Work Text:
If you were to ask around, you’d get pretty positive feedback about the Succhiare Resort. How they have a free breakfast bar (only on Thursday’s, 5-9, come check it out! - Management), how there’s a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean to the left, and how the four pools they have are luxurious. Somewhat.
Big and all different sized, one inside pool and three outside ones. All perfect and clear watered for the most part, with lounging chairs, and a bar that can and would supply tropical drinks for days. It was expensive, yes, but the rich people who spent their money here had good taste.
One of the things that also make a pool feel high-end are present and ready to help staff members. Lifeguards definitely fall under all of these categories!
…Well
It’s great to have life guards at pools! It gives the guest a good sense of safety and security, yada yada.
But, that’s where the resort sort of falls short. These life guards they had were, well, problematic. Yeah, okay, they sucked ass for the most part.
You see, working here was almost like just spending some time in a dorm with familiar, funny roommates. At least to Gilbert it was. Despite some of his exterior he actually could be and was serious about the job when he wanted to be!
But, obviously, why be too serious when you have this fun and easy of a job? Drinking with Alfred behind the lounge chairs in the indoor pool, flirting and messing with pretty little Lovino over by his pool, chatting and teasing his kid brother Ludwig who just happened to work there with him too, it was the best.
And it wasn’t to say that he was the only one doing things he wasn’t supposed to do on the clock, so don’t go looking at him like he’s the one big problem! Alfred’s secret eating and partying in the indoor pool, Lovino’s dozing off and cursing at guests, Ludwig’s spending the whole shift talking to Feliciano or blowing his whistle strictly at people who weren’t even running.
They all had their…flaws as employees. Like, a lot of flaws. It was definitely a safety hazard.
So, the Succhiare Resort didn’t have the best staff members. No, not at all. But on the bright side, they all didn’t dread going to work!
Who could resist having a blast at work? Especially when you work at this fancy of a place with fun coworkers.
It hadn’t caused any major problems or conflicts yet. All of their expectations pointed towards nothing happening! Because, why would it? They’d gotten this far.
That’s the mindset that Gilbert couldn’t help but have.
So, imagine his surprise when it backfired.
Gilbert hid behind a palm tree, hoping his bright red shorts wouldn’t give him away just yet. Just ten feet away was Lovino, sitting on his life guard tower asleep. Well, he looked to be asleep anyway.
With a grin plastered on his face he crept closer and closer before he reached the very bottom of the ladder of the chair.
It was taller than every other life guard chair for some reason. It was so funny watching Lovino dread to switch shifts to this pool and have to sit in the highest one. Suchhh a scaredy cat. Not like the awesome Gilbert! Okay, Lovino was awesome too, but not as awesome, no, no. Because look! He was sleeping on the job! Somebody could be just floating dead in his pool right now and he wouldn’t even know.
He turned his gaze to the wide pool that sat in front of them.
Just some girl trying to learn to swim with her feet and legs together. Okay…that could still technically be a hazard. Lucky for her, he was too awesome and occupied to care about that right now. He would have to clean out the pool for Lovino later though. He grimaced at all of those leaves in the shallow end.
Anyway, back to his mission at hand! Annoy the man in front of him and get one of his reactions. When he’d pout or scrunch up his face in that way it was seriously to die for, Gilbert laughed to himself. One man’s opinion.
Lovino would accept his awesome self as a boyfriend soon, he could feel it! He just needed to ask first…but he’d get there.
Romancing was one of his many professions. He just wasn’t done with his wooing yet. Lovino adored him, totally, but there was work to be done. And he was going to put the work in. How could he not? Look at the guy! Lovino’s basically a model in his opinion. With his tanned skin, his silky dark hair, his hazel eyes…
Ahem. He shook his head slightly to clear his thoughts.
He slowly climbed up the ladder of the chair, trying his best to not cause a disturbance to the other’s sleep just yet. He looked behind him and checked if anybody was watching this display.
Nope, the bartender from the counter right across from them was talking to some old guy, and the girl in the pool was recording herself swimming with her legs and arms together.
He reached the final step and loomed over Lovino. He couldn’t help but admire the sight for a second. He looked, just, so peaceful. Sure he still somehow had a pout on his lips, which he snickered silently at, but man was it crazily endearing. The crease between his eyebrows that usually was present had no place on his face.
