Work Text:

It's impossibly quiet underwater. The water gently envelops your head in a peaceful bubble as the pressure slowly crushes you to death. It's like the moon down here. Dust swirls around you not caring for gravity much, kelp stretches up to the surface and gently sways around you. And it's dark. It's like some sort of perpetual alien dance you found yourself in the middle of.

Wifies sank down and felt his feet hit the seafloor letting free a cloud of dust which danced around him. His hair and clothes danced along with the ocean. Hummer stood in front of him. He was silent. Without the water breathing it was hard to talk. But they didn't need to. Hummer reached out his hand. It said everything. Wifies took a tiny half step toward him. And then another. And another. He took his hand.

One step after another they slowly moved in a circle, every impact of their feet on the gravel floor kicking up tiny explosions of dust. Hummer lead them deeper into the ocean. They swayed among the kelp forests. One step at a time, back and forth.

They danced and the world danced around them. Infinite blue darkness stretched in every direction. Dark shadows of kelp passed as they stepped through them. Great towers watching them from above. The world was painted in long strokes like someone dipped a brush in black and blue paint and dragged it all the way across a canvas. Tiny gravel particles above their heads glistened like stars. Nothing down here was alive except for them. They might as well be in space.

With every second pressure built, pushing them closer together. Hummer’s grip slightly loosened on Wifies’ hand. His head was pulsing, reverberating as if some great being was pounding on the side of a metal can. His lungs were burning. He locked eyes with Hummer and tightened his grip on his hand. As the last bubbles of air escaped their lungs Wifies felt his grip slip. He smiled. If he was crying he had no way of knowing.

The world crashed down around them. Millions of tons of water collapsed in on them. Hummer was slipping away from him. Wifies clung to him desperately. The inevitability of everything was crushing them to death. The pain sharpened into a point and pierced through his chest. They stood unmoving like dancers after a performance even after the curtains fell for the very last time, after all the lights went out and they were plunged into darkness, even as every audience member left, they stood. He let the water in.

Hummer was slipping away. It was like he was fading from existence. Their faces were inches away from each other. Hair strands danced around their heads. Before Wifies knew what he was doing he leaned down and linked his lips with Hummer's. He had no air to give. Nothing was going to save them. He let his eyes close. He could die like this, he didn't care anymore.

They kissed for hours or maybe seconds, the ocean didn't change in any meaningful way around them other than gently rocking them as if it was singing them a lullaby to sleep. When Wifies finally opened his eyes he was alone. He was alive. He was breathing. He felt as if he had just woken up from a dream. His lungs didn't burn. In fact he couldn't feel much of anything. He was numb. He was alone.
