Nom's breathing picked up as soon as he was left to his own devices, the dragon disguise still attached to his back.
He relaxed a bit as Scott left before his traitorous mind instead began replaying the scene in his head, over and over again.
Soft blonde curls shift with every breath, falling into peridot eyes. Nom's hand twitches with the urge to brush them away.
No no no no no. This can't be right! He's not even into men.
Is he?
Don't think that! He has to like women! He dated that one girl, Patty O'Brian or something in secondary school-
They broke up after two months because she said it felt he was treating her like a sister.
Or- how about.... wait.
Fuck.
No, anyone he had ever looked at had been a guy. At the time, he had just told himself that it was because he admired the way they looked.
And yeah, technically speaking, that was true.
Just in a... more romantic way than he'd initially convinced (gaslit) himself.
A hand settling on his spine, right between the new wings, startled Nom out of his spiral.
He unburied his hands from his hair, picking his head up from his knees enough to meet Katie's eyes.
"You okay?" She asked, poking his back. "You were hyperventilating."
Nom gave a heavy sigh and dropped his head back between his knees.
"I may or may not have just figured out that I'm into guys." He mumbled back.
"You just figured that out?" Katie asked incredulously.
"Shut up, Katie. I'm having a crisis right now." He spat back, no actual heat in his words.
"Sorry." She patted his head, not an ounce of apology in her voice.
A moment of silence, before Katie opened her big mouth again.
"Sooooo.... what made you realize?"
Nom debated just sinking through the floor and into the vacuum beyond, but he figured that would leave Katie all alone.
"...Scott." He huffed after a moment, not bothering to unbury his head.
"What?" Katie called back, although he knew damn well she could hear him.
"Scott." He said again, a little louder.
"I can't hear you! You gotta speak up, Nom."
"Scott! It was Scott, I'm into Scott!" He yelled back, exasperation coloring his tone now as he finally lifted himself into a normal sitting position instead of the doubled over one he had been in earlier.
Katie was grinning at him smugly.
"You're fucking impossible." He scoffed, standing up and starting the walk back to their room.
Katie trotted along happily behind him, moving to grab his arm and cling to it. "Nom's in loooooove~" she cooed, batting her eyelashes up at him.
"Whatever," he scoffed back, shifting one of his wings to make a big black wall between the two of them. "Get in there, twerp." He opened the door to their room and tossed Katie unceremoniously onto the bed.
Katie squealed and giggled, wiggling around in the sheets. "Best day ever! Nom finally realizes he's gay, and he's in love with an alien!"
"What do you mean finally?!" Nom cried indignantly. Katie leveled him with a completely deadpan stare.
"I figured it out during Christmas when I was like 12. You wouldn't stop talking about this new 'friend' you made in class, and how he had the fluffiest hair. I was sure you were secretly dating."
Nom went pink as he remembered the instance she was referring to. He had been 15, completely oblivious to what he realized now had been him falling ass-over-tea-kettle in love with a guy in his chemistry class.
She reached out and grabbed his wrist, dragging him into the bed with her. "Stop moping. Yeah, you're gay. We have to figure out how to set you up with Scott."
He groaned, burying his face in the pillows. "I think the first step is actually being able to understand their language."
"Yeah, but after that, here's what i'm thinking we do-"
