Work Text:

Brrring.

The bell rings, but Damon Maitsu does not move from his seat. Unaware of the world around him, he continues scratching down notes on lined paper. With exams coming up soon, he needs to ensure that he's as prepared as possible. Sloppy notes would not be the reason he performs anything less than expected.

Short heels click on tiled floor, growing louder as the footsteps approach his desk. Damon knows who's come to visit him before she opens her mouth, but doesn't bother looking up to greet her.

"Hi, Damon!" Diana Venicia's cheery voice rings loud across the classroom. The blond has to resist the urge to flinch at the volume.

He mutters back a polite, "Hi," then closes his notebook. He'll finish his writing later in the quiet of his dorm.

"Ugh. Tozu's class is the worst, right?" the cosmetologist makes inane small talk, as she tends to do. "I feel like I can barely keep my head above water."

Since Diana is one of the few classmates that makes an effort with him, Damon feels obligated to indulge her. "I guess he is our harshest marker."

Harshest, though not overly difficult if the proper amount of effort is put in. At least not for him. High school in America and his year at Eden's Garden have taught him that not everyone approaches school work with the same rigour he does.

Unaware of his rude inner dialogue, Diana brightly continues, "Right? I can't wait until exams are finished and we can finally take a break."

"Yeah? So you have summer plans?"

By all logic, she must. While their class is too small for rigid popularity hierarchies, Diana would hypothetically be at the top. Damon would be at the bottom, though that's not something worth dwelling on.

At his words, Diana's expression widens into a cheshire smile. Damon immediately realizes that he's stepped on a conversational landmine.

"Oh my god! That's actually such a coincidence. I was about to ask you about summer plans?" Her voice lifts at the end, full of expectation.

Dread fills his stomach. "You were?"

"Yeah! So.. what about you?"

He knows exactly what she's doing, but he decides to prolong the invetiable. "What about me?" He asks, as though he doesn't know what she's referring to.

Unwilling to drop the subject, Diana clarifies, "Have any summer plans?"

Were it anyone else asking him this, Damon would assume it was to be cruel. It's no secret that he doesn't have many friends at Eden's Garden, and it wouldn't take an Ultimate Detective to figure out that he likely didn't have many friends in high school either. That it was a way to force him to admit that no, just like every other summer of his life, he won't be doing anything special, just sitting alone in his bedroom doing debate prep.

Except it's Diana, and she doesn't have a cruel bone in her body. If she's asking, it's because she's genuinely curious, not to make Damon feel badly.

"Not really?" he admits. To soften the blow, he elaborates, "Just visiting my parents."

Now that he's a university student, it's not pathetic for him to spend the summer with his parents. It's sweet, and almost expected. A perfect way for him to save face.

Strangely, this lackluster answer excites Diana. "That's perfect!" she squeals.

Apprehension rushes through him. There's something he's missing. "… It is?"

As she somehow grins even wider, Damon realizes this entire conversation has been a set-up. From the beginning, despite her angelic facade, Diana has been slowly, sweetly, guiding this conversation exactly where she wants it.

"See," she draws out the 'ee', savouring it. "Wolfgang had this incredible idea that we should all take a week-long road trip together!"

And it clicks.

"He did," Damon deadpans, unimpressed.

The name Wolfgang is enough to make him completely disengage. If that smarmy asshole is involved, then Damon won't be. It makes sense that he'd send Diana in to do his dirty work instead of going to Damon directly.

Diana, unaware of his gloom, explains, "Yeah! Like maybe the second last week before next term starts."

"Huh," Damon grunts, feigning naivety.

"So that would work for you? Timing wise?" Diana questions directly, so there's no way he can avoid what she's asking him.

"Uh," he starts, then trails off, trying to find a reasonable excuse for being unable to go.

"We want to make sure everyone can attend!" Diana fills in, making it clear that she won't just take no and walk away.

With a sigh, Damon decides to just be upfront about what he's thinking. Dancing around the issue isn't working, and it's not a secret that he doesn't enjoy class gatherings. "Why would I want to do that?"

Maybe he's too blunt, because Diana's eyes get glassy. It's unclear as to whether or not the tears are genuine, so he feels like an asshole when she sniffles, "Why would you want to spend time with us?"

Quickly, he corrects her. "I didn't mean it like that."

