we shouldn’t, but we do

Summary:

“I’m just not sure if that's something... Friends... Should do...” Will whispered, so soft Mike had to think about what he had just said. The word made something in Will’s chest collapse, quiet and sudden, like he’d expected it and still wasn’t ready for it.

“Right... Friends...” Mike mumbled, letting out a sigh as he ran a hand through Will’s hair, propping himself up on his elbow. Will froze.

“No- shit, Will.. I didn’t mean it like that…” Mike stuttered, closing his eyes and letting out a sigh. Will turned to look at him, his expression unreadable as he spoke.

“Then how did you mean it, Mike?” Will spoke sternly, but his voice still shook, and it made him cringe.

Work Text:

The phone cut through the air, interrupting the comforting silence filling the Byers’ house as Will slept on the couch. “Of fucking course.” He groaned, sitting up and stumbling over to the phone, rubbing his temple with his soft calloused fingers.

“This is the Byers residence... What do you want?” he mumbled into the phone, his tone full of annoyance and drowsiness, waiting to hear the identity of the person calling on the other line.

“Oh sorry... Is this a bad time?” The other voice asked, it took Will a moment to put a voice to face, but when he finally did he could feel his annoyance fading away.

“Oh, hey Mike... No it's okay, just taking a nap... What's up?” He asked, his tone completely different, the annoyance completely gone, a small hint of drowsiness still lingering.

“I was wondering if you wanted to come over and watch Back to the future with me? I know it came out a little while ago, I just wanted to hang out with you... But if you don’t want to, it's totally fine.” Mike responded, the uncertainty in his voice obvious.

“No no, I would definitely enjoy that... Let me get changed and I'll be on my way.” He replied, the happiness in his voice making him cringe as he sighs. “Sounds good, I'll see you soon Will.” He responded before hanging up.

----------------

Will bikes into Mike’s driveway, practically running up to the door as he knocks softly, the night sky behind him sending a small chill through his body as small memories come rushing back, haunting him.

He twisted the doorhandle, testing if it was unlocked as he pushed the door open, the familiar childhood scent pushing away all the terrible memories he had just been thinking about, replacing them with the vivid, soft calming memories of Mike.

Mike.

It's always been Mike.

He quietly walked over to the basement door, shutting it softly behind him before walking down the steps, his expression shifting when he catches Mike setting up snacks and drinks, fixing pillows, and grabbing blankets.

The stairs creak softly, causing Mike to spin around. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you...” Will mumbled, walking over to the table full of snacks, his hand resting dangerously close to Mike's.

It took a moment for Mike's heartbeat to finally lower again, a small relieved sigh leaving him. “My mom would’ve killed me if she saw all the snacks and drinks...” He laughed, glancing down at their hands, his eyes lingering there for a moment as his pinky twitched, causing it to lightly brush Wills in a way that sent a wave of electricity through both of their bodies.

Will’s breath hitched as Mike placed his pinky over wills. The silence drags on for a moment, and then it's all over. Mike pulls away and walks over to the couch, falling backward with a thud as he adjusts the pillows and blankets.

Will hesitates for a moment, then walks over and takes a seat beside him, looking around for a blanket. “Do you have another blanket?” He asks, a small wave of guilt washing over him for asking.

“I was thinking we could share this one?” He replied, his voice soft, comforting. The hint of something else ever so slightly lingering in his words, but Will just couldn’t put his finger on it.

Oh.

Sharing a blanket with Mike Wheeler, his childhood crush. What could go wrong?

He realized that he still hadn’t responded and quickly cleared his throat, nodding. “Sorry, uh yeah that’s... fine...” he murmured, scooting closer to slide under the blanket Mike was inviting him under.

As he shifted under their thighs brushed for a moment, sending yet another familiar feeling of tension. Will glanced over at Mike through the corner of his eyes as he put on the movie, taking in his side profile.

Mike glanced back, catching his gaze.

Will froze, unable to bring himself to drag his eyes away as Mike stared back, and Will swore he could almost see a look of admiration in his eyes.

They stayed there for a moment, eyes locked on each other before Mike finally broke eye contact, clearing his throat.

After the movie started, Mike leaned back again, somehow managing to scoot closer to Will as their thighs and shoulders were now touching.

