Like a Gardenia

Summary:

‘A relationship that could be anything but doesn’t end in friendship’

That’s the best way Kyle could describe it. He never imagined they could be anything more than just acquaintances.

But the stars seem to think otherwise. Fuck the universe, really. And fuck Craig and his stupidly attractive voice.

Seriously, it’s not fair.

Chapter Text

Everyone was talking about it.

Craig and Tweek. They broke up at the end of middle school, yet everyone was still talking about it.

“It’s been 2 weeks since high school started, why is everyone still talking about this?” He turned to Stan. They just passed some girls and overheard them gossiping.

Gossiping about the same thing they had been since people found out about the break up.

It was getting annoying.

“I don’t know dude, people are noisy and after all they were the only gay couple in our school. They had been dating since elementary and all.” Stan shrugged as they made their way to the lockers. “Don’t you wanna know what happened?”

“Not really, no,” He said, rolling his eyes. “Besides, that kind of relationship was bound to fall apart.”

“Why do you say that? Me and Wendy had been dating since back then too.” Stan said dismissively while opening his locker.

“Yeah… on and off, not exactly the healthiest relationship, dude..” Kyle said as he walked to his locker, only three down from Stan’s.

He loves Stan, seriously, he does, after all these years he’s still his best friend, but he can be so stupid.

Wendy is so nice and smart too, they get along now, way better than before. So he likes her, he just thinks they’re not made for each other like that.

“Shut up, man, we haven’t broken up in five months now.” Stan turned to him while Kyle opened his locker.

Five months is the longest they’ve been together in their on and off relationship, Kyle can’t deny that. Still…

“Whatever you say, Stan..” said Kyle while rolling his eyes and closing the locker. “Doesn’t matter, let’s just go.”

“Fine, I still don’t get why you’re even bothered by this.” He said, closing his locker too and taking off to class.

He’s not bothered. It’s just annoying that this is the only thing talked in school.

While he was curious about why they broke up exactly, he wasn’t going to just stick his nose into their business, and he wasn’t going to admit that to Stan either.

Like the rest of the school apparently. Rolling his eyes as he followed Stan.

The sound of people talking was starting to dissolve as more and more were getting to class.

Kyle thought he would have a peaceful morning, going to class with no problems. Boy, was he wrong..

“You guys! You guys,” There he was, the pain in the ass, Eric Cartman. “You guys… guess… what..” He said through his panting, having been running to catch up to them.

Kyle rolled his eyes, not stopping for him and kept walking to class.

“What’s up, dude?” Stan said, still walking as Cartman joined them.

Having regained most of his breathing, “Guess you guys” he said while taking a too-joyous look on his face.

He really didn’t want to deal with this. He just wanted to go to class. Peacefully. But when has the universe been on Kyle’s side.

“Just spit it out, fatass!” He said, getting frustrated already.

“Well, someone’s cranky. What? Is dear old Kahl on his period?” He turned and whispered to Stan “He’s unreasonable on that time of the month, huh?”

“Shut the fuck up, dude,” Now he really was getting frustrated. “Just say what you wanted to say already!”

“Calm down, Kahl, don’t want you to pop a vein.”

“Ugh!” He threw his arms in the air and let them fall in frustration, then started walking faster.

“Seriously, what’s with the Jew?” Cartman asked, raising a brow and turning to Stan.

“I don’t know, dude” Stan shrugged.

“Whatever, so i was talking to Bebe and…”

Kyle tuned him out as they finally got to class, just before the bell rang.

Finally lunch break.

He was so hungry. After all he did skip breakfast, it was Ike’s fault really.

Their parents weren’t home that morning, something about their work or whatever, so Kyle was left to do the breakfast, but Ike just had to somehow ruin that.

He was making his way to the table to put their breakfast on when his little brother came into the room running babbling about something he lost. And of course he didn’t watch, or care for that matter, where he was going so he bumped into him.

The eggs went flying and the plates went crashing down.

All in all, they didn’t get any breakfast.

“Dude, why so fast?” Stan appeared beside him chuckling and draped an arm around his shoulders.

He really had grown over summer. Stan used to be shorter than him up until the end of middle school.

Honestly Kyle was one of the tallest boys in middle school. While he’s still pretty tall, 5’9” is tall, ok?, he ended up being surpassed by quite a few of his peers.

Craig Tucker for example, he used to be like 5’5” before summer, now he’s suddenly 6’1”, how does one grow that much in such a short time.

Although Stan is not as tall as Craig, he still surpassed Kyle, Stan used to be 5’4”, now he’s 5’11”.

Kyle himself has grown a few inches, after all he used to be 5’6”, but still it’s not as impressive as those two. At least it’s better than Cartman who only grew an inch and is now 5’7”.

“I’m hungry, Stan,” he said while pushing the doors to the cafeteria open. “I skipped breakfast today.”

The cafeteria was already packed, everyone was so noisy.

“Why?” Stan asked as they found themselves in line. At least the food smelled kind of decent today. It might’ve been just to him though because of the hunger.

“Because of Ike, dude,” he felt his frustration coming back. “Let’s not talk about this actually. I’m too hungry to contain my anger right now.”

At that Stan started chuckling so he gave him an annoyed look. “Whatever you say, dude” he gave up while raising his hand in a peace gesture.

“And then he said ‘well, if you’re going to—“

“Oh! Hey fellas! Over here!” The blond shouted and started waving to them, effectively interrupting Cartman mid talking.

So they made their way over where Cartman, Butters and Tolkien were sitting at a table.

“Butters, goddamn it! I was in the middle of the best story I ever heard! Don’t interrupt—“

“Hi guys.”

“Hey, Tolkien.” he said and taking a sit next to him.

“‘Sup, dude!” Stan greeted him too while taking a sit in front of Kyle and next to Butters.

EY! Stop interrupting me!”

“How are you two? We didn’t see each other today.” Tolkien said while taking a bite of his pizza.

“Nothing much, dude,” Stan shrugged. “Just class, annoying, boring class.”

A smile began stretching on Tolkien’s face. “Yeah, same.”

EY! You guys! Don’t ignore me!”

“You guys hear that?” Kyle asked, not even paying any mind to Cartman. He just wanted to eat.

“Must’ve been the wind.” said someone as a body sat next to him.

“Craig, dude, when did you get here?” Stan asked, a little bit surprised at the sudden appearance of Craig and Clyde who sat on Craig’s other side.

“Right now.” he responded with the monotone and nasally voice he always had, although it’s gotten a lot deeper since hitting puberty.

“Fuck you, you guys! And listen to me, i now have to start from the beginning,” Cartman huffed and crossed his arms, but instantly became more animated. “So I was walking around the…”

Yeah, everyone tuned him out. Except for Butters, he always listens to him for some reason.