Gilbert and Lovino had known each other way longer than they’d started working here. Believe it or not, but he could tell that the Italian had in fact warmed up to him over time. Maybe not fully, but he did come to hang out usually when he asked, so what does that say? It says that he liked him enough! But…Gilbert doesn’t it want it to just be ‘enough’.
He didn’t just want to be warmed up to. He wanted to be on fire with him…
Ahem, ahem!
Looking back over his shoulder one last time, he started to shake the life guard tower by holding on to both sides of the chair’s arms. Lovino stirred but ultimately didn’t open his eyes. Of course, he took that as a challenge.
Gilbert started shaking it faster and more intense, making the legs of the chair pick up off of the floor side to side.
That made the other man open his eyes.
As soon as he did, obviously and sadly, he was greeted with a pale face and red eyes looking down at him with a smirk. Immediately after scowling at him, he registered the not-so-safe shaking that was happening. He yelped and clung to one of the arms of the chair.
“Stop it you bastard! What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” He shouted at him, reaching to hold down Gilbert’s wrists and stabilize the tower. Unfortunately, that did absolutely nothing but make the albino flush a bit.
“You need to set a wake up alarm, Lovi! I took it upon my awesome self!” He grunted, going even harder to shake the chair. It was teetering around, and it felt as if before it could even tip over the long plastic legs would break.
Lovino wrapped his arms around the back of the chair and used his right leg to kick Gilbert in the chest, arms, face, wherever he could reach and land a solid kick. “Are you trying to kill me? Get the fuck off!”
The albino did find this amusing, because it was! But he didn’t really want to scare the other man too much. If they did actually fall, he’d totally catch him, and then he’d fall for him on the spot. Dream big, receive big.
Right as he was going to put the shaking to a stop and just laugh instead and you know, maybeee ask if he could buy him a drink from the bar, Lovino’s foot strongly collided right with his upper chest, sending him flying off. He let out a sound of surprise and luckily landed in the pools deep end, though it was a close one.
He scrambled to the surface in something that almost looked like a panic and quickly grabbed hold of the edge of the pool with both hands and immediately looked up at a staring Lovino. When he saw that he had in fact landed safely in the water, his stare turned to a glare as he climbed down the tower.
Gilbert put his white whistle to his mouth and attempted to blow it at him, though the water that had gotten in it prevented the loud sound he was going for. “No pushing people into the po-“
Before he could finish the sentence, Lovino had thrown a life guard floaty right at his head, successfully pushing him back down into the water.
He quickly pushed his head back up again and coughed. “Hey, wait!” He called out, haphazardly climbing out of the water.
Lovino, who was walking towards the shallow end to the left, turned back with a scowl. “What, bastard?” He rolled his eyes.
He looked around again, and leaned down and in close enough to hear Lovino’s fastening heart beat to whisper right in his face, “I think the indoor pool is calling our names.”
Lovino recoiled at those words and gave him an ever so flustered look.
“I don’t need to hear about your fantasies, bastard!” He exclaimed.
The albino paused. Huh? How did he know?! He wasn’t ready yet! He needed to build himself up more!
“W-huh? No, no!” He cackled forcefully. “I meant that Alfred brought some alcohol and he’s waiting for me in there!” Playing it cool. So cool.
He wasn’t lying, though. That was something that he’d been looking forward to all day.
Look, Gilbert was a pretty serious, determined, and strategic guy. He did take this job serious as hell! It’s just…having fun was necessary! Especially with alcohol.
And today hadn’t exactly treated him kindly, either. He had kind of sort of had a wet dream and woke up with a surprise. The contents of the dream that caused this could be guessed with almost no effort.
So, whatever, nothing worth getting that frustrated over, right? Just a start. He had begrudgingly gotten dressed in work attire and of course, his flip flops had broke while he was trying to make his way into the kitchen. He had tried to borrow his brothers, but he only had one pair which he would be using!
He ended up having to drive to the store, buy the cheapest flip flops he could find, and hurry off to work. When he got there, the boss chewed his ear off for what, like, 40 minutes? He needed a break!
Yeah, there were bigger problems in the world, but this was just a minor thing that paved the way for some relaxation and ease of mind.
For some reason, Lovino got even more red and looked down. “Oh.” He muttered.
They stood in silence for all of five seconds before the Italian fired back up. “Why should I come then? You two idiotas seem fine on your own.” He looked away.
Gilbert paused. “Yeah…” He murmured, however instantly regretting it.
