Burning Pain

Summary:

"I'm sorry. How bad would you say your pain is?"

"A nine," Fire Spirit said, "But it's fine. I can handle it." He always did have a high pain tolerance. Even the day he broke his ankle, he was laughing and joking so quickly they nearly didn't visit the hospital. The doctor was stunned when she saw the damage compared to Fire Spirit's behavior.

!! Pills are mentioned in this fic! None are taken, but dosages and taking pills are discussed! Please be wary if you are uncomfortable with this !!

Work Text:

Fire Spirit wasn't looking too good. Not only was he sweating more than usual, but his eyes were screwed shut and his nails dug into the sheets. Wind Archer sat down by his side and handed him a glass of water. "When's my next dosage...?" Fire Spirit asked in a choked voice.

Wind Archer checked his watch. "In around 40 minutes. Why?"

Fire Spirit groaned and let his head fall back. After a bit of coaxing, he took a sip of his water. His breathing was heavy. "My nerve block thing wore off..." he hissed out.

Wind Archer gave him a worried look. He wiped some sweat off of Fire Spirit's forehead as he spoke, "I'm sorry. How bad would you say your pain is?"

"A nine," Fire Spirit said, "But it's fine. I can handle it." He always did have a high pain tolerance. Even the day he broke his ankle, he was laughing and joking so quickly they nearly didn't visit the hospital. The doctor was stunned when she saw the damage compared to Fire Spirit's joyful behavior.

Wind Archer checked his alarms. "Well... with your next dose of Oxycodone, you can take your Ibuprofen too. Hopefully that helps," he said. He stroked his boyfriend's hair carefully.

Fire Spirit tilted his head to the side, but nodded and forced a smile. He dug his nails into his palm. "Alright," he said, "You said 40 more minutes? I can wait until then."

Wind Archer took his hand, holding it so that Fire Spirit could no longer claw at himself. "...how about a distraction, in the meantime?"

"Yeah? Like what?" Fire Spirit asked. His voice was still slightly slurred with exhaustion, but it seemed the pain was overriding the urge to sleep.

Wind Archer reached over to grab the remote, turning on the TV. He scrolled through the channel guide. "Tell me if you see something you wanna watch," he said.

As he flipped through channels, Fire Spirit didn't say anything. He looked over after a minute or two... ah. Fire Spirit had fallen asleep. He didn't seem very peaceful, but at least he was sleeping... Wind Archer kissed his head. "I'll be back with your medicine soon. Rest well," he said.

Wind Archer turned off the TV and the light, then left the bedroom. He had to figure out dinner... With Fire Spirit being bedbound for the next few weeks, eating healthy would be important... but he supposed a nice treat wouldn't hurt every so often. He closed the cookbook and ordered a pizza instead. Half veggie for himself, half buffalo chicken for Fire Spirit.

Notes:

Extra fun fact: The bit about almost not going to the hospital because of a good pain tolerance also happened to me 😭 Except I went to an urgent care first and my ankle was broken so bad that they couldn't help me there and I ended up in the hospital until like 2am