As quickly as the tears came, they disappear. Damon feels like a moron for falling for her act when she practically sings, "I know you didn't! So does that work? The week of August 18th."

With nothing else to do, he sighs, "… I guess that works."

Internally, he curses Diana's name. It's not fair that someone who's usually so sweet could have such a manipulative streak.

Happy as a clam, she says, "Great! Perfect."

Then, before he can say goodbye and walk away, she stops and acts as though she's remembered something. "Oh, and one more thing: you drive, don't you?"

"Yes," he mumbles, unable to blatantly lie.

Predicatably, she follows up his affirmation with, "Amazing! So you can be one of the drivers."

Yeah, no. It's bad enough they're doing everything they can to force him on this stupid trip; the last thing he's going to do is drive for them.

Thankfully, he has the perfect excuse. "Wait a second. I don't even have a car."

Diana waves him off. "Don't worry about that! Wolfgang is renting three vans. You'll just drive one of them!"

Now thoroughly annoyed at being strong-armed into these plans, he just agrees. "Fine, whatever."

While he speaks, he leans back in his chair to stretch. As he does so, he catches a glimpse of pastel pink hair out of the corner of his eye. Kai Monteago leaves the classroom, nose stuck in his phone as it often tends to be.

What a stupid thing to notice. He forces his attention back to Diana, who is smiling right in front of him.

"This is gonna be so much fun!" she cheers, so earnest that he's almost able to believe her.

Almost.

Five exams, three weeks, and one train ride later, Damon is sitting at home eating dinner. His real home, that is, not the dorm room he resides in for most of the year. To celebrate his return, his mother (an angel) made him maple roasted squash for dinner. It's his favourite dish, and while he's done his best to replicate the recipe in the crappy kitchen in his dorm, nothing beats his mother's homemade cooking.

Both of his parents observe him with big smiles, their pride and love for him absolutely oozing out of their pours. There's something almost painful about it— affection so unfamiliar after a lonely year at school.

His classmates (for the most part) aren't cruel or even rude to him. They just don't care for him, really. They haven't since he put his foot in his mouth on day one, and completely butchered their first impression of him. While things have gotten better, there's always been a sort of disconnect between him and everyone else. Which is fine, it's really not something he minds.

Still, although disorienting, it's nice to be amongst the two people in the world who actually like him.

"We're so happy to have you back with us for the summer," his mother coos just after he's taken a biteful of food. Strategic timing, so he can't tell her off for gushing over him.

His father changes the subject quickly, "How are your classes? Are you excelling in them?"

After swallowing his food, he answers, "I'm second in the general education courses."

Though it hurts him to say, his mother doesn't seem to have any issue with his ranking. In fact, her beaming smile says the opposite.

"Second? That's very impressive, sweetie."

"Who's first?" his father asks dryly, though the corner of his lip has turned up ever so slightly.

His mother doesn't find his question amusing. "Marius!"

"I'm only joking!" he defends, sending Damon a wink.

"Wolfgang. He's the Ultimate Lawyer," Damon answers, mostly so it never has to come up again.

The name leaves a sour taste in his mouth. To remedy this, he takes a swig of water.

"That's quite an impressive title," his mother gasps. "Are you boys friends?"

"Yup," Damon lies.

If tells the truth, says that Wolfgang probably hates him more than anyone else in class, that would open up a whole can of worms. They'd start asking why they don't get along, and who his friends were, then.

To tell the truth— that his only 'friend' was made because they were the two no one else wanted to talk to, and that even she has begun her career to branch out and socialize with everyone else— would break his mother's heart. So instead he lies.

Oblivious to the turmoil of emotions going on inside Damon, his father says, "That makes sense. It sounds like you'd have a lot in common."

"Sure do," he replies, then shoves a forkful of food in his mouth.

Even at home, surrounded by the people who love him, he can't escape the loneliness he feels inside.

Then, while chewing on squash, he gets an idea. A solution to a problem that's been nagging at the back of his brain for the last few weeks.

Out of the entire year, his time with his parents is now limited to just about 3 months at most. 12(ish) precious weeks that couldn't be taken for granted.

There's no way his parents, who love him so much, would consent to him taking off for a whole seven days. They'd tell him he's not allowed to go on the stupid class trip, and he'd have the perfect excuse to tell Diana.