Will's breath hitched audibly, earning a small glance from Mike who’s breath also seemed off.

Will turned his attention back to the movie, but his thoughts just kept trailing back to the feeling of the two of them pressed up against each other, but his thoughts were interrupted as he felt soft curls brushing his neck and a small weight on his shoulder.

Will looked down at his shoulder, greeted to the sight of Mike's head resting on Will's shoulder, one of his hands slithering under the blanket as Will shivered slightly, wondering what he could be doing.

Suddenly, he felt a light touch on his waist, making his breath hitch. His hand lingered for a moment, giving a light squeeze before retreating above the blanket again, and Mike didn’t even spare him a glance.

He let out a soft sigh, closing his eyes for a moment.

He opened his eyes again after a moment, hesitating before resting his head on top of Mikes, the smell of his shampoo making him sigh comfortably.

Then he felt it again, the hand on his waist. This time showing no signs of letting go as Mike adjusted himself, sliding a leg over Will's lap as he moved his head down to his chest, his expression completely casual.

This time, Mike looked up at Will, his expression unreadable but his slightly pink cheeks said everything Will needed to know.

“Is this okay?” He asked softly, giving his waist a soft squeeze.

Will nodded, “you and your stupid little puppy dog eyes...” he whispered, mostly to himself. Will reached up and lightly ran his thumb across his cheek before letting go, bringing his hand down to his lower back.

Mike's expression softened slightly, leaning into his touch for the split second he held his face. “Hm?” He responded, intentionally doing it now as he looked up at him.

Will's heart fluttered as Mike looked up at him, his hand sliding up his back to cup his cheek again. “I feel like I’ll never understand you...” he whispered, a sigh following his words as his thumb twitched slightly against his cheek.

“Understand what?” He murmured, his intentional expression leaving, replaced with a furrowed brow and small frown.

“Your feelings.” He whispered, and Mike tensed up. Will froze up too, his thumb coming to a standstill on Mike's cheek.

Mike looked away, his eyes looking everywhere but Will as he spoke. “I don’t understand yours either.” He mumbled, a small pink tint to his cheeks again.

“I feel like I've made them pretty clear, Mike.” Will responded, his tone shifting slightly. It hurt more than Will wanted to admit, how easily Mike seemed to misunderstand him.

“Can you explain them to me?” He asks, adjusting to get a clearer view of Will, his chin resting on his chest as he looks up at him, his hands sliding up, one hand sliding into Will’s hair and the other resting on his neck.

Will hesitated, before shaking his head, letting out an upset sigh. “Not... Not right now.” He whispered, looking away into the distance.

Mike sighed as well, laying his head back down, his hand twirling Will’s hair anxiously. “Mhm.” He dully hummed, burrowing his head into Will’s neck.

Will froze as he felt Mike’s breath against his neck, his hand moving from his cheek and to the back of his head, reciprocating his movements and twirling Mike’s soft curls. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled into Mike’s hair, wanting to so desperately press a light kiss against his scalp, to confess every last detail, down to every little thing he loves about him.

“It’s okay, I feel like I know the answer.” He mumbled against Will’s skin, making Will let out a shaky sigh. Will nodded, pulling Mike towards him tighter, the movie playing softly in the background and for a moment, he swore he could feel Mike’s lips pressing a hesitant kiss against Will’s neck.

Will blinked a couple times, trying to process if he truly just did kiss his neck, his thoughts answered by another soft kiss, this time he could tell it was intentional. Will’s eyes fluttered shut, his grip on Mike’s hair tightening slightly, earning a soft groan from Mike, the vibrations against his neck making him bite his lip.

“Wait- Mike.” He mumbled, pulling his head back by his hair, making Mike whimper slightly.

“What?” He whispered, his eyes full of something Will didn’t quite know. Could it be love, hunger? A little bit of lust? He could never tell anymore what Mike was truly thinking.

“I can’t-... We can’t... Not... Now...” He whispered, guilt and regret pooling in his stomach as Mike nodded understandingly.

And then it was over, this long moment between them had come to an end as Mike crawled off of Will, leaving his body cold and craving touch.

