Chapter Text
Rin rummaged through the drawer to find the TV remote—it was muted for a while anyway, with some wildlife documentary on—and turned it off. Moonlight seeped through the thin curtains, illuminating her side of the bed and leaving Venka, who was curled up on her side in the shadows. She looked tranquil in her sleep, in Rin’s baggy clothes because she forgot to bring hers, her silken hair sprawled on the pillow.
Rin checked her messages before she put her phone away and wrapped herself around the taller girl’s body; her right arm was already around Venka’s waist anyway. The covers were kicked to the floor, inside the room still warm despite the chilly night wind outside. Her girlfriend’s redwood fragrance filled her nostrils, and she nuzzled closer.
“Venka?” She lazily placed her chin on Venka’s shoulder. “Venka?”
Venka stirred sluggishly in response, squeezing Rin’s hand instinctively. “Hmm?”
“If a jellyfish doesn't have a brain, how does it know it's alive?”
“What?” Venka turned her head at that, her voice husky with sleep.
“Like, does it even know it’s alive?”
Venka gave an audible sigh, which Rin found undeniably attractive. “Go to sleep, Rin. For the gods’ sake.”
Rin was swaying between consciousness and unconsciousness when Venka’s voice once again filled the room. “Did you really watch that bilgewater documentary? Just hand me your phone. Look what you got into my head!”
Rin smirked and thought about her phone on the nightstand; at that moment, it felt so far away, so she settled with snuggling closer and slinging her leg over Venka’s. “Too lazy for that. Let’s check it in the morning.”
“Oh, you.”