"Um, actually, speaking of friends, I had something to run by you," he says once his mouth is no longer full.

"What is it?" his mother asks, a hopeful smile on her face.

He doesn't beat around the bush. He jumps right into saying, "My classmates are organizing this class trip they want to take in August. If I went, I'd be gone a full week. If you'd rather I stay here, since I'm gone so much, I really wouldn't be upset. At all. But they've invited me to join them."

Except, to his horror, his mother's smile only grows. She doesn't look heartbroken that he'd even suggest such a thing; she looks elated.

"Oh my goodness, Damon! That's incredible!" She claps— literally claps— her hands together in excitement. "Your first class trip!"

"That sounds like a lot of fun," he father adds, twisting the knife in deeper.

"I don't have to go," Damon urges them quickly, realizing the mistake he's made.

His mom shakes her head adamantly. "Of course you do! What an experience you'd be missing out on!"

Everything is slipping away. His chance for freedom is suddenly even lower than it was before.

As a desperate Hail Mary, he tries to say, "Really. If you want to think about it, you can."

Only his dad just laughs at him. He does it in a kind way, but it feels mean considering the context. "You're an adult now, Damon. You don't need our permission to go on vacation with your friends."

"Yeah. I guess I don't," he grumbles, resigned to the fact that this is now his fate. He should've skipped the step of asking his parents and just told Diana they said no. Now that they've given permission, and they're excited about it, there's no universe they'll be okay with him missing it.

Glumly, he takes another bite of his food. At least he won't be leaving for another two months.

Two months fly by much too fast for Damon's liking, and before he knows it he's on that familiar train ride to Eden's Garden. It's slightly different than what he's used to, since it's a public train rather than one rented by the school, but not by much. Damon still sits alone by a window, listening to music, and reading a book for the couple hours the ride takes.

The sun nearly blinds him as he takes his first steps off the train. Given that their meeting place is the station, he doesn't have to work very hard to find the rest of his classmates.

A quick glance across all the gathered teenagers (and youn adults) reveals that Damon's 40 minute train delay has made him the last to arrive. He'd feel more guilty is he didn't feel like he was forced into this whole ordeal.

The first person to notice him is Toshiko, who rushes right up to him. "Mochi!" she cries, much more excited than should make sense. "You're here!"

Toshiko and Damon have an interesting relationship. They aren't friends (he'd never willingly befriend a 14 year old) but the little matchmaker isn't as hostile to him as some of his other classmates. The fact that they both grew up in Japan gives them a strange bond that no one can understand. Not even Eva or Wolfgang, who both happen to be half-Japanese but grew up entirely in America.

The young girl's greeting attracts Diana's attention. "Oh, hi Damon!" she calls.

"Hello," he mumbles, dragging his feet as he makes his way over.

"Dude," Jett whistles. "How are you in a jacket? I think I'm dying of heatstroke."

Like always, Jett is wearing his racing helmet. Though, for the first time that Damon's ever seen he's wearing a black undershirt instead of his full leather suit. He still has gloves on, and the shirt is a long sleeve, but it looks lighter than what he normally wears.

Grace pipes in before Damon has a chance to. "Maybe if ya took off that stupid helmet."

"No can do. Not if I'm gonna be racing down the high way of life."

This response, along with Grace involving herself, is enough to cause Damon to tune out the conversation. If there's one person in the entire class he would avoid talking to for the rest of his life, it'd be Grace Madison.

The girl is, for a lack of a better term, a bitch. Damon detests using that word, especially toward women, but sometimes the shoe fits. Ever since his initial rocky start at school, Grace has taken every single opportunity to torture him. It's not incessant— she mostly ignores him— but whenever given the chance to make a snide remark she takes it.

It's all petty, and frustrating to have to listen to. While he couldn't care less what she says about him, it's enough to deter him from going to any class events. Listening to her ridiculous squawking always gives him a headache. This not the only reason he doesn't attend, of course, but it's not an insignificant factor.

Damon notices his suitcase isn't quite rolling probably and bends down to fix it. While he's fiddling with the wheels, Wolfgang walks right up to him. Damon knows it's Wolfgang because he's the only person in the class to wear black leather shoes on a daily basis.

"Nice to see you make it, Mr. Maitsu," Wolfgang purrs. His tone is fairly polite, though Damon can sense the unspoken meaning in what he's saying.