Even more irritation along with some other emotion sprouted on Lovino’s face as he backed away. “Then just go with him alone, bastard.”
He didn’t spare him another glance before beginning walking away again. Gilbert, now devoted to hanging out with Lovino more, reached out and put a hand on his shoulder, pulling him back.
“It’ll be even awesomer if you come with me,” He shrugged super nonchalantly, grinning.
Lovino turned his head back slightly to face him and gave him almost a conflicted look. He couldn’t tell what that facial expression said.
His face heated up once the realization dawned on him of what he had just said. It was already hot from the sentence he’d just said ten seconds ago. All of this heat on his face that kept occurring could’ve left a scar or a mark. Would he be into that?…
Yeah, yeah he would. Because it was for Lovino, from Lovino, and about Lovino. This was embarrassing.
“I mean, with us. Us! Me and Alfred, in the indoor pool. Right now. Come on Lovi, it’ll be fun!” He corrected himself, not lifting the hand on the other’s shoulder.
“Fine! Only because if I don’t come you two jerks will probably drink yourselves to death and drown.” He announced, slightly tilting his head up.
“Right, whatever you say schatz.” Gilbert smirked and said sarcastically. “What would we do without you?”
That earned him a scoff and his hand being shrugged off.
He then slung an arm around Lovino’s shoulders and looked around one last time. Nothing out of the ordinary or anything that looked like it needed tending to.
Gilbert would sneak off all of the time, as said earlier, but usually it wasn’t with Lovino. What if they just ditched the plans with Alfred and made out behind the mini bar or something? Or maybe they could just go behind the indoor pool instead anyway. Or they could sneak inside and he could buy a room…
Jeez, keep it in your pants, Gilbert!
He let out a short breath and looked down quickly at his shorts, a bulge making itself clear. He put the back of his palm to his mouth and cursed under his breath, looking away.
Lovino stood beside him, eyes narrowing in confusion. He was staring at his face, not anything below that. Phew!
The man glared at the prominent arm wrapped around him and then at the strange expression on Gilbert’s face.
The heat kept pooling up in his abdomen and groin as he started to register how good Lovino’s shoulders felt. His mind usually didn’t wander, but when it did, especially in a situation like this, it could get tricky. He couldn’t help the images that popped up into his brain of Lovino. He could feel a tingling sensation all over his body.
How he’d slip his fingers all over him, what he’d look like beneath him, looking up with trembling, cloudy eyes. The noises he’d make. He was already wet with pool water, he could just picture him all wet with something else. Uh oh.
“Bastard…?” Lovino asked after a moment, hesitantly. Gilbert’s arm had slipped off unconsciously.
He blinked hard and looked around, uncontrollably looking down to see the growing bulge. He gritted his teeth and forced a grin.
“Sorry, I was just thinking about how awesome I was today!” He tried to quickly reply.
Lovino gave him an unimpressed look. “You wish,”
Gilbert smirked. “I’m serious! You don’t even know! Two hours ago, a little tiny kid was struggling to stay afloat, so I awesomely jumped in and threw him in the air and he landed safely on the steps in the shallow end!” He triumphantly exclaimed. It was a lie, yeah, but a pretty awesome funny one! And if a kid had actually been drowning he would have absolutely done that anyway.
“Oh my fucking god,” Lovino snorted, looking away. “you idiota.” He shook his head.
What could be said? He was just too funny.
“Come on, Alfred’s probably whining and drinking it all for himself!” Gilbert said, huffing a laugh.
Lovino mumbled something under his breath in response that was too quiet to hear, but it was too easy to assume that it was a nice string of Italian curses.
They moved forward, trying to duck behind anything possible. Palm trees, tall guests, anything that would shield them from being spotted by any snitches or, god forbid, their boss and supervisor.
“Hey, pretty sure I saved you back there, by the way. A thank you for the awesome me would be appreciated.” Gilbert shrugged, crouching down slightly as they walked past the mini bar.
Lovino snapped his head towards him and scowled. “Saved me from what? You were about to kill both of us!” He hissed.
The other man put his hands up in mock surrender and shifted his eyes away. “Saved you from getting caught sleeping on the job or maybe dying in your sleep. I’m like your knight in shining armor.” He looked at Lovino with a smug expression. “I long for some gratitude!”