Will frowned as Mike leaned over and grabbed a snack, diverting his attention back to the movie. It’s official, Will’s losing his mind over Mike Wheeler, and Mike doesn’t even know.

Around 30 minutes later, Will felt another light weight on his shoulder, he hesitated to look for a moment before finally giving in, glancing down at Mike, his heart picking up the pace as he noticed that his eyes were closed.

Mike had fallen asleep on him.

Will sighed, throwing his head back on the pillow, a frustrated sigh leaving him.

Why did Mike have to be like this? It drove Will crazy, and day by day he was losing his patience as more speeches came to his head on what he should say to Mike, a way to finally show Mike his feelings, to finally confess what he had always truly wanted to say to him.

While trapped in his thoughts, Will’s eyes had also fluttered shut, leading him into the darkness of sleep as well.

----------------

Mike was the first to wake up, he blinked for a moment before processing that he was lying on Will, he sat up quickly, seeing that Will had also fallen asleep, in an uncomfortable looking position.

His head was thrown back on the couch, his hands intertwined on his lap.

He hesitated for a moment before leaning over, pressing a soft whisper of a kiss to Will’s cheek before getting up and over to the bathroom.

Soon enough, Will’s also shifted awake, confusion washing over him as he sat up, his neck aching as he did so. “Shit...” He mumbled, bringing his hand up to rub his neck as he winced. He looked over to his side, seeing the missing figure of Mike.

“Mike...?” He asked into the darkness since the movie had turned off, who knows how long they were asleep for.

“Bathroom.” A voice responded, and Will let out a relieved sigh, he hadn’t left him down here just yet.

Will fidgeted with his finger nails, picking at them anxiously, since Mike had woken up first he had seen that he fell asleep on Will. Was he going to be upset?

Soon, Mike came out of the bathroom, coming back to sit down next to Will, a heavy sigh escaping him.

“Do you um... know what time it is?” Will asked softly, rubbing the back of his aching neck.

Mike nodded, checking his watch. “10:38.” He mumbled, glancing at Will’s hand rubbing his neck. “Did you mess up your neck with the way you slept?” He asked, a small frown making its way onto his face.

Will nodded, bringing his hand away from his neck awkwardly as a small tint of pink hit his cheeks.

“Want me to help you?”

“Help how?”

“I massage your neck?” He mumbled, the soft pink rising to his cheeks as well. His head swirling with a small amount of embarrassment.

“Oh... Sure...” Will murmured, scooting closer and turning to face his neck towards Mike.

Mike hesitated before lifting his hands to Will’s shoulders, lightly massaging them. Will let out a small groan, making Mike let out a shaky breath.

Mike moved his way up his shoulders, lightly massaging the tense spots earning a few soft sounds from Will.

Will’s eyes fluttered shut softly as Mike continued massaging, he let out a soft moan and Mike froze, and Will went bright red. “Shit... sorry.” He whispered, pressing his nails into the palm of his hands, making small crescent moons.

“You’ve gotta stop doing that... it’s driving me crazy.” He mumbled before continuing his massage, and Will froze, blinking a few times as he processed what Mike had just said. Will drives him crazy? What did he mean by that?

Will nodded, and he felt Mike's hands shift slightly higher, this wasn’t even a massage anymore, it was Mike trying to hear Will.

He felt Mike's breath on the back of his ear, making him shiver. “Mike...” he whispered breathlessly, turning to face him, Mike's hands never left his neck.

“Hm?” He hummed, his gaze not leaving Will’s neck as he softly massaged. Will let out a comfortable sigh, closing his eyes for a small moment before opening them again. “I have to go home soon...” he mumbled, a small frown forming on his face.

Mike sighed, pausing his hands for a moment to bring them up to cup his face. “Same time tomorrow?” He asked, those convincing puppy eyes corrupting Will’s thoughts. Will nodded, leaning into Mike’s touch. “Definitely... I’ll definitely be here...” He mumbled, a clear tone of drowsiness in his voice even after he had slept for an hour.

Mike hesitated for a moment before bringing Will’s head near, pressing a soft kiss to the tip of his nose, and Will froze, just eyes slightly widened

Mike smiled before getting up, clearing his throat. “I’ll clean the snacks up... You can go home and get some rest if you want, just be here tomorrow.” He spoke quietly, gently. In the same similar tone he did every time he noticed Will was upset or tired.