Damon has never shown up before, Damon was late today, Damon is not someone Wolfgang considers reliable.

He can't help but quip back, "I wasn't aware I had a choice."

It's a bad idea to antagonize Wolfgang. Damon doesn't care, though. In fact, he relishes in it.

"I've missed that dry humour," the lawyer fibs, his lips pursed tight. Damon knows there's nothing about him that's been missed.

"Sure."

Wolfgang is a man of business and action, so even with the tension between them, he jumps straight to what needs to be sorted.

"Here are the keys," he explains as he passes a car fob with a single key to Damon. "You'll be driving Eva, Diana, Kai, and most of the supplies since you have two less passengers than anyone else."

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

"How was that decided?" he asks casually, with a desperate hope that Wolfgang can't read what's actually going on in inside of him.

The lawyer gives him a curious, appraising look. "It was random. Do you take issue—?"

"Of course not," Damon says without waiting for Wolfgang to even finish his sentence.

On the surface, this should be the best case scenario for Damon. In his car he has Eva, the closest thing he has to a friend, and Diana, who's ridiculously easy to talk to.

Except Kai is also there. And while Kai shouldn't be different from any of Damon's other classmates, he is.

On the first day they met, Damon brushed Kai off. He found him loud, obnoxious, annoying, and the perfect embodiment of everything Damon hated about the Ultimate Talent Program.

But then, inexplicably, Damon started noticing him. Or maybe Kai started noticing Damon? It wasn't totally clear. One day they were complete strangers, and the next Kai would give him one of those head nod greetings every time they made eye contact. Or he'd say hi when they passed each other in the hall. Tiny, meaningless gestures, but a clear shift in how Kai interacted with him.

So Damon started paying attention to him. Why wouldn't he? When roughly his entire class ignored him (or was actively hostile towards him) it was notable when someone treated him normally. Not like a friend, of course. Just like a human.

Not that his other classmates didn't treat him as a human, they just didn't treat him like anything.

So Kai is different, and in a way that makes Damon's head hurt and his focus shift and that really doesn't seem conducive to driving on the highway.

Completely unaware of his inner turmoil (hopefully), Wolfgang gives him a curt nod. "Splendid. You're a little late, so the cars are already packed. We should be heading out momentarily."

Damon is too in his head to care much about the slight jab, so he just says, "Thanks."

With another nod, Wolfgang marches back to his girlfriend. Grace throws her arms around him as soon as he arrives, behaving as though they've been seperated for months. Wenona and Eloise shoot each other looks behind their back.

That small action makes Damon smile just a tiny bit. It's refreshing to see he's not the only one who finds their PDA excessive and ridiculous.

Grace starts fervently kissing Wolfgang, and that's enough for Damon to look away from them. He notices everyone is gathered in what must be their driving groups. Wolfgang is by a black van with Grace, Wenona, Eloise, Desmond and Ulysses. Jett is next to his own bright red vehicle with Mark, Toshiko, Ingrid, Jean, and Cassidy.

Which leaves his group: Diana, Eva, and Kai, standing by a bright pink van.

The sight of the monstrosity makes him do a double take; of course Wolfgang would force Damon to drive a car that's the ugliest colour imaginable. It's so unsurprising that he can't even find it in himself to be upset.

Dragging his feet, he walks over to his group. When he's about two feet away Eva greets him.

"Hey, Maitsu."

The mathlete looks about the same as she always does, as though summer hasn't changed her at all. Not that it should've; Damon is exactly the same as when he left Eden's Garden in the spring.

"H-," he starts to reply, only to be cut off.

"How often do you drive?" Kai Monteago asks sharply, whipping around to face him.

While Eva and Damon are the same, Kai has changed. The sight of him knocks the wind out of Damon.

First of all, his hair has been redyed. He still has those signature roots showing, but they're less than an inch long rather than the two inches they'd been during exams. It's also trimmed a little shorter, neater, so Damon can see more of Kai's face.

Kai's face, which is much more tan than Damon's ever seen it. The bronze colour brings out the gold in his eyes and even the pink of his hair. It looks like he's spent the last two months sunbathing, the picture perfect image of summer.

"Huh?" Damon stutters, partly thrown off by Kai's new look and partly confused by the question.