Just then, as Lovino was going to start yelling his head off and rip a tree out of the ground and slam it down onto him, he felt eyes on him from behind. He paused and turned his head to see one of the towel laundry people staring at both of them hiding behind a display of palm trees.
Except they weren’t really hiding, because the palm trees were about as thin as a street lamp.
Lovino stared back at the other employee awkwardly, trying to direct the others attention elsewhere. When that didn’t work, he furrowed his brow and mouthed cuss words while keeping his eyes locked on his.
Gilbert raised an eyebrow and looked past him, seeing the laundry employee. “Why are they just everywhere all the time?” He said under his breath. Every time he thinks he’s alone in the staff locker room or in the bathroom here, he’s not! They’ll be in the corner or something!
But, the odds of them telling the boss that they’re not at their towers…not so high. Gilbert just has a gut feeling about it!
“Don’t worry, he probably won’t say anything.” He said, moving past the trees. Lovino stayed behind him, following and letting out a groan.
The indoor pool was glassed in with large windows, a stained glass ceiling, and a fake, large rock structure in the back corner that contained separate bathrooms. There were lounge chairs to the right and tables with phones that could call food places or the mini bar for delivery.
It was seriously some next level stuff. Alfred had no place to complain, he easily had the best pool!
Gilbert opened the big glass door and led Lovino inside. The air was incredibly more humid than outside, and the smell that hit his nose could only be described as chlorine and something sugary.
Beside the pool was the life guard tower, which Alfred stood beside, looking at his phone. As soon as he heard the door open, he looked up and immediately brightened.
“Dudes! I was just about to call you! What’s with the lagging, I was so bored!” He exclaimed.
Gilbert grinned and nodded. “Ja, sorry, sorry. I had some things to attend to first.” He gestured towards Lovino who stood beside him, arms crossed and face tilted slightly down with a scowl. “And look! Lovi wanted to come with me to hang out. He practically begged me. And who am I to say no?”
Lovino instantly shot away and punched him in the side. “Bastard! You asked me to come! Don’t fucking lie to make me sound bad!” He yelled.
Alfred gritted his teeth and pushed the two of them farther apart. “Dude, dude! Don’t worry! I could’ve guessed that.” He laughed.
That of course didn’t stop the profanities slip and slide their way out of the Italian’s mouth.
“Ow, ow! Gott, Lovi, you should be a boxer or something.” Gilbert winced and rubbed his side that had been brutally attacked.
The other man replied with a sour mutter that he couldn’t quite make out.
The pout on his face was everything. Just…
“Anyways, come check it out dudes! The gas station was having a discount!” Alfred interrupted his thoughts. They all walked to the tower where a black, rather destroyed backpack sat.
Alfred picked it up with some trouble and crouched down on the damp cement floor, opening it up and turning it all the way upside down. Colorful balls full of liquid of all different sizes poured out at once, clinking violently once hitting the floor.
Gilbert and Lovino, who sat next to each other on the floor in front of Alfred, stared at them with wide eyes.
“Are you kidding me? You said you were bringing authentic German bier!” Gilbert bursted, clawing a hand in frustration.
“I mean, yeah dude, I did say that, but these were on sale! And they’re way better! Look at all the cool colors!” Alfred said back, hovering his hand all over the balls on the ground. On all of them, the words ‘BuzzBallz’ displayed itself in a big font.
“Way better? These are way better than German bier?” Gilbert asked rhetorically, an offended expression making its way onto his face.
Lovino scoffed and rolled his eyes. “Everything is better than that piss water!” He exclaimed.
Gilbert paused and shifted his attention to him, the frustration and anger and whatever else fizzling down into something like playfulness.
“Loviii! You don’t mean that!” He said, tilting Lovino’s head to the right with two of his fingers.
The Italian swatted away his hand and rolled his eyes even more aggressively than the first time. “Yes I do, bastard.”
Gilbert snorted and shrugged, scanning all of the drinks that lay in front of him. He quickly picked up a bright red one and tossed it up in the air between his hands before laying it in Lovino’s lap.
“I guess we’ll have to test that with these,” he said, grabbing it again and now putting it into the other man’s hands for him.
His skin was always so warm, and it only turned warmer with the blush that appeared.
Gilbert nervously chuckled and tried to keep his smirk.
“The dude at the counter was super nice, too. Dude just gave me a free bag of chips for free! I didn’t even have to ask more than three times!” Alfred said, picking up one of the larger drinks.
