31 August
The black stretch top had gone as far as the top of Toni’s chest and stopped. Her arms were still above her head, her face partly covered and the thin straps were twisted around her wrists. Kourtnee stood in front of her holding the lower edge of the top, afraid to pull any harder. Toni said, “Don’t yank it. You’ll rip the straps,” and Kourtnee let go at once, explaining that she had hardly touched it. Olivia stepped forward, gathered the material at Toni’s sides and told her to lower one arm slowly. There was no room to bring the top farther down without pressing it hard against her chest. Olivia looked at the fabric, then at the narrow front panel and said, “It’s not goin’ over. Bring it back up before you hurt yourself.”
Getting out of it took longer than trying to put it on. Toni could not twist freely yet, and she became impatient each time the top caught against her skin. Kourtnee kept apologising whenever her fingers came near Toni’s chest, even though she had not touched anything sore. Olivia guided one of Toni’s arms free and then the other, keeping the fabric lifted away from her body until Toni’s head came through the neck. Toni stood in the changing room wearing the soft white support bra she had travelled into town in, her hair mussed and her face warm from the effort. She looked at the discarded top on the bench and said, “That’s the size I always get.”
Olivia picked it up and held it flat. The front was cut almost as narrowly as the back, with no shaping and very little depth between the armholes. “You can’t just look at the size now. This was tight on you before. It’s never fitting you now.”
“I know they’re bigger, Liv. I’m lookin’ at them.”
“You’re still pickin’ the same tops.”
Toni looked at herself in the mirror. Her pale pink velour hoodie was hanging open beside her, and the white support bra covered more of her than she usually liked, but even in that plain bra the difference was obvious. Her breasts stood much farther forward than they had before Spain. She could still feel their weight when she straightened herself. She was getting used to walking with it, but she had not yet learned to judge clothing by sight. A top that looked ordinary on a hanger could become impossible once it had to cover her chest.
Kourtnee picked up the rejected top and tried stretching it between her hands. “There’s hardly any give in it, Ton. It’d be dead tight even if we got it down.”
“I wanted it tight.”
“It’d be crushin’ you.”
Toni took the top from her and checked the price tag again, as though the amount might explain why it had failed. She had liked the black colour and the glitter edging. Before the operation, she would have worn it with a padded bra and pulled the neckline down until she had the amount of cleavage she wanted. Now there was not enough material to get it into place. Her irritation eased when she looked at the narrow front again. “It hasn’t got enough room, has it?”
“No,” Olivia said. “Put it back.”
Toni laid it firmly on the unwanted pile. “All right. Gimme the red one.”
The red top was a size larger and made from thicker ribbed cotton. It went over Toni’s head without catching, although Olivia still helped her lower it carefully. Toni pulled the hem down, then looked at the mirror. The top fitted closely across her stomach and waist, but there was enough stretch through the front to cover her breasts without flattening them. Its low, rounded neckline sat above the cups of her support bra. The bra itself was too plain for the top, but the shape was there.
Kourtnee had been sitting on the small padded stool. As soon as Toni turned, she got to her feet. “Oh my God, Toni. Look at you.”
Toni looked directly at the mirror. “I am.”
“Turn round a minute. Properly.”
Toni turned sideways, still moving more carefully than she normally would. The ribbed fabric showed the full projection of her chest and then came back in beneath it, making her waist appear smaller. Kourtnee covered her mouth with both hands before lowering them again. Her excitement was not subtle or measured. She looked from Toni to Olivia and back again, saying, “She looks gorgeous. Toni, you look dead gorgeous in that. It’s made for you.”
Olivia stood a little farther back so she could see the whole fit. She checked the shoulders, the front hem and the way the fabric sat beneath Toni’s arms. “That one works. It’s not dragging at the sides, and it comes back in at your waist. Try it without the hoodie.”
Toni removed the hoodie carefully and handed it to Kourtnee. Without the extra layer, the change in her proportions became even clearer. Toni faced the mirror again and placed her hands lightly against her hips. The top produced exactly the look she had imagined before Spain. Her chest dominated the upper half of her body, but the garment did not make the rest of her look larger. She smiled openly and said, “I’m havin’ this.”
Kourtnee remained standing beside her, studying the top with the same delight. “You need it in black as well. And white. You’d look lovely in the white one with your pink trackies.”
“We’re not buyin’ every colour,” Olivia said. She went through the remaining hangers and removed two tops that were constructed in much the same way as the first one. “These won’t fit. This one might. The blue blouse won’t close.”
