AITA for forcing my coworker to go on a suicide mission to save the world
I will keep this short. I (37F) am in charge of solving a major crisis which will certainly lead to the end of the world. My coworker (34M) is a brilliant scientist who has made important contributions towards discovering a solution. I would say, with confidence, that he is the most knowledgeable about the cause of this crisis and the person I trust most to handle it.
Something happened to the scientists who were supposed to go on a suicide mission to find a solution. I will not elaborate. We needed a replacement. The only logical option was my friend, my coworker; there was no one more qualified. I gave him a choice and three hours to think it through. When he said no, I forced him to join the mission—against his will.
I knew he would say no. For such an accomplished and brilliant scientist, he has always been unable to believe in his own capabilities the way other people (myself included) believed in him. It is that constant underestimation and cowardice that limits him in whatever he does. Giving him a choice and overlooking it may seem like a needless cruelty, but I had foolishly hoped that he would make the ideal decision for all parties. He did not. This is not an attempt to make excuses for what I have done, just an explanation.
He was still my friend after all—perhaps the only person I considered a true friend. I am aware what I did to him was cruel, but I do not regret it. Truthfully, the question I posed is redundant because the answer is obvious. I merely want to know what some think of the situation. I am also under the impression that this subreddit judges both parties—which would refer to myself and my friend—so I would like to find out what people think of him too.
Am I the asshole in the situation? Is my friend the asshole for saying no?

its extremely distasteful to post something like this even as a joke. the conspiracy theory that grace was forced onto the ship is completely baseless. it is so clearly an attempt to discredit dr grace and his work, which is genuinely SO disgusting!!!!
and youre painting stratt to be some evil person, when in all honesty she ISNT. shes not as bad as what yall make her out to be. she had to make tough decisions that seem unethical to us TO SAVE THE WORLD. IT WAS ALL TO SAVE THE WORLD. I DONT KNOW WHY IT'S CONSIDERED TO BE SUCH A HOT TAKE BUT ITS FUCKING TRUE

im not heartless wth, of course i care about the animals. but sacrifices have to be made. and mind you, the petrova taskforce moved as many antarctica animals as they could to zoos and artificial habitats. they tried to save the animals. nuking antarctica was not done out of malicious intent. it was to save all 8 billion of us humans, at the unfortunate cost of SOME animals.

Dr. Grace may be a middle school science teacher, but he also has a doctorate in molecular biology. He is the scientist who examined the components of astrophage, the scientist who discovered how astrophage bred, the Lead Scientist and Second Officer of the Project. Choosing him is a no-brainer.

You're the asshole. Have you considered what he felt? How terrified he must have been? One moment he's on earth and another moment he's in space. A trolley is heading towards 8.3 billion people, yourself included. Your friend included. The world government asks you to fix this. They give you the lever. You try all sorts of fucked up shit to stop it, but it only slows the trolley.
On the other track are three people. The first two are willing to get run over by the trolley for the greater good. The third person is your friend. You personally strapped him to the tracks, because you have to and you trust him.
In the end, it is 1 unwilling person vs the whole world. Do you pull the lever?

You're assuming that it HAD to be Grace. Going by your analogy, Stratt could've strapped someone else to the track—maybe someone ACTUALLY willing to go on the suicide mission? Grace is not the only competent scientist on earth. Are you really a good friend if you condemn your “friend” to death?
