Summary
Tim can see so clearly how this is going to go. Batman will never kill the Joker. Jason will take that as proof that Bruce doesn't care about him, has never cared about him. Bruce will try and try to prove him wrong, twisting himself up tighter and tighter and doing worse and worse every time. Jason will see confirmation of Bruce's disinterest in every twitch, and Bruce will see the evidence of his own failure in every rebuff.
Sometimes Tim is so, so tired.

"I don't understand what's happened," Bruce says finally, carefully. Tim can recognize the signs of Dick's coaching. "Can you explain it?"
Tim holds his breath, breathes, holds his breath again until his throat feels a little less clogged. "My objectives were to prevent a rift in the family," he says. It comes out cracked but mostly steady. "Jason - you - " He stops. Breathes. "You weren't going to kill the Joker. The family isn't whole without Jason. It was necessary for a - a neutral third party to remove the obstacle and allow everything to right itself."
Bruce's hands are so tight on his knees that his fingertips are white. "Tim -" he cuts himself off, hard. His shoulders are so tense that Tim thinks it's probably painful. He watches as Bruce forces his muscles to unclench, one by one.
"Tim," he says again, and runs dry a second time. He shakes his head, and Tim wonders with morbid fascination what paths he's refusing to take.
"You don't have to say anything," he offers. "I know... I know what you must think about what I did."
Bruce's mouth twists in a bitter smile. "That's our problem, isn't it?" he says. "I keep thinking of what your response would be to anything I can say, and then it seems pointless to say it."
Tim has to blink hard to keep his vision clear. "You could say it anyway. I might surprise you."
Bruce rubs his forehead. Tim hears you've already surprised me enough in the gesture, as clear as anything, and flinches back.
"Tim," Bruce says, exhausted. "Why are you still down here? The cell isn't locked. We haven't even been closing the door."