The influencer's bangles jingle as he crosses his arms. He's wearing a t-shirt, so Damon can see his arms flex as he does it. He forces himself to stop paying attention to meaningless things and listen to the words coming out of his mouth. "I didn't even know you have a license. How often do you drive?"

Thankfully, the rude words are enough to shake him out of his stupor. There's something incredible about Kai Monteago; Damon will spend a whole week noticing him from afar (and berating himself for it) then the first time the man opens his mouth, he's reminded of why they got off the wrong foot.

"It depends?" Damon answers, though he does his best to use a tone that will show he's annoyed by the question. "When I'm home, I take the car out to do errands and stuff. At school, almost never."

Everything at school is walkable, so he doesn't even mind not having a car there. The only time he'd possibly need it would be if he was driving into town to do something- but he's never down that anyway.

Apparently his answer isn't enough to assuage Kai's nerves. "Have you ever received a ticket?"

"No." He punctuates the word with a glare.

Despite his clear annoyance, Kai doesn't take the hint. He keeps pressing. "How many times did you have to take your test?"

It's such an insulting question that Damon clenches his fist tight. He's not a violent person, never been in a fight, but something about Kai makes him want to scream and punch the air.

That's not normal behaviour, though. So he manages to hold back.

His face feels all hot and sweaty. Diana, bless her heart, must notice the tension because she jumps in to defend him.

"Kai! I'm sure Damon's a great driver!" she reasons, giving her best friend an exhasperated look.

Damon assumes they're best friends. They spend enough time together.

"I just want to make sure!" Kai defends himself, throwing his hands up. "No way am I getting killed by his poor driving skills."

"Excuse me? If you're so scared, why don't you drive?" Damon says, loudly. He doesn't mean to raise his voice but he can't help himself.

The question makes Kai pause for just a moment. Then, almost sheepish, he mumbles, "I don't know how."

"Typical," Damon spits.

It doesn't surprise him. Of course Kai can't drive— is there another man alive that screams 'passenger princess' louder? But his audacity is still enough to give Damon pause.

Before the fight can continue, Eva speaks up. "Whatever. I'm getting in the car."

"Me too!" Diana agrees quickly. Then, as if to make the situation better, she chirps, "I know you won't kill us, Damon!"

Eva opens a bright pink door for Diana, and they both climb into the van. He realizes that they've only left the shotgun seat open, meaning that Kai will be right next to him for the entire ride.

Maybe this argument could benefit him; Damon will be too annoyed with him to get distracted while he's driving. Honestly, it's probably safer this way.

There's the sound of another car door slamming shut, then another, and another. Clearly, people are ready to leave.

After a second of silence, Damon offers with a sigh, "Would you rather drive with Jett?"

"No. Obviously I would not rather drive with Jett." Kai says with a big pout that Damon does not find cute.

It's a little reassuring that Kai trusts him more as a driver than he does Jett.

"Okay. Then get in the car." Damon gestures to their pink chariot.

"Fine!" Kai huffs, then stomps to the passenger side.

Damon Maitsu is not a religious man, but still he looks up at the sky and says a prayer. For what? He's not entirely sure. Maybe a safe, headache-free trip.

About five minutes after they get on the highway, Kai reaches forward and starts fiddling with the console. A few more moments after that, noise starts blaring from the speakers.

Damon's eyes flick over to meet Kai's. "What the hell is this music?"

Perfectly plucked eyebrows furrow together in annoyance, then golden irises roll back. He quickly looks back at the road (for safety purposes).

"Literally just mainstream pop," Kai defends himself. And while Damon can't see his expression (due to being an attentive driver) he can practically hear the pout in his voice.

"Jesus," he sighs because he's disappointed in what the masses are listening to. Not because he's imagining Kai's lips.

From the backseat, Diana giggles, "I love this song!"

"It's pretty nice," Eva agrees. Her nose is in a tablet (probably reading), and she doesn't give any other indication that she's paying attention to their conversation.

"See!" Kai gestures wildly toward the girls in the back. "I have great taste."

"I never said you didn't. You're just getting defensive."

Damon expects some pushback on this, considering he absolutely implied that the music was bad, but Kai is surprisingly reserved in his response.

"Whatever."

After that, the car goes mostly quiet again. Kai and Diana busy themselves on their phones, and Eva continues to read her book. It only takes a couple minutes for Damon to feel left out and understimulated.

