I say a prayer with every heartbeat (I fall in love whenever we meet)

Summary:

"Is there anything else you want?" Sento asked.
“No. I mean, yes. Sort of. Maybe.”
“Thank you for giving me every possible answer to my question. So is it a yes or no?”
“Yes, I want something.”
“And at some point, do you intend to share what that something is, or should I start guessing?”
Banjou took a deep breath, then said,
“Can I kiss you?”

Work Text:

Shortly after the fireworks were over, Sento discreetly slipped away from the barbecue on the roof of Café Nascita and went to the basement to check again that all the equipment was ready for the next day's battle. He didn't think any of his friends would really notice; they were all a bit drunk, and by the time he left, Gentoku, Kazumin, and Banjou were singing an off-key song while the girls laughed.

He was at his desk checking the bottles he would bring the next day when he heard footsteps behind him.

He looked over and found Banjou behind him.

"Hey, Misora asked me to come see what you were doing, and to tell you to come back because the barbecue isn't over yet," Banjou said.

"You can tell her I'll be right back, I just want to check on a few things."

He thought Banjou would leave, but he continued to stand there, looking vaguely constipated.

Sento laughed.

“Don’t laugh at me!”

“I can’t help it, you caught me by surprise. I didn’t anticipate you being the type to ask for kisses from random people when you’re drunk.”

“I’m not asking random people, I’m asking you. And I’m not even really drunk, I had one beer and one of those yellow drinks Kazumin made. But if you don’t want to do it, that’s fine whatever. Forget it.”

Banjou was about to leave when Sento got up from the table and grabbed his arm.

"I didn't say I don't want to, just that you know, maybe it's not the right time to make rash decisions. And why me anyway?"

Banjou looked away.

"Just, I guess...because we might die tomorrow, and even if that doesn't happen, I have no idea what this new world you want to create will be like...but mostly just because I've wanted this for a long time. This isn't something I just thought about today, okay? Actually, when we were looking at the fireworks and you said you wanted to tell me something, I even thought maybe you were going to tell me...and I know I'm an musclehead idiot, and I know it's probably not a good idea, and you're such an asshole, but I really… really just want to kiss you."

Sento touched his face, caressing his cheek, lightly tracing the mole at the corner of his mouth with his fingertips. Is this really happening? Can I really have this? His skin felt hot, and when Banjou turned his eyes to him, there was so much hope and longing in them.

Sento smiled.

"You're going to be so embarrassed when you remember this in the morning."

He thought Banjou was going to tell him he was an asshole again, but instead the sentence that fell from his lips was:

"Maybe, but can I kiss you anyway?"

Sento nodded, and before he knew it, Banjou's mouth was on his, his hands on his back bringing him closer.

Sento parted his lips slightly and could feel Banjou's tongue. It tasted a bit of alcohol, but it also tasted like him.

Sento didn't have much to compare it to, his memories as Katsuragi Takumi were still too hazy to be sure if there had been other kisses in his past, and in his life as Sento, there had never been time for romance, but it still felt like an exceptionally good kiss. And even before it was over, it made him truly hope they'd survive tomorrow to maybe have a chance to have another.