Will was still frozen before he blinked a couple times and nodded, standing up as well. “See you tomorrow…” He murmured, getting one last glance at Mike before walking up the stairs, closing his eyes for a moment as he shut the basement door, leaning against it.

“I wish you would just confess.” He whispered to himself, speaking the words he knew he could never truly speak out loud to Mike.

He stayed for a moment before finally walking over to the front door, letting out a sigh as he stepped out, the cold hitting his warm skin instantly.

He got on his bike quickly, pedaling with speed as he focused on not thinking about the upside down. When Will finally got home, he carefully opened the door and slipped inside, leaving his bike on the porch.

As soon as he shut the door he slid down it, grabbing the sides of his hair with a decent amount of force as he brought his knees up to his chest.

“Why is love this hard...” he mumbled to himself with a shaky breath as he let the negative thoughts take over, the terrible memories that he couldn’t seem to escape.

“It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” Mike yelled, and ever since then, it haunted Will. Even now, almost years later.

He felt a tear slip from the corner of his eye and he laid his head on his knees, letting a few more tears slip through his closed eyes.

He sat there for a moment before wiping his cheek off and standing up, walking slowly over to his bed and slipping under the covers, grabbing one of his pillows to hug it tightly.

He let his thoughts take over as his eyes fluttered shut, seeking an escape from the haunting memory Mike had forced him to live with.

----------------

Will blinked himself awake, cleaning the dry tear stains off his cheek.

Once he sat up in bed, the memories of last night hit him like a truck. Mike kissing his nose, the two of them cuddling, the massage...

Will forced himself to push those thoughts behind him as he walked down to the kitchen, seeing nobody home he walked over to the clock, seeing it was 2:37.

“Gosh I slept in...” he said under his breath as he walked over to the cabinet and made himself a bowl of cereal, dropping his spoon into the bowl with a plop, the milk splashing onto the counter.

He let out a frustrated sigh as he cleaned it with his sleeve, not wanting to go grab paper towels. He stirred his cereal, staring down at the flakes as they slowly soaked in the milk.

He ate a couple bites before he lost his appetite, walking over to the sink and dumping the rest of the soggy flakes down the sink, practically throwing the bowl. This silly situation with Mike was truly driving him mad when he thought about it.

Suddenly, the familiar noise of the phone ringing cut through the house. Why did he always get calls at the worst timings? First when he was sleeping, then when he was pissed off.

He walked over to the phone, letting out a deep sigh before picking up. “Byers residence.” He snapped, closing his eyes as he waited for response, to find out who was interrupting his “blissful” morning.

“Will... Are you good?” Mike spoke, and Will swore he could hear his voice quiver near the end of his sentence.

“Shit. Mike... Sorry, just a bad morning...” He mumbled, guilt washing over him as he realized he had snapped at Mike, he twirled the phone cord in his fingers, waiting for Mike to respond again, to find out if he had just messed things up again between the two of them.

“Want to come over?” He offered, his tone slightly off now, it had shifted. “Be there in 10." Will responded, hanging up the phone and quickly walking over to change into a sweater and pair of black pajama pants.

He practically jumped onto his bike as he pedaled down the familiar streets to Mike’s house, the ride there was much easier in the daytime, considering he could control his negative thoughts that would usually haunt him as he biked these roads.

He knocked lightly on the Wheeler’s door, hoping that Mike would answer considering he didn’t have the patience for Holly today. Definitely not today. His prayers were answered as Mike opened the door, a small frown on his face.

“Come...” He mumbled, taking Will’s hand in his as he led Will up to his room, the stairs lightly creaking under their footsteps. Will glanced down at the two of their hands, the way they seemed to almost fit perfectly together, and for a split second, Will wondered if their bodies could fit just as perfect together as their hands did.

As Mike shut the door behind him, he instantly pulled Will into a hug, his head hanging low, resting on Will’s shoulder. Will hesitated for a moment before hugging him back, confusion washing over him as he did so.

“You okay...?” He whispered into Mike’s hair, softly rubbing Mike's back in a circular motion. Mike nodded, gripping Will’s sweater harder before releasing Will, meeting his eyes again.

