Chapter Text
The day Kremy died started out like any other.
Gideon and Kremy had woken up in their shared tent after Kremys had been destroyed in a storm the week before. Gideon had woken up first his arm wrapped snug around Kremys waist and admired his best friend and how comfortable he looked wrapped up in his arms, in a totally bro way of course, it’s not gay to want to hold your best friend tight to your chest to keep them warm especially since said best friend is cold blooded. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and Kremy soon woke up and started to extract himself from Gideon’s hold to which Gideon responds by unhooking his arms from around Kremys waist reluctantly, mourning the loss of the cold body pressed up against his side.
“Morning Gid.” Kremys voice was still laced with sleep, as he stretches his arms above his head causing his shirt to ride up which Gideon quickly looks away from.
“Morning Kremy, what’s our plans for today.” Gideon sat up and rummaged around his bag at the end of the tent for his comb.
“We’re a couple hours out from Goldfog we’ll probably get there a bit before night falls again, so we’re going to head there to rent a room and do a little bit of scamming.” A sharp grin stretched across Kremys face as he looked at Gideon, clearly excited for a couple rounds of poker, at this point Gideon’s just excited for a couple of drinks and an actual bed for the night but whatever keeps Kremy happy.
“Alright man, I’ll pack up the tent and then we can head out.” Gideon crawled out of the tent and Kremy followed behind him.
“Well not so fast I’ve still not got breakfast into you, and I need to keep my engine running or else he won’t be able to fight for me, so pass me out my pack and get a fire going before you do anything else.” Kremy walked past him and gave him a pat on the shoulder as he walked past laughing as he heard Gideon’s stomach rumbling at the mention of food. Gideon quickly past Kremy his pack and lot the fire before turning to go take down their tent.
Five minutes later the tent was down packed up and placed into a bag before Gideon sat down and watched Kremy cook and what a mesmerising sight it was. Kremy worked efficiently cutting peppers and doing something to the eggs, though he was quick you could tell there was love and thought put into making the meal.
“So, what are you making, Kremy?” Gideon’s mouth was watering from the scent of the food not realising how hungry he was until now.
“It’s nothing fancy, just some fried eggs and vegetables, we’re probably going to need to get more ingredients before we leave the town tomorrow because we’re running low, also we should grab more medical supplies after your fight the other night we’re down to a couple of plasters and a bandage.” Kremy rolled his eyes as he remembered Gideon’s antics from the last town they stayed in.
“Okay but how was I supposed to know she was married or that her husband was going to come after me?” Gideon tried to defend himself not very well, but the attempt was there.
“The ring on her finger may have been a give away or you maybe could have asked, and you beat up people who flirt with me when I’m clearly not interested and we’re not even married!” Kremy argued back as he started scooping the food into plates.
“Well yeah that’s my job to defend you!” Gideon said, ignoring how it was only half the truth and that in reality seeing people flirt with Kremy makes him agitated beyond belief, even thinking about someone else being by Kremys side for to long is enough to send into a frenzy and cling to Kremys side for the rest of the day.
“Well, it’s also a partners job to defend their spouse, now shut up and eat your breakfast we’ve got a long trip ahead of us.” Kremy then proceeded to dig into his smaller portion of breakfast to which Gideon followed suit. As expected, the food was so delicious Gideon could cry and he ended up going back for two more rounds before letting Kremy pack the rest up for them to eat on the trip and the two of them setting on their way.
The trip through the forest was filled with light conversation, they only stopped for the occasional break and after Gideon tripped over a branch and ate shit to which Kremy needed a couple minutes to calm down from his laughing fit which Gideon didn’t mind it was good to see Kremy so carefree. As the sun starts to set behind the mountains, they finally made it into Goldfog.
“Looks like all the stalls are already locked up for the night Gid looks like we’ll have to come back first thing tomorrow to get our things.” Kremy and Gideon walked through the town a cool breeze in the air foreshadowing the up incoming Winter.
“Come on quickly man I want to get a drink.” Gideon starts walking towards the inn Kremy keeping in step with him, while he does want a drink Gideon would also like out of the cold quickly while it doesn’t bother him, he doesn’t want his cold-blooded companion getting ill from staying out in the cold to long.
“Alright Gid, I swear when don’t you want a drink.” Kremy teased.
“When I have one in my hand.” Gideon joked back earning a shocked laugh from Kremy as he led the way to the inn. Once inside Kremy talked the inn keeper into giving them the room at a slightly lower price than what was offered and took the keys and made their way to their room on the second floor. The room was nice, it would want to be how much it was going for, it was warm with two beds at either ends of the room with thick blankets covering them, there also was a rectangular window on top of one of the beds so Gideon will most likely take that one.