"So where are we going?" he asks to make conversation and draw their attention back to him.

"Good question," Eva acknowledges.

"Guys!" Diana gasps, as though they've really hurt her. It sounds painful enough that Damon almost swerves the car. "Didn't you read the itinerary I sent?"

For a few seconds, no one responds to that. Damon has nothing to say; he wasn't even aware that there was an itinerary to look at. Most of the time when Diana (or any of his classmates) send him attachments he ignores it. There's a good chance he opened the message and then completely forgot about it.

Diana's face deflates even more, but Kai starts speaking quickly. "I, for one, trusted that my incredible, beautiful, gorgeous best friend would plan an amazing vacation. I didn't want to check and ruin the surprise."

"Aww!" Diana coos, as though he didn't clearly make up an excuse on the spot.

Damon tries to stay quiet, but that only lasts a few seconds before he can't help but say, "Nice bullshitting."

"I'm not!"

Kai shoots him an absolute death glare; he's smart enough not to push harder.

"I skimmed it," Eva offers half heartedly.

These platitudes are apparently enough to knock Diana out of her melancholy. As if someone flipped a switch, she sits up straight and puts a bright smile on her face as she explains, "Okay, well for our first night we're going to be stopping at a campsite and pitching tents."

And that revalation is nearly enough to make Damon slam on the breaks.

"What?" he asks, in hopes that his ears are failing him.

"Yeah!" Diana quickly reaffirms herself, crushing him hopes in an instant. "So that way we get a taste of summer camping on our way to the beach."

It might be shocking, but Damon does not enjoy roughing it in the wilderness. A scenic hike with a minimal incline? Sure, he's all over that. Sleeping on the forest floor in a tent and a shitty sleeping bag for a night, pissing in the woods, and getting eaten alive by bugs? Not his idea of a good time.

Evidently, Kai agrees with him. He yelps, "Oh!" in a tone that indicates he's just as horrified as Damon is internally.

Diana is dealing with a tough crowd, because Eva follows that up with a very dry, monotone, "Camping. Yay."

He takes his bottom lip into his mouth and bites down hard enough to feel the pain. He focuses on that to try and keep his mouth stuck, to try and prevent himself from committing the social faux pas.

"Why would I ever want to go camping?"

It's all in vain because he just can't help himself.

He thinks there might be something about his brutal honesty that Diana enjoys. She only smiles at him and suggests, "Because it's fun?"

And to him, that just sounds like an invitation to debate.

"Sleeping on the ground in a tent while being swarmed by insects does not sound like a fun experience to me," he explains, believing himself quite rational. It helps that Kai and Eva are there, and they've already (politely) expressed their distaste for the plan. He knows he's mostly in company that will agree with him.

But then, mercilessly, Diana pulls out the trump card. Something that's only resorted to when one doesn't have a real argument to make, but they want the glory of winning anyway.

Diana ignores everything he said to call him names. "You can do it! It's not like you're a big baby," she instructs, her pitch rising on the last word.

To make it worse, Kai loudly laughs, "Ha!"

"There's nothing childish about a disdain for such a frivolous hobby!" he argues seriously, getting a sense of deja vu. It sounds like an argument he might've had at any point during his childhood. "And don't act like you don't hate the idea of this too." With this he turns his head to look at Kai again, wanting to push the attention off of him.

"Oh, no," Kai quickly clarifies. "Camping sounds like a nightmare."

"Guys!" Diana whines.

Her pouting is enough to make Eva say, "I think it'll be fun."

Damon watches Diana's eyes light up through the mirror. "Really?"

"It's something new," the mathlete offers.

Under his breath, just loud enough for Kai to hear, Damon mumbles, "Kiss ass."

Because seriously, since when has Eva been someone to coddle anyone's feelings? She and Diana had started to become friends at the end of the school year, but he didn't realize that it went that deep.

"For real," Kai agrees, making him feel slightly less crazy.

"Oh! I love this song," Diana squeals when the music changes, prompting Kai to turn it up.

Apparently the music being loud is enough to cause Kai to start singing along. His voice is quiet, just under the music, but Damon likes the sound. He's not a particularly good singer, but he vaguely manages to stay on tune.

If this is what the road trip is going to be like, maybe it wouldn't be all bad. Maybe it'll make even the night spent camping worth it.

Probably not, though.
