Opinion - How the Glowstone Path Aims for Longevity
So I'm sure the lot of you have seen the videos by now, but our Olruggio's procession debut was a hit. I think it's a relief to most, since it confirms he wasn't "bumming around" in the years he chose to opt out of the procession. Typically, a witch's breakout contraption is a flamboyant, complicated piece of spellwork. Spectacle is the essence of the procession, because spectacle seizes attention unlike anything else, and a memorable spell is a purchased spell.
There's no doubt that Olruggio's presentation was immaculate - I'm still unsure how he swapped out the dull tiles beneath everyone's feet for his own - but in the aftermath of his showing, a small yet vocal sect of witches criticized the spell for being "lackluster," especially as a return from his unexplained hiatus.
This is where I think Olruggio's tact shines through. The spell's already been purchased by King Deanreldy and several of Zozah's regional rulers. Construction dates are being negotiated. The aristocracy have already commissioned him to redo their sprawling estates with those same tiles, emblazoned with their family seals. A spell's impression during the festivities is only temporary. Olruggio's not concerned with contraptions that show off complicated spellwork, because that is not what well-to-do Outsiders are searching for. They want a tool. They want the convenience of magic.
Whether or not you think the Glowstone Path is worthy of its success, the fact of the matter is that when you step into a city in the next few months, its very foundation will glow with Olruggio's magic - and that spectacle will be permanent.

Revisiting The Tassel Exchange
Figured I ought to make a post for all the new Comets who aren't aware of the history - though it's wholly likely that you've heard it referenced ad nauseam by other witches. It was one of the most active days on this site, second to the flood of inspo boards that formed after a certain Miss Adina Arklaum's wedding. We did cover the initial tassel exchange in this entry, which you can find in our pinned masterpost, but the link has proven faulty for many, so we decided to revamp the whole post.
Most tassel exchanges are public displays, meant to be observed by at least a handful of onlookers. While some witches may choose to have them done privately, it's usually for the sake of seeking out the intimacy a secluded experience would grant. Secrecy, as you've likely guessed, would defeat the purpose. Some of the most infamous tassel exchanges include Aren & Greselda, Adina & Frederik, and Kawal & Dulietta, the latter of which is best known for having their tassels change colors when they are within each other's vicinities.
Another thing to note is that most tassel exchanges tend to happen post-fourth exam, representing a greater commitment. Because of this, parties involved in exchanges are typically above the age of eighteen. The youngest documented exchange involves twelve-year-old Karamilla (Kara) Diesel, but this is part of the Loden-Diesel Affair, wherein Kara Diesel, without her master's knowledge, swapped their tassels; when asked why she had done it, she admitted to a friend that 'That's what witches who love each other do.' It was the inciting incident to a historical master-apprentice abuse case, and thus will obviously not be included in this lineup.
Olruggio and Qifrey's situation stands out because 1) we know nothing about the time or place where this tassel exchange occurred, and b) because among all the exchanges we've documented on here, this one contains the youngest (consensual) participants, each party fourteen years old. Olruggio's black ribbon was traded for Qifrey's golden tassel. Over the years, additional details have arisen:

When asked about how the context of the exchange during the fourth-test graduation ceremony, Olruggio responded that it had happened shortly after Qifrey attempted the Tower of Tomes. He was deeply inebriated at the time, but this account was corroborated by several others.

Alaira, the only mutual friend of both witches, commented that after returning from their venture both boys were rather sullen.

Reflecting upon his apprentice's return from the tower, the Wise in Teachings informed us that he hadn't been surprised at the new ornament at all: "I had a delicate decision laid before me - to tease, or not to tease? I chose the latter and spared him."

Lila Roenton, aged fourteen, attempted what she later called a "harmless prank" on Qifrey - she snuck behind him and yanked at his tassel, pulling his cap off in the process. The two ended up in a physical altercation.

Olruggio of the Torch is renowned for his persisting - and to many, frustrating - bachelorhood. Letters left unread, private invitations declined, and the occasional jilted proposal: similar stories trail behind him in a train of heartbreak. It's unusual to remain unmarried at his age, and it isn't as though he's lacking in prospects. Even Outsiders, well aware of the boundaries that lay between Knowing and Unknowing, have thrown their hats into the ring, the most notorious example being that of Lady Penelope of Ezrest, who commissioned him for a magical loom and inflicted minute amounts of damage each night so that it stayed in subpar condition, forcing him to stay to repair it and giving her additional time to coax him into marriage.