Toni took the blouse from her. “You haven’t seen it on.”
“I can see the buttons.”
“I’m tryin’ it.”
Olivia did not argue. She helped Toni into the blouse and waited while Toni fastened it from the bottom. It fitted around her waist and sat neatly on her shoulders. The first few buttons closed easily. The next one needed more pressure. When Toni reached the fullest part of her chest, the two sides of the blouse would barely meet. She managed to fasten the button, but the fabric pulled between it and the one above, leaving a visible opening.
Toni pressed the opening shut with her fingers. When she released it, the gap appeared again. “It fits everywhere else.”
“It’s too small across your chest,” Olivia said.
“If I go up again, it’ll be hangin’ off me.”
“Then don’t get it.”
Toni tried adjusting the blouse and drew it down over her waist, but the movement only tightened the front. She could feel the button pulling. There was nothing dramatic about the problem. It was simply a blouse that no longer fitted the proportions of her body. That ordinary fact affected her more than she expected. She looked at the gap again, then at the shape underneath it. Her expression changed from annoyance to satisfaction.
Kourtnee noticed first. “You’re made up about that.”
“I’m not. I liked this blouse.”
“You’re smilin’.”
Toni unfastened the strained button before it could come loose. “It’s just mad, isn’t it? I used to wear this sort all the time.”
Olivia helped her take it off. “You can still wear shirts. They’ll need more room in the front, or you’ll have to wear them open over something fitted.”
Toni nodded as she returned the blouse to its hanger. “I’m not buyin’ one that’s massive everywhere else.”
“I didn’t tell you to.”
“I’m sayin’.”
“I know.”
The bra fitting was quieter. Toni had expected the fitter to look surprised when she explained that she had recently had implants, but the woman only asked how long it had been and what instructions the clinic had given her. She checked that Toni was still wearing non-wired support and explained what she could safely try. Toni listened closely. She had wanted the operation for its appearance, but she took the recovery seriously. She had no intention of causing herself pain or damaging the result because she had been too impatient to wait.
The first bra the fitter brought was white, plain and firm. Toni would never have chosen it from the rail. Its straps were wider than the ones she normally wore, and the cups covered most of her breasts. Once it was properly adjusted, however, it supported their weight much better than the bra she had arrived in. Toni stood in front of the mirror while the fitter checked the band and the cups. When the fitter confirmed that Toni now needed an F cup, Toni looked down at herself and asked, “A proper F, yeah?” The fitter confirmed it without making anything of the question.
Kourtnee gave a small gasp from behind Toni. She had been told the planned size before the trip and had seen Toni since her return, but hearing the fitter say it made her excited again. “A full F. I knew they were, but that sounds massive when she says it.”
“They are massive,” Toni said. She looked pleased rather than boastful. She turned to the side and checked how the bra held her. “That’s what I asked for.”
Olivia came closer to inspect the fit. She did not touch the bra or interfere with the fitter’s work. She looked at Toni’s shoulders and then at the line beneath her chest. “That sits better than the one you came in with. You’re not pullin’ your shoulders forward as much.”
Toni straightened herself. She had been leaning slightly without noticing it. The new weight on her chest was still unfamiliar, and she had begun compensating for it whenever she was tired. With the firmer support, she could hold herself naturally without feeling the same downward pull. She examined the bra again. “It’s not very nice, though.”
“It’s for under your clothes,” Olivia said. “Get one in white and one in black. You’ll use both.”
Kourtnee looked at the white bra from several angles. “It still makes them look good. They’re proper high in it.”
Toni looked again and agreed. The bra was plain, but it did not make her breasts appear smaller. It lifted them and kept them separate without pushing them painfully together. The result under the red ribbed top would be better than the softer bra she was currently wearing. That was enough to make Toni accept it. “I’ll get the black one as well. Have they got a nude one?”
The fitter brought another style with slightly softer fabric and a lower front. Toni tried that one too, then walked several careful steps inside the changing area to feel how it moved with her. She raised her arms only as far as was comfortable. Nothing shifted or pressed against her healing skin. She asked practical questions about washing, fastening and how many hours she could wear it. The fitter answered each one. Kourtnee listened alongside her, while Olivia checked the prices and worked out which two styles would give Toni the most use.
Once the sensible bras had been chosen, the fitter brought a smooth bra intended to make a large chest appear less prominent beneath clothing. Toni looked at its shape before it reached her body and shook her head. “No, I don’t want that.”
“It might help with some of your old tops,” Kourtnee said, not trying to persuade her so much as understanding what it was for.
