That plush mouth wore a knowing smile. “Does God tempt you too?” When Shane didn’t answer, he pressed on. “Maybe he tempts you most. Like the man in the Bible. Job? Torturing his most faithful.”
Shane had never said it out loud. Then again, no one had ever asked so plainly. It felt dangerous to admit to such weakness. But he wanted to see the good in people, needed to believe that this man was in search of salvation. That Shane being honest might help him. “Yes,” he admitted on an exhale. “He tempts me. But I like the chance to prove my faith.”
“I see. Very brave, to let God test you as he pleases. Is uh... masochistic, maybe? You like the challenge.”
