I got issues but you got them too

Summary:

“I love you, too. You already know that.”

“Never hurts to hear it,” Shay teased with a smirk.

Baran shook her head, giving the woman a forehead kiss before looking back into her eyes.

Chapter 1: let alone the one you love

Chapter Text

Shayan was down in the E.R. department, heading towards the nurses' station, where she found Javadi, Whitaker, and Santos.

“Well, if this isn’t my favourite residents and student doctor,” She exclaimed with a smile, leaning on the station.

The three of them turned to look at her.

“Don’t you have an emergency to get to?” Trinity dismissed in her usual demeanor.

“It’s nice to see you too, Trin,” Shay told her with that same smile. “Besides grumpy over here, how’s it going?” She asked the two others.

“Louie died,” Whitaker started, which wiped the smile off of Shayan’s face.

“What? How?”

“Pulmonary hemorrhage from liver failure,” Whitaker told her.

Shay nodded, pushing aside her feelings. “And how are you feeling?”

“It’s not his first time losing a patient,” Trinity told Shay, who just flicked her at the back of the head. “Ow, bitch,” she muttered.

“Still, you okay, Dennis?”

Whitaker looked at her with a small smile that did not quite reach his eyes, “I will be.”

“That’s good,” Shay told him with a nod. “Don’t forget to talk to the counselor, guys. It’s really important,” She told them, giving Santos a pointed look, the latter rolling her eyes. Javadi had been quiet for the entire duration of the conversation, focusing on her chart.

“It’s Crash’s birthday soon,” Trinity told her once she caught the confused look on Shay’s face.

“Oh my! Vic, that’s great. You’re turning 21. We should organise something,” Shay told her with a big smile.

Victoria gave them an awkward look. “Oh, I don’t like my birthday. It’s not necessary.”

“Uh uh,” Shayan shook her head. “I’m going to create a group chat tonight. We’ll do something, it’s a great opportunity to unwind after a shift! You guys down?” She asked, turning to Whitaker and Santos, who nodded.

“Perlah and Princess, too,” Trinity added.

“And Yolanda is always down to party, so that’s that. I’m sure Cassie’s going to say yes,” Shay listed, writing things down on her phone.

“Are you gonna invite the whole hospital?” Victoria deadpanned.

“What? No,” The woman started. “Not Robinovitch.” That got the others to laugh. “No, but really, you should celebrate, Vic. I’m not gonna do anything you don’t like so just send me info on who you want to be there and who you don’t… like, your mom.”

Trinity burst out a laugh, Whitaker smiling as Javadi just shook her head, slightly amused, “Very funny.”

“I know,” She said, rubbing the girl’s back briefly. “Okay, I’ll let you guys be! Try not to die before end of shift!”

“No promises,” They responded all in unison.

Shay laughed, turning back to head towards the elevator, but was interrupted mid-walk by a hand on her back.

“Hey,” a soft voice said. It was Baran.

“Hey, hi!” Shay smiled at her, hugging her briefly.

“What are you doing here?” Baran asked her with a smile.

“Oh, nothing. Just checking on the residents, really,” She said, pointing to the station where the three were bickering like children.

“Shouldn’t that be my job?” The attending inquired, with that flirty expression that always got Shayan weak in the knees.

“Stop doing that,” Shay told her with a pointed finger, going back to walk towards the elevator.

“What did I do?” Baran laughed, following her.

“You know exactly what!” The surgeon exclaimed, not bothering to look at the woman next to her.

“Are you gonna avoid eye contact for long?”

“Depends, are you gonna keep looking at me?”

“We’re having a conversation, Dr Sadaat! Where else am I supposed to look?” The attending laughed.

Do you flirt with all of your coworkers like that?” Shayan asked in Farsi with a teasing smile.

I am not flirting,” Baran simply said, finally looking away.

Could have sworn that’s what led us to be married in Vegas at 3 am on a random Thursday.

“You know what,” The woman started. “I don’t think I want to talk anymore,” She said, starting to walk away.

Shayan laughed, catching her by one arm gently. “I’m kidding. Well, half joking because that did happen.”

Baran just glared at her. Nonetheless, a smile made its way onto her face.

The two were interrupted by the elevator’s opening, well, more by the person coming out of the elevator.

“Shay! I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” Yolanda said before stopping in her tracks once she saw who Shayan was with. “Oh. Now, I know why!”

“Dr. Garcia, nice to see you again,” The attending said before turning back to Shay. “I should get back, but great talking to you,” She added with a smile before leaving.

Shay just looked at her go with a shake of the head.

“What about bros over hoes?” Yolanda asked her.

“What about it?” Shay asked back. “If you needed me, you could have paged me.”

“Did not want to interrupt a make-out session with doctor wishful thinking over there,” Yolanda joked. “What were you doing here in the first place?”

“Checking on the residents,” Shay simply said.

“Why?” The Latina frowned.

“Because I was bored and because I care. Not like a certain someone!”

“Okay, that was low,” Yolanda said as they got in the elevator.

“Your girl is extra grumpy today. Did you do something?” Shayan asked, turning to look at her best friend in case she was going to try to lie.

“First of all, not my girl.”

“Oh, so you don’t mind if, say, Emery or Parker got that?” Yolanda just glared at the woman next to her. “That’s what I thought. You really need to get your head out of your ass and go get the girl.”

“Please, what do you know about getting the girl? You haven’t gotten with anyone in years!” Yolanda clapped back.

“I’m married.”

“Please! To a woman you haven’t seen since medical school! You’ve got your share of one-night stands. What’s different between you and me?”

“Yeah, but I’ve actually already gotten into a serious relationship. Can you say the same?” Yolanda stayed quiet. Shay sighed. “Look, you wanna have your fun, that’s okay. But with Santos? I wouldn’t.”

The Latina had a closed-off look on her face; she was thinking. She knew Shayan was right. Trinity was way too fragile; everybody knew this from her witty remarks and her involvement, which was sometimes too much in some cases. Yolanda knew because she’d seen the scars, Shayan knew because, well, she knows how to detect things like that.

“Yoyo?” Shayan asked for the third time.

“What did you say?” Yolanda asked, shaking out of her thoughts.

“You good? I did not mean to be mean or anything.”

“Oh, no, you’re right. I was just thinking about how fucked up this shit is.”

“Tell me about it,” Shay said as they finally got out of the elevator.
