Work Text:
It was a captivating summer day in the Fire Nation, where the warm sun embraced the land, and the air was fragrant with blooming fire lilies. Prince Zuko and his beloved, Lady Akiko, wandered through the sacred serenity garden of his great-great-grandmother, Fire Lady Aguya—a place usually closed to all, now opened by Zuko’s great-grandfather, Azulon, believing it to be the right time.
As they entered the lush garden, cherry-red fire blossoms swayed in the breeze, and a koi pond reflected the sun.
“It’s stunning here, isn’t it, Zuky?” Akiko murmured, reaching for his hand.
Zuko, admiring her jade-green gaze, squeezed her hand gently. They settled at an ornate stone table, savoring tea as the fragrant steam curled around them.
“I feel at peace here,” she said.
“Yes, especially because of Granny Aguya,” Zuko replied. “Her spirit saved my life five years ago today.”
Akiko wondered aloud what it would be like to meet her. Zuko expressed his amazement about his great-great-grandmother’s spirit protecting him and mused about the connections with their family histories.
In thoughtful silence, they imagined the woman who had shaped their world into peace instead of war.
A sudden, searing brightness erupted from the stone table, flooding the garden with an otherworldly glow.
Akiko gasped and scrambled back. “What in the name of the First Fire?!”
Zuko shielded his eyes. “I don’t know!”
The glow, crackling with energy, intensified before surging toward them like a tidal wave. A powerful force yanked them forward, spiraling through nothingness, and light streaked past like fire in the sky.
Then—impact. They crashed hard onto solid ground, breath stolen by the jarring thud.
Silence enveloped them. Zuko groaned, blinking open his eyes, expecting his familiar garden. But something was off.
The air was thick with fresh incense, and the sounds of palace life were absent. The garden was eerily unchanged yet brand new—the trees were younger, the koi pond smaller, and the stone table without its usual cracks.
Voices drifted closer.
Zuko turned, heart racing. Two palace attendants in historical Fire Nation robes stood at the entrance, eyes wide with shock. Beyond them, a tall woman commanded attention.
Zuko's breath caught.
This was Fire Lady Aguya—alive, in her prime, with striking golden eyes that locked onto his.
This was the past, and he had no idea how to return.
Zuko felt frozen as Fire Lady Aguya’s golden eyes locked onto him. Then, her expression changed. “Zuko?” she whispered, igniting something in him.
Beside him, Akiko tensed. Aguya’s gaze shifted to her. “And… Akiko?”
Akiko gripped Zuko’s sleeve, her shock evident. “She knows our names,” she whispered.
Zuko was speechless. Aguya’s aura shifted, caught between awe and recognition.
“I’ve seen you before,” she said, regaining her composure. “Not in this world, but in my dreams.”
Akiko’s eyes widened. “You’ve dreamed of us?”
“For years now,” Aguya confirmed, her gaze lingering on Akiko.
Zuko’s throat tightened as confusion washed over him. Aguya turned to her attendants, ordering them to secretly escort Zuko and Akiko to her private dining room.
Despite the unease in his chest, Zuko followed Aguya through the stunning palace halls. Her regal presence was unwavering, yet inside her, questions surged: Why were they here? Why now?
Zuko’s pulse quickened, the palace feeling eerily unfamiliar. Akiko laced her fingers through his, offering the comfort he desperately needed. Her own reaction was different.
While Zuko grappled with the eeriest familiarity of the palace, Akiko was in quiet awe, sensing the energy of a past that lingered in every flicker of torchlight and polished tile. She glanced at Aguya, who carried herself like a queen, though Akiko noticed the subtle tension in her clenched fingers.
"Are you alright?" Akiko asked softly.
“I’m not sure,” Aguya admitted, her voice carrying a vulnerability that Akiko respected.
Still processing everything, Zuko expected Aguya to demand answers, but she remained composed as they ventured deeper into the palace. She searched their faces, holding back unspoken questions, before leading them into her private dining chamber, its lavish decor thick with anticipation.
The room was quiet but charged with an undeniable tension as Aguya finally broke the silence.
“Now, tell me. Why are you here?” Aguya's voice had an urgent edge.
Zuko felt his heart race. Akiko squeezed his hand, supporting him as she spoke. "Aguya, we don’t know how we got here. We were in your garden, and everything just changed."
Aguya's eyes narrowed as she studied them. “You’re not from here." Then, with a tremor in her voice, “You… look like them. No, you are them.”
Zuko froze. "Who?"
Aguya's gaze softened slightly. "You… are a descendant of my bloodline."
His heart raced as realization dawned. Aguya turned to Akiko with intensity. "You will one day carry the mantle of Fire Lady."
Akiko gasped, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. Aguya had seen their faces in her dreams; they were pieces of a puzzle falling into place.
"You’ve known," Zuko whispered.
"I didn’t understand before," Aguya nodded, her eyes distant. "I thought you were just visions of a future that hadn’t yet come."
As they all settled at the low table, Aguya regarded Zuko and Akiko with an intensity that suggested she’d already begun piecing things together. After a moment, she broke the silence.
“I can think of only one reason you're here. Do you have a message from the future I need to hear now?” she asked directly.
Zuko and Akiko exchanged glances. Akiko’s eyes softened. “Aguya, we've come to speak of something significant. We’ve seen the darkness growing in Sozin’s heart. You must sense it.”
Aguya's face revealed sorrow. “Yes, but I cannot see how to prevent it. I love him, but I fear what he might become.”
Zuko felt for her. “Aguya, your love is the key. As Akiko and I vowed to always stand by each other, you and Sozin must choose love, even when darkness threatens.”
Aguya’s eyes held confusion and hope. “How can my love change him when war stirs in his heart?”
“The love you share is a promise,” Zuko said. “It’s a commitment to stand by him, showing him that love can lead to the future he dreams of without war.”
Akiko added, “Your love will guide him to redemption. Stay loyal, and together, you’ll reshape the future.”
Aguya realized, “My love for Sozin is not just a bond. It’s a force that can bring him back.”
Zuko smiled gently. “Yes, your love is the key to a brighter future.”
As the final words of their conversation hung in the air, the room seemed to pulse with energy. Zuko and Akiko exchanged glances, a sense of urgency rising between them. They had shared their message, but they knew their time here was limited.
A soft glow gathered around them, just as in the serenity garden. Akiko's hand tightened around Zuko’s, but before they could speak, the warmth of the glow intensified, swirling in patterns around them.
"Aguya," Zuko began, his voice full of gratitude, "we'll carry your message. Stay true to your heart, and Sozin will find his way."
Aguya nodded, her golden eyes filled with a quiet resolve. "You have my thanks, both of you."
With that, the light surged once more, enveloping Zuko and Akiko. Their bodies were gently pulled, a force stronger than anything they had felt before.
In the blink of an eye, the world around them shifted. The glow faded, and the familiar tranquility of the serenity garden welcomed them back. The koi pond shimmered in the light, and the fire blossoms swayed gently in the breeze.
Zuko and Akiko were home, back in their own time.
The only remnants of their journey were their memories and the feeling that they had somehow changed the course of history without ever genuinely leaving it.
