Summary
Fertility is a fickle thing. Eridians, in spite—or maybe because—of their long lifespan, are only fertile for a hundred years or so.
Rocky anticipates this will be his last clutch. He asks Grace for a favor.
“Remind me why, uh, why we can’t throw together a little xenonite box, stick a silicon heating pad and a thermometer in there, and call it a day?”
‹… Can,› Rocky says, hesitantly. He spins around to put the model down, leaving the two xenonite figurines coupled together, presumably in singular ecstasy or whatever. Joined forever. How romantic.
‹But is… not ideal. Many problems put in nut shell: Once cryo-protectant injected and cooling to 40°C complete, even short 4° internal temperature fluctuation kill egg.›

Here’s what actually matters, though: Rocky was stranded at Tau Ceti, alone and afraid, for forty-six years. He chipped away at himself for the greater good until he couldn’t, and it hasn’t escaped Grace’s attention that when Rocky entertains thoughts of the future, they usually orbit around obligation or guilt or fear. Given all of this, now that Grace is in the unique position to make sure his best friend has something to look forward to, to give Rocky even the slightest chance to make up for some of the time he lost and remind him he’s allowed a life—how could he not?

Why would he stop at saying ‘howdy-do’ and solving an extinction-level threat? Friendly handshakes are for amateurs. He’s going pro. He’s going to get such a good grade in first contact, which is normal to want and possible to achieve, or whatever it is his kids used to say.