“Oh, thank the good Baron this room is actually half decent if this was shit it would actually be my last straw.” Kremy flopped down onto one of the beds and set his bag of the side of the bed.
“Yeah, at lest we’ll get one good night of sleep before it’s back to camping.” Gideon walked over to the bed with the window and threw his bag down on top of it and started searching his bag for the coin pouch before coming up empty. Gideon felt a shiver of fear go down his spine as he realised, he doesn’t have their coin pouch.
“Hey Kremy, say it I didn’t have our coin pouch anymore how mad would you be?” Gideon turned around and asked Kremy the sincerest smile he could muster on his face.
“I wouldn’t be mad at all as I have the pouch still after we payed for the room dumbass.” Kremy shook his head at Gideon with a smirk really making him feel stupid.
“Ah right well do you want to go down to the bar?” Gideon already new the answer Kremy always went down with him to go take advantage of how drunk everyone was to get away with more scams.
“Come on, well the night is still young.” Kremy shook the coin pouch in between his fingers before hopping of the bed and heading to the bar Gideon following quickly behind.
Down at the bar Gideon grabbed himself rum and Kremy one of those fruity cocktail things he likes before depositing them onto the table in front in Kremy and slinging his arm behind the back of the chair Kremy had started a game of poker in. In front of him was three goblin, eladrin and kenku men, all three of them had clearly been here a good bit longer than they had given two out of three of them were drunk as a skunk and the kenku was about halfway there at this point. It was easy enough for Kremy to cheat and keep up conversation occasionally taking sips of his drink and Gideon thought none of them were the wiser until the kenku spoke up.
“Your clearly cheating!” The kenku accused slamming his cards down on the table as Kremy wins yet another game.
“I would never cheat a game of poker it takes the fun out of it don’t you think?” Kremy asked but the kenku clearly didn’t believe him. He looked like he was going to take a swing at Kremy so Gideon shifted his arm of the back of the chair and glared down at him getting the kenku to back down quickly.
“Now do you boys want to continue playing?” Kremy smile was friendly, but Gideon could tell after so many years as his bodyguard it was clearly fake, to big to be one of Kremys real small kind smiles.
“Fine, but no more cheating.” The kenku agreed probably still scared by Gideon’s presence to disagree with the lizardfolk. The game continued with Gideon occasionally getting up to grab him and Kremy some more drinks and Kremy sneakily changing his cards to gain the upper hand. At one point Gideon had gotten distracted by an eleven woman across the bar from him that had been making eyes at him durning the game flexing his muscles to show off and before he new it three hours had passed. He soon realised something was wrong with Kremy, he was slurring his speech when his drink wasn’t all that strong to be getting him that drunk, Gideon quickly started gathering up the coins and pulling Kremy up to stand. Once he was out of the chair Kremy staggered having to hold onto Gideon for support, Gideon looked him over and noticed his pupils were more dilated then usual and he was warm when usually his scales were cold as snow.
“Come on Kremy let’s get you up to the room.” Gideon put his arm under Kremys shoulders and held him tight to his side.
“Can we get water first everythings blurry and it’s giving me a splitting headache.” Kremy whined pushing himself more into Gideon’s side.
“Once I get you up to the room I’ll come back and grab you some water, okay?” Gideon whispered trying not to make Kremys headache any worse and started rubbing circles on his back.
“Alri-” Kremy was cut off when his body started to convulse.
“Kremy are you okay man!” Gideon yelled but Kremy couldn’t answer as he started throwing up on the floor the convulsions only getting worse before they suddenly all stopped. Gideon quickly checked Kremys pulse only to realise there wasn’t one, he could only feel the warmer than they should scales on his skin.
“Kremy come on man, wake up this isn’t funny, wake up we’ve got to go to to the market tomorrow to go get ingredients for your recipes, come on man we can even go find you more of those expensive cigarettes that you like, just please wake up!” Gideon isn’t usually a man to beg but while stood there the body of his best, no, his only friend, the only person who fucking matters to him, dead in his arms he begged with tears streaming down his face. He stopped begging when he heard laughter at the table they were just at, turning to see the kanku laughing with his buddies about how easy of a kill it was and how much Kremy had it coming. Gideon doesn’t really remember what happened after that all he can remember is blood, screams and fire before he comes back to himself in the middle of the burning inn dead bodies scattered around him and that smug bastard of a kanku’s body scattered across the bar. He gently grabs Kremys body and princess carries it out of the bar making sure nothing touches it before walking back into the forest. Gideon doesn’t know how long he was walking for but by the time he stops to sleep Kremys body is cold again. He didn’t grab any of there stuff before he left so Gideon just sits down under a tree and cuddles Kremys body as close as possible and cries silently until he falls asleep.