“Did it work?” Mike questioned, lightly fidgeting with the sleeve of his own sweater. “Did what work?” Will asked, confusion coming back to him again.

“Do you feel better?” Mike replied, a small pink coming to his cheeks that made Will fall into a train of thoughts, leaving Mike hanging. Why was he blushing? Why can’t you just spit out what I think you’ve been thinking? Why can't I just fall to my knees and confess to you, beg you to see me the way I see you?

“Will...?” Mike whispered, searching Will’s gaze. Will cleared his throat, nodding. “Sorry, just... Thinking about your question, you know?” He mumbled, walking over to Mike's bed and falling backwards, his back hitting the bed with a soft thud. He stared up at the ceiling, letting out a loud sigh.

Mike walked over, sitting down beside him and looking down at him, the same small frown from earlier coming back. “So it didn’t work?” He questioned, reaching up to move a piece of Will’s hair out of his face.

Will shook his head, a small smile flickering for a moment as Mike touched his hair, and Mike must have caught it because he ran his hand through Will’s hair, making Will sit up and shake his head to fix his bangs, a smile on his face once again, this time staying.

“Do you like it when I play with your hair?” Mike mumbled, bringing his hand up once again to ruffle Will’s hair, then bringing it to the back of Will’s head as he softly twirled it, making Will laugh. “Hm?” Mike hummed, still waiting for an answer.

“Maybe...” Will mumbled, his eyes leaving Mikes as he looked away, a red tint of embarrassment starting to appear on his cheeks. Mike let out a small laugh, sliding his hand from the back of Will’s head to his jawline, turning his face back towards him.

Will froze, his smile faltering for a moment as he saw the look on Mike’s face.

“Do you like it when I play with your hair...?” Will asked nervously, trying to distract himself from the way Mike’s gaze would occasionally drift down to Will’s lips. When Will spoke Mike’s eyes flickered back up, and he cleared his throat.

“I thought I made that pretty clear yesterday…” He sighed, the look in his eyes still lingering, the one Will couldn’t seem to put a name on.

“Oh, right.” Will whispered, thinking back to yesterday's events, Mike kissing his neck and Will lightly tugging on his hair... The way Mike’s lips felt on Will’s neck... Will pushed the memory away, not wanting to fall too deep into thought.

Then Mike slipped his hand to the back of Will’s head, and Will’s guilty thoughts took over again.

Mike’s eyes flickered between Will’s lips and his eyes, that look in his eyes again, and this time Will could put a name on it. It was hunger.

“Mike...?” He whispered, running his tongue along his lips nervously. “Hm?” He hummed, his grip in Will’s hair tightened, making Will gasp.

Mike leaned forward, leaving a few inches between them, his eyes flickered down to Will’s lips one last time before bringing his head down to Will’s neck, making Will freeze.

“What... What are you doing...?” He whispered.

“Nothing, unless you want me to do something?” Mike mumbled against his skin, making Will gasp slightly. “I... Don’t care what you do...” Will whispered, bringing his hands up, one wrapping around Mike's back and the other holding the back of his head, fingers tangling into his soft curls.

Then he felt it, Mike's lips on his neck once again, for the second time in 48 hours, and it felt even better then the first time. Mike lightly scraped his teeth along Will’s shoulder, making Will let out a soft whimper.

Will hesitated for a moment before lightly tugging on Mike's head, not pulling him anywhere, just pulling on his hair.

Mike moaned against Will’s neck, making Will do the same, and Will tugged again, this time to bring Mike to eye level.

Mike stared, confusion clouding his expression, but the hunger in his eyes was still very clear. “I just wanted to see your face...” Will whispered, lightly tugging on Mike's hair again, trying to hear another one of his noises.

Mike closed his eyes for a moment as Will lightly pulled on his hair, letting out a whine. “You can’t keep doing that Will... I can’t trust myself when you do that...” Mike whispered, eyes fluttering open to the sight of a bright red Will.

Mike let out a small laugh, his thumb running over Will’s cheek. “Why are you so red?” He asked, bringing his face closer to Will’s until their noses were touching. “You-... Your reactions...” He whispered, the red not leaving his face.

MIke laughed, shaking his head, making their noses brush a couple times, which obviously didn’t help Will’s state.