Due to this reluctance, many fans speculate that he's entered a partnership with Qifrey. Neither witch has confirmed this. Neither witch has denied it, either.

Last year, Olruggio went on a public hiatus. Fans pointed out that it was around this time that Qifrey made an abrupt departure from the Great Hall. In light of Olruggio's recent Silver Eve debut, the two have made several public appearances together, suggesting that perhaps the distance was in fact a separation, and that their current status is a reconciled one.

the reblogs on this are really interesting because fans of olruggio will acknowledge his genius, his talent, and his hard work, but never his autonomy. they refuse to admit he has full control over who he chooses to keep around him, so they use passive language to refer to his friendship with Beldaruit's ward/Beldaruit's charge/the Outsider. They act like his interactions with Qifrey are things that are happening to him, rather than things he's partaking in. They fervently obsess over the tassel exchange because they want to deny any possible romantic intent, perversely painting themselves as white knights dutifully protecting their prince's dignity. Olruggio is smart, yes, absolutely, but on the subject of his personal relationships, it may be up to us fans to steer him right, no, we aren't calling him stupid, and no, we aren't saying we know what's best for him, and yes, we do think he's quite capable, just not without our input!

my injured wrist isnt healing right
a while ago i posted about breaking my wrist and the doctor in town told me that my broken wrist would heal ok. its been two months and i cant write straiht anymore, my lines are all wobbly, and my hand is always shaking. we went bback to the doctor and they said they mght try therapy, but the sessions cost too much. my masters already tired of me because i had to pause my lessbns right before the second test and he had to push back my test date even though i was suppsed to take it with the other apprentices my age. yesterday i overheard him saying that he wants to send me to the hall because the doctors there are better. what can i do to make my wrist heal faster without the therapy?

First of all, darling, I'm so sorry you've been going through this alone. It seems that neither your atelier-mates nor your master have been attentive towards your frustrations. It's not easy adjusting to new patterns. I won't tell you the feeling will ever go away, but at least in your case, there are actions you can take to seize control of your life again. A moderator here made a folder of exercises for anyone suffering wrist sprains/fractures that I think would be helpful for you.

Sorry about the wrist. Saw that someone else gave you a resource, but I'd be careful about when you practice the exercises. Some Eyes are so bored they'll report anything. And if all else fails and he lets you go, try to get yourself an older master. They've got a higher stipend than younger teachers, and tend to have more patience for slower students.

Olruggio's glowstone path
I didn't really know Olruggio that well until his Silver Eve debut. I know he's famous in the Hall, but I live in Erinwell - one of the seaside towns west of Ezrest. It's the kind of place people describe as sleepy. There might be only a handful of witches here, and they work the lighthouses and spell the boats and whatnot. The only thing I knew about the guy was that he also came from a small town (Ghodrey) and that he was an inventor.
Recently, that glowstone path of his was installed in our streets. As you all know, the reason I moved to Erinwell is because the spellwork they need maintained consists of large glyphs, stitched into their sails or carved into their boats. My eye ailment (they call it farsightedness, which is an odd word for it, because I can see pretty far alright. Unknowings are strange) means I've always preferred that kind of work.
This evening I stepped out to walk to the pier. I don't know how to describe it; I've never been a wordsmith, but every step I took, the tiles went golden. And some of the tiles glowed on their own, lighting the way to different shops. I couldn't see my fingers in front of my face, but those blurry smudges of light were unmistakable. I thought it was just some pretty thing that the kids would like - I saw a few of them jumping on them to activate the spells (when they were chastised they said they couldn't break a spell, I found that a little funny) - but it's become a guiding hand of sorts.
I can't help but wonder if Olruggio made it just for that purpose. It's got a lot of uses, sure, but the Hall was always dark and dreary. I was always bumping into things. Or maybe I'm just looking into it, and seeing its chief use as the one most beneficial to me. No one makes these things with us in mind, but it's a nice thought.

A good friend of mine lives in the apartments above that carpenter's workshop and informed me that Olruggio actually hadn't purchased anything, but instead asked where the carpenter sourced his wood from. It's only natural that he's planning on carving out whatever it is he wants, since he usually creates contraption prototypes this way. I can't imagine why he wouldn't just order it from the Hall, though.
