalgia who can't bring himself to throw away something damaged beyond repair, can't turn away from the only source of light in his life, because he has no clue where to find a new one. Because it's so much easier to hold onto something old than to walk along the new path.
Dunno, I don't feel sorry for him for a moment. It's honestly so pathetic and pityful of him to reach out like that, and so powerful of Ford to never give in. It's not manipulation this time, but it won't get either of them anywhere, and sometimes, truly, you just need to learn to let go. Understand that not everything is able to repair itself, no matter how hard you try. They might have worked out in some universe, but this one is just that, and Bill can't do anything about it. I like how he sorta understands it at the end and honestly it's all decided already. He only needs to continue getting better and understanding himself before he is really ready for a new life. Like, a whole new life. Without the same people or same mistakes.
I find it perfect, how the attention was brought to this topic of "i accept your apology, but i don't forgive you" coz HELL. YES. Once again, he can't restore it. They just plastered the wounds, closed the dark chest of what had been and should never look back.
Ford still missing past times - perfect. It's merely a feeling, but no sense of longing is here anymore. He may remeber it till his dying days, but he'll never crave for it to return. He found his own happinnes and he doesn't need Bill to feel happy.
Bill trying to woo Ford, all those presents, little scribbles he's been leaving, those kinda stuff - on top of the world. He may follow a regular pattern of a desperate ex, but it won't get him anywhere. But at least he's coming to realization that he just enjoyed Ford being happy.
And the final talk between them, ironically, on a new year's eve, like some kinda opportunity, a chance, for all new things to come; for Bill to actually get somewhere utterly unfamiliar but with learned lessons. It's just it: a lesson. You can't fix the past, but you can move forward and never repeat what have already happened, step forward without looking back.God, this all is just perfect. Made me SOOOOO happy to see such truth spit in our faces. Honestly, there needs to be more stories like that. It's very down-to-earth and real. Hits just in the right places.