Then the vibe shifted, Mike ran his tongue over his lips, and it gently brushed Will’s lips as well, then Mike’s gaze had shifted down to Will’s lips.

He hesitated for a moment, looking up at Will for a moment, scanning his eyes to see if he was allowed to proceed, and Will nodded, letting out a shaky breath.

Then he closed the gap, their lips meeting softly, hesitant. Then the mood switched, Mike began pressing harder, tracing his tongue lightly against Will’s bottom lip, asking for access, Will’s mouth parted almost instantly, and Mike was quick to bring his tongue into Will’s mouth.

Without breaking the kiss, Will slowly climbed into Mike’s lap, his hands tangled in his hair, Mike gasped softly against his mouth as Will’s weight shifted onto him, lightly biting Will’s bottom lip, which made Will moan softly.

Will whimpered as he felt cold hands on the skin of his waist, Mike's hands had somehow traveled there. Mike pulled away for a moment, and he was thankful he did. The sight of Will Byers with slick parted lips and messy hair was truly something beautiful.

“You are so beautiful.” Mike whispered as he pressed soft kisses along Will’s jaw line, trailing down to his ear, lightly nibbling on it, making Will tighten his grip on his hair slightly.

“You and your hair pulling...” Mike whispered into Will’s ear, making him shiver. “You love it.” He responded, his voice soft and gentle.

Mike hummed, his hands finding the bottom of Will’s sweater. “Can this go?” He murmured, his head not leaving Will’s neck as he lightly bit it, his tongue trailing over it afterwards, making Will gasp each time he did so.

“Yes.” Will whispered breathlessly, and Mike was quick to slide his sweater over his head, bringing his head back down to Will’s neck.

He flipped the two of them, making Will gasp slightly as he hit the pillows with a small amount of force.

Mike pressed soft kisses along his collar bone, trailing down his chest as he pressed one last kiss just above his belly button, Will was visibly nervous, his breath shaky and his arms slightly shaky as Mike went lower and lower on his body.

Mike rested his head on Will’s stomach, letting out a sigh. “So gorgeous...” He whispered, pressing another kiss, this time lower.

“Wait- Mike... I don’t...” Will stuttered, face flushed.

Mike hummed, lifting his head up from his lowering kisses, eyebrows raising slightly as he saw Will’s nervous state, he was quick to climb back up, cupping Will’s cheek.

“You don't what baby?” Mike whispered, and the pet name made Will’s flushed state travel down his neck. Mike laughed softly, pressing a small kiss to the tip of Will’s nose.

“I don’t want to... You know... At least not- tonight...” Will mumbled, clearly embarrassed on the topic of discussion.

Mike’s eyes widened slightly for a moment before returning to normal. “Right- sorry... I don’t know what I was thinking...” He stuttered, collapsing to Will’s side. “Sorry,” Mike mumbled again, and he felt guilt swirling in his stomach, he turned to face Will, admiring him as Will turned to face him as well.

“No Mike it's okay, don't feel bad... I’m...” I’m deeply in love with you and we both know it and nobody has the courage to confess their feelings first.

Mike swallowed, hard. He ran a hand through his own hair, opening his mouth to speak, then shutting it, as if he was thinking on what to say. “I just-..” Mike sighed. “I just don’t want to mess this up.”

Will let out a small laugh, shaking his head. “It already feels messed up,” he admitted, his finger nails digging into his palms. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do if we keep pretending like this means nothing.”

Mike’s gaze snapped back to Will’s, his eyes searching his expression. “I don’t think this is nothing.”

“Then what is it?” Will asked, his voice shaking slightly as he spoke.

The silence dragged on, Mike looked deep in thought. He scooted slightly closer to Will, turning on his side to face him, their shoulders lightly brushing as he did so. “It's… Scary Will…” Mike started, hesitating before speaking again.

“If I say it out loud, I won’t be able to take it back, and it scares me.” Mike confessed.

Will’s breath caught in his throat. He turned towards Mike, their faces close again, not quite touching, but close enough to feel each other’s breath. “I know,” he whispered. “That’s why it hurts.”