Looking back at Lovino, Gilbert saw the man just about to put the drink to his lips before he scoffed and rolled his eyes again. “This is stupid. I could be drinking Barbaresco at my own pool right now instead of this weird-…little circle thing.”
Gilbert grinned and shrugged sarcastically. “Just imagine that it was a tomato! That’ll get you going.”
His reply was a pointed glare that he was oh so used to.
Alfred smacked his lips and set the now absolutely empty bottle down onto the concrete floor. “Yeah, this shit is amazing. Seriously dudes, just go for it! I didn’t buy like fifteen of these just for myself.” He tossed a small green one over to Gilbert. “They don’t even taste like alcohol!”
Gilbert raised an eyebrow but opened it. He looked over at Lovino who was taking slow sips of his red one. He quickly recoiled and scowled at it. “It tastes like shit!” He exclaimed.
“No it doesn’t dude! Stop lying and just try it again!” Alfred retorted back, already downing a smaller blue one.
“Shut up, bastard! Fine!” He hissed, taking the bottle back to his lips and sipping again. Of course, immediately he spit it out and stuck his tongue out.
Gilbert, though he really didn’t want to dwell on the thought for long, wished he could’ve caught it in his mouth since it came from Lovino’s.
“Hey! Don’t waste it!” Alfred whined.
Lovino gave a strong scowl and narrowed his eyebrows. Before the other man could stop him, he had began dumping all of the liquid out of his bottle onto the floor.
Alfred made a protesting noise and snatched it right out of his hands.
“Dude! Not cool! Why did you even come if you were just going to do this?” He asked, sipping the last two drops of red left.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry,” Gilbert cut in. “I’ll taste test the next one for him! I’ll see if it’s up to standard.” He joked, gently grabbing Lovino’s jaw and cheeks and squeezing. It was as if he had cute aggression. Ohhh, the pout it made. The flustered look that appeared. Gilbert would probably have to sit cross legged or excuse himself to the bathroom soon.
Lovino ripped his hand off of his face and swatted at him, immediately looking away.
“Let’s see, which flavor do we do…” Gilbert qlooked over them. He put his original green one down and instead chose a light pink one.
“Okay, watch me drink it first.” He said, turning Lovino’s head up to face him. The man’s face scrunched up and he slightly fought his hand, but ultimately lost.
“Don’t touch me, bastard.” He muttered while actively leaning into the touch. Gilbert snickered and shrugged mockingly.
“I don’t know, it seems to me that you might like it. No need to run from awesomeness!” He exclaimed with his scratchy voice.
Lovino sent a glare that could cut him if he wasn’t too careful, but it didn’t cover up the blush. Nothing ever did, hah!
Seriously, when was Gilbert just going to make a move? He was dying here! He loved messing and teasing and touching him, he wanted to know no bounds.
If he blushed when he poked fun and if he didn’t bite his head off when he called him cute little pet names, where did that put them? He needed to know this! Forgive him for not having much patience but it was getting down to the wire here and Lovino could might as well be a forest fire maneuvering around the one thing covered in gasoline.
“Run from awesomeness my ass! Fuck off already, idiota!” Lovino shot back, crossing his arms with a scowl.
Gilbert grinned and opened it up with admittedly a bit of a struggle, and took a slow sip. Citrus, incredibly sweet yet tart. Yeah, maybe Alfred did have good taste. Still not better than German Beer though, hell no!
He pulled it away from his lips and licked them a bit. “That wasn’t bad at all! It’s safe for you to drink, the awesome me confirms it.” He smirked, passing it to Lovino who was still scowling, but the curiosity in his eyes was evident.
He clicked his tongue against his teeth and held the circular bottle up. “I don’t know why I’m taking flavor advice from a German,” he scoffed. But, alas, he titled it up to his mouth and didn’t recoil once the liquid hit his tongue.
Gilbert couldn’t help but feel proud of himself. And, well, a bit flustered. It was not only an indirect kiss, don’t even get him started on that, but Lovino was actually willingly sharing a drink with him because he said it was good!
“See! I told you!” Alfred put his arms out, slightly spilling the new one he had opened.
Lovino pulled the now empty bottle from his lips and immediately threw it at the man with what looked like all of the force he could muster up. Unfortunately, that meant a lot.
Alfred gawked and tried to deflect it to no avail. “Hey! What gives?” He whined again.
“What gives is that you’re annoying! So shut up!” Lovino retorted, looking for another pink bottle in the pile.
He put it in his lap and looked at Gilbert as briefly as possible before turning his attention back to his lap.
Why was this so hard?
Better question, why was Gilbert so hard?
The light from the stained glass ceiling shone down on them faintly, tracing over the cement floor and their skin with colors such as blue, pink, yellow, and orange. The image on the roof was a sight to behold.
A delicate design of blue flowers with pink and orange details surrounding it in swirls and lines, and then the center piece, a detailed yellow sun.
He slowly sipped one of the drinks as he traced over it.
“My Nonno’s house used to have stained glass,” Lovino suddenly said.
He pulled his attention away from the roof and looked down at the other man, who was looking up.
“It was of an Italian sparrow surrounded by daisies. I would always treasure it, but always nearly break it when I’d get angry or be playing.” He seemed to be replaying memories in his head, suddenly looking a bit guilty.
“Maybe one day I’ll learn how to do it.” Gilbert thought out loud. His thoughts were interrupted by a snort from Lovino and Alfred.
Alfred shrugged and placed down his bottle. “I don’t know man, I couldn’t picture you ever doing that, like ever.” He exclaimed woozily.
Lovino laughed again but shook his head.
Gilbert scoffed and shook his head violently. So much doubt installed! Sure, learning how to do such a skill wouldn’t be easy, but he could handle it! He had learned many things in a short amount of time.
“I’m going to prove both of you dummkompfs wrong! Just you wait for my master kills,” he said slyly. “they’ll dominate all of your little tiny baby stained glass!”
Lovino rolled his eyes and wafted his words away with a dismissive hand. “Don’t hold your breath, bastard.”
“Oh, the little Lovi doesn’t believe the awesome Gilbert?” He asked playfully, neither of them noticing Alfred stealing their drinks.
The other man huffed, but said with what could almost be called a smug smile, “No, I guess I don’t.”
Gilbert faked an appalled look for a second before raising his eyebrows and grinning. “What should I make the image then? A bottle of wine and a tomato just for you?” He teased. “Or maybe I could make it say Awesome with beer and potatoes! Endless possibilities!”
Lovino glared at him. “I’d throw up all over it, potato-bastard.” He threatened.
Alfred blinked between the two.
Gilbert leaned in closer and somewhat hesitantly, somewhat desperately, put a hand on Lovino’s thigh, grinning as much as he could without exploding.
“Then it served its purpose,” he teased once more, landing the answer with seriousness in his voice that he could tell only added more fuel to the fire.
With that, Lovino paused and narrowed his eyes at him, full of annoyance. The playful spark was still there, but you know what they say. Get Lovino riled up, get a glare that turns into a punch! And if you’re lucky you’ll get a pout! And he’ll kiss you out of frustration maybe!
Nobody says that. Just Gilbert.
The sudden object that collided against his forehead brought him back to reality. His head was forced back by the impact but he quickly brought it up and rubbed the spot.
“What the hell?” He muttered, attempting to look up at his own forehead.
He turned his gaze to the two in front of him, which gave him the clear answer of what had just happened.
Lovino sat on his knees with another ball in his lap, looking fed up and, well, incredibly guilty of the assault that had just happened.
When he saw that Gilbert had been hit and his aim had been perfect, slight smugness returned to his face.
Gilbert looked at him for a moment before smirking. “You shouldn’t have done that, püppchen.”
Being honest, that hurt like hell!
Lovino huffed out a laugh and rolled his eyes.
With that Gilbert rose and crouched above the pile or remaining drinks, grabbing a smaller one and opening it up.
He swiftly came right up to Lovino and, without a moment to waste, started pouring the blue drink right over his head.
“Heyyy! You guys are wasting them!” Alfred whined from behind.
Lovino gasped and shut his eyes tight, arms flying up to knock the bottle out of the other man’s hands.
The alcohol wet his hair almost completely, making it drip and run down his face. Some of the blue droplets stuck to his eyelashes. Some of them ran down his neck and chest.
Would Gilbert be killed if he tried to go ahead and lick them all off of him? What an idea!
Before he got the chance because he most definitely had the courage to up and do that, a sudden feeling pierced him. That sudden feeling was Lovino’s murderous glare.
Uh oh.
Did Gilbert go too far? It was just liquid, after all. But shit, Lovino probably thinks he’s a total asshole now!