Mike’s expression shifted, it had softened. Something raw breaking through the blank expression he had plastered on to hide his emotions. He reached out and laced their fingers together, like he was afraid Will might pull away.

“I don’t want to lose you,” Mike said.

“You won’t.”

The words hung between them as their foreheads pressed together, and they stayed like that for a moment. Fingers intertwined and foreheads pressed together, the sound of their breathing filling the quiet room.

Mike raised his eyebrow as he realized Will’s eyes had begun to grow glossy.

“What's wrong?” Mike whispered nervously, his face expressing how worried he was as he grabbed Will’s jaw, making him face him. “Will...?” He whispered, his hand shifting to cup Will’s cheek.

“I-...” Will started, his voice cracking at the end, how was he supposed to get a sentence out? “Why can’t we just confess our feelings?” Will whispered, his voice shaky as he spoke, his lip trembling slightly as he blinked, tears falling as he did so.

Mike tensed up, freezing for a moment before snapping back to reality as he saw tears fall. He was quick to wipe them with his sleeve, his eyes flickering between Will’s.

“What do you mean...?” Mike stammered, his eyes full of nervousness as he felt the clawing feeling forming in his throat now as well. This conversation was going to get emotional fast.

“You know what I mean...” Will responded, his voice breaking as he spoke, his sweater catching the tears as they fell from Will’s eyes.

“Will...” Mike whispered, leaning forward till their foreheads were touching, his hand shifting to the side of his head. “Do you want me to go first?” Mike trembled, the sight of Will crying was tearing him apart, especially when he was part of the reason behind it.

Will nodded, sniffling as he lightly played with Mike’s curls, trying to distract himself from the tears falling down his face. Mike let out a shaky breath and nodded as well, clearing his throat.

“Not a day has gone past in these past few months that I haven’t dreamed about you... I love you Will.” Mike stated, let out a heavy shaky breath once he finished speaking.

Will was frozen, he knew Mike had liked him, he just didn’t know how much he thought about him, the way he thought about him. “Mike...” Will whispered, wrapping his arms tightly around him, pulling him close as he cried into his shoulder.

“I’ve wanted to hear those words for years...” Will whimpered, letting out soft sobs into Mike's shoulder, Mike was quick to wrap his arms around Will, burying his face into his hair.

“Years...?” Mike whispered, and Will pulled back to look at him, his nose red and tears falling down his face as he nodded. “I’ve been in love with you for years Mike.” Will murmured, his body practically on top of Mike’s now.

Mike stared up at him, frozen before he pulled Will down on top of him, hugging him tightly. “I love you so much...” Mike whispered into his hair, rubbing Will’s back in soft circles as Will’s crying slowly came to a stop.

Will pulled away again, holding himself up above Mike. “I love you too, Mike.” Will answered, Mike's gaze flickered to Will’s lips, and Will was quick to catch it as his gaze flicked down to Mike’s lips as well.

Mike hesitated for a moment before pulling Will down by his collar, his body falling onto Mike’s, their faces inches away. Will swallowed, his face flushed.

“You’re shaking.” Mike whispered, and Will nodded. “I can’t help it, not when we're like this.” Will murmured.

Mike let out a small laugh as he cupped Will’s tear stained cheek, his thumb lightly rubbing it. He hesitated for a moment, leaning in slowly to give time for Will to pull away, but time froze, and their lips met in a soft, tentative kiss.

One of Will’s hands slid to Mike’s shoulder, holding him tightly, testing if this was truly real. Mike deepened the kiss slowly, his teeth lightly biting Will’s bottom lip, earning a soft whine.

Time seemed to freeze around them, every emotion gone except for built up desperation that has been building for years, the guilt of the situation washing away with the emotions.

Will’s lips trembled against Mike's, making him smile slightly as he pulled Will closer, sitting up so that Will was sitting on his lap. Mike pulled away for a moment, getting a small look at Will before placing one last kiss on his lips before pulling away again, their foreheads pressed together.

They sat there for a moment, just catching their breath and staring into each other's eyes before Mike spoke. “I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of you…”

Will laughed softly, then nodded. “Me either.”

And for the first time, Will felt pure bliss. Pure happiness with Mike, and Will knew, he didn’t even have to speak, because for once, he knew what Mike was thinking. He loved Will Byers.