“Uh, listen-“ He started. To no avail, however, for Lovino had taken Alfred’s open one and splashed it all over his face.
The drink had gotten in his nose and majorly in his mouth, which he wasn’t complaining about.
He opened his eyes out of shock from the cold and saw Lovino trying to hide his laughter.
“Dude! What the hellllll!” Alfred whined, again. “You guys are mean!”
The albino smirked and began to snicker along with the other. He grabbed the one that Alfred was just about to apparently grab for himself, and splashed it all over Lovino’s chest.
Considering how the drinks were freezing cold still somehow, he recoiled and let out a yelp.
“Okay, bastard! You’re about to be killed!” He shouted, grabbing two buzz balls off of the floor.
Gilbert grinned and stood up along with him, putting an elbow on the top of Alfred’s head and leaning himself on it. “The awesome me does not typically die, though.” He joked.
Alfred squawked and pushed him off almost immediately.
Lovino gave a small, smug grin and threw a green buzz ball right past his ear. It hit the floor with a violent sound and the green liquid came pouring out from the sheer force. “We’ll see about that, cretino!”
“Dude! Not cool! I bought these to drink and enjoy not fight and do whatever you two are doing! Come on!” Alfred complained, now looking sorrowfully at the spilt drink.
Okay, so Lovino wanted a challenge. He could give a challenge. He could give him a lot of things.
Gilbert swooped down and took two balls, reeling a hand back and aiming for Lovino’s arm. Now, he wasn’t going to go too hard or actually hit him or anything like that. But, Lovino didn’t have to know that!
Throwing them back and forth at each other and running dangerously close to the pool, and just dangerously in general considering the conditions of the ground, they continued.
Colorful alcohol flied through the air, catching Gilbert on the shoulder, Lovino on the knee, and even poor Alfred on the top of the head even with him not being a part of the festivities.
Gilbert looked ahead at Lovino, who was running forward towards one of the glass walls, but looking back at him. He had a determined look on his face, as if trying to not look amused. The small smile on his face could be considered smug, but the sweetness was all the same.
Oh, Lovino…
Suddenly, Gilbert was hastily and quite roughly pushed out of his thoughts. Before he fully fell into the water, he turned his gaze from a still running Lovino to an amused yet fed up Alfred.
The pool water in the indoor pool always seemed to have less chlorine than the others, so the sting from first opening his eyes underwater was barely existent.
He immediately looked up and saw Alfred’s clear yet blurry figure hovering over the surface. Then, Lovino’s figure came and threw a buzzball right at his head, making him almost fall over. Alfred then proceeded to try and grab Lovino’s arm, to which the other man dodged and danced around him to presumably push him in.
Gilbert watched all of this with amusement for all of ten seconds, for eventually Alfred had grabbed up Lovino and violently tossed him into the spot that the albino just so happened to be watching from.
Lovino’s face collided with Gilbert’s as he crashed into the water. On instinct, the albino put his arms around the other to keep him in place and stabilize him. Can you really stabilize people under water?
Lovino stayed with his forehead against Gilbert’s cheek for all of four seconds before kicking away, staring with frustrated eyes.
Gilbert shrugged and gestured to hold him again as a joke, totally as a joke, which made the others brow furrow even more.
Well, temporarily.
It took another four seconds for Lovino to be in Gilbert’s arms again.
Huh?
He looked down as much as he could and saw the top of the Italians head. He could practically feel the defiant pout or scowl that was most definitely displayed on his lips.
Hah! He had actually went back into his grasp! He was holding Lovino!
Gilbert tried to laugh but was quickly reminded that they were underwater where one shouldn’t open his mouth.
The skin that brushed against Lovino’s sent small bubbles up to the surface, and sent tingles all across his body. It didn’t take long for him to get awkward. Of course it didn’t.
He hesitantly patted Lovino’s bare back, internally cringing.
The unimpressed look that the Italian gave him made Gilbert give as much of a grin as he could to save his dignity.
Lovino stared at that stupid grin with an unreadable expression, as always. Before Gilbert could go and try to pin point it as he always did, the body in his arms shifted frantically.
Lovino grabbed the back of Gilbert’s head and pulled it harshly into his face, lips crashing together instantly with more tiny bubbles coming from the movement and both of their mouths.
To say Gilbert’s eyes were wide would be an understatement. To say he gasped and now had water pooling up in his lungs would be unfortunately correct. But, to say he didn’t immediately feel all doubt and whatever pent up, feral, desperate emotions flow away into the water as soon as they combined would be a lie.
Quickly, without a moment to waste, before the cry that his body was giving him to go to the surface before he drowned could interfere, he pumped his fist in the air in celebration and melted into the kiss.
Lovino’s hands wandered across his neck, still clutching as if the water would suddenly grow a strong current and swish them away from each other.
Gilbert knew it! He just knew it! He felt it in his bones, and another certain body part, that Lovino was in fact head over heels in love with him!
To feel how the other tugged him closer even when there was no gaps of space to fill, it made him almost sink to the bottom of the pool.
He wrapped his arms and hands around Lovino’s waist and upper back, getting giddy.
And he could’ve rode that feeling forever. He could’ve stayed in that position in that state of mind forever, if it weren’t for the sound of a loud slam and approaching foot steps.
Gilbert opened his eyes and looked up to make out Alfred looking down at him, as if he was laughing, but now paused. Slowly, the blonde turned his head to whatever was approaching, and immediately froze with a wince.
Then, the voice came. Big and irritated with that British accent that only added to the clear anger.
Their boss.
Which, ironically, was also Alfred’s dad.
“Just what the hell is going on here?” Mr. Kirkland screamed, eyes scanning the area before fixating on Alfred.
“Bro! Nothing! Just doing some work!” Alfred replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
Mr. Kirkland glared at him intensely and scanned the indoor pool area once again, somehow not looking into the pool water where two very guilty and stunned life guards watched.
Gilbert briefly looked down and saw Lovino now trying to hide behind him. He smirked and once again tried to laugh, but was reminded that they were in fact underwater. No laughing underwater.
To be honest, he was impressed that he had been able to stay under this long without passing out. Those life guard classes did pay off!
As their boss and Alfred continued to fight and converse, Gilbert felt urge rise in his throat and chest. He needed air.
Looking over at Lovino once more, he could see it in him as well.
Drowning now? That would be so un awesome, are you kidding?!
“Cut the crap, Alfred! Where are they!?” Mr. Kirkland demanded.
Alfred bit his lip for half a second and rocked on the back of his heels. “I don’t know, dude! Who are we even talking about?!” He tried to ask.
Certainly, that would’ve stalled farther and would’ve convinced Mr. Kirkland to just grumble to himself all the way back to his office, getting over all of the scattered buzz balls on the cement floor and the slightly broken life guard chair.
It certainly would’ve!
If not for the sudden burst of the flat surface of the pool and the heavy gasps of air that ripped out into the air. Gilbert still held Lovino slightly as he dragged them both to the edge of the pool to hold themselves on to regain strength.
He coughed out water and looked around. Lovino did the same, pushing his head towards the ceiling.
Eventually, the coughing and gasping fit calmed down. The second it did, there was a voice being cleared.
Turning his attention, he saw Mr. Kirkland eyeing them with such fury he thought he might explode, or, like, die. Or maybe jump into the pool to drown them himself. One of those.
“You…you think you can just make a mess of things? You think you can just play around together in the pool while risking others lives?” He roared, stomping closer.
“Scheiße,” Gilbert murmured. Okay, fine. Maybe the shame was all from getting caught and not from the actual wrong doing. But, but! Come on! He had just kissed Lovino! Who cares about all of that other stuff?
“Uh…dude, the deepest deep end we have that was left unattended was like 5 feet deep.” Alfred commented, rolling his eyes.
Mr. Kirkland turned to him and crazily waved his arms around in the air in frustration, groaning as he did so. “You fools! You idiots! Why did I ever think it was a good idea to hire you all? Why did I expect better from you three? I can’t believe this…” and the string of anger just carried on and on.
Gilbert tuned out after he heard Lovino start grumbling his own insults under his breath. He turned his head to look behind him where the words came from and saw Lovino presumably hiding behind him with his arms crossed.
When Lovino saw him looking, he quickly turned red and hid even more.
Gilbert licked his lips and snickered. They had a looot of fun ahead of them.
“You know what? Fired! Even you, Alfred! All of you are fired!”
The words rang out like they were said through a microphone, but Gilbert once again, wasn’t exactly listening.
Instead he was focusing on how Lovino’s breath felt on his back. How it tickled and made him snicker even more.
Awesooome.
Getting fired, yeah, not so awesome. But for this outcome between him and the Italian?!
Worth it!