“I don’t want them lookin’ smaller. I didn’t have them done so I could squash them down.”
Olivia addressed the fitter calmly. “She wants support, but she wants the size showin’. Have you got anything lower at the front for when she’s healed?”
That was the first time during the fitting that Toni looked grateful for someone else speaking on her behalf. Olivia had understood the difference without needing it explained. Toni did not object to broad straps or sensible cups when they served a purpose. She objected to the assumption that the aim should be to reduce the visible effect of her chest. She had spent too much money, endured too much discomfort and wanted the result too deeply to begin hiding it now.
The next group of tops was chosen around the new bras. Olivia selected a white scoop-necked top, a pink wrap top and a fitted black top with a wider square neckline. She ignored several loose tunics that the assistant had suggested. Toni tried the white one first. The fabric was not especially revealing, but it followed the shape of her breasts and narrowed again over her stomach. Kourtnee reacted as soon as Toni opened the curtain. She sat forward, clapped twice and said, “That’s lovely. That’s really lovely on you. Put your hoops back in with it.”
Toni had removed her large silver hoops before changing. Kourtnee passed them over, and Toni put them on while facing the mirror. The earrings and the fitted top brought her usual look back together. The surgery had not made her appear like a different person. It had made the clothes, hair and jewellery she already loved look closer to the version she had always wanted.
Olivia adjusted the top at one shoulder. “The white’s good, but you’ll need the nude bra under it. The black one’ll show through.”
“I know that.”
“You wore a black bra under a white top last month.”
“That was meant to show.”
“Then this can show if you want it to. I’m tellin’ you what works if you don’t.”
Toni looked at the white fabric beneath the bright changing-room light and nodded. Olivia was not trying to tell her what she was allowed to wear. She was giving her the information and leaving the decision with her. Toni checked the price tag, folded it over and placed the top on the buying pile.
The pink wrap top took longer to arrange. Toni initially disliked the tie and said it looked too old for her, but Olivia tightened it properly at the waist and adjusted the front. The neckline opened over Toni’s chest without slipping too low, and the tied waist gave her the exaggerated shape she wanted. Toni studied it without speaking. Kourtnee’s eyes widened, and she stood up again. “Toni, that’s gorgeous. Turn this way. No, stay there. I can see it. You look proper done up in that.”
Toni touched the fabric where it crossed beneath her breasts. It felt secure. “I thought this was gonna look horrible.”
“The hanger doesn’t have your body,” Olivia said. “Look at the fit, not the top on its own.”
Toni turned from side to side. “I’d wear this with my white trousers.”
“Not the thin ones. You can see everything through them.”
“The thicker ones, then.”
Olivia nodded. “The thicker ones’ll look good.”
Kourtnee remained beside the mirror, smiling at Toni’s reflection. Every new top seemed to affect her as much as it affected Toni. She did not try to hide how impressed she was or ration her reactions. When Toni emerged in the square-necked black top, Kourtnee pressed a hand against her own chest and stared. “Oh, Ton. That’s the best one. You look dead glamorous. Your waist looks tiny under them.”
Toni looked directly at the part Kourtnee meant. The black fabric held close beneath her breasts and continued down without riding up. The neckline showed the upper curve of her chest without exposing the support bra. Nothing pulled at the armholes. She lifted both arms gently, then lowered them. The hem stayed where it was.
Olivia checked the back. “That fits properly. Get that one.”
“I was gettin’ it anyway.”
“Good.”
There was no argument because all three of them could see the same thing. Toni had found a top that made the scale of her chest unmistakable without being uncomfortable or badly fitted. She stood before the mirror for another minute, looking at herself from the front and then from the side. The pleasure on her face became quieter, but it did not lessen.
The impractical bra was discovered after they had nearly finished. Kourtnee saw the hot pink satin first and took it from the display before Olivia could check its construction. It had embroidered cups, narrow straps and a small clear stone between the breasts. Kourtnee carried it into the changing area with both hands and said, “They’ve got it in an F. Toni, please try this. Just to see.”
Olivia examined the bra before passing it over. “You can’t wear it yet. It’s wired.”
“I know,” Toni said.
“The straps won’t be any good for all day.”
“I know that.”
“You’re buyin’ the plain ones first.”
“I’ve already picked them.”
Toni tried the pink bra only after the fitter confirmed that she could put it on briefly without wearing it out of the shop. She moved carefully and allowed the fitter to fasten it so she would not have to reach behind herself. The bra was not intended for recovery or ordinary use. It lifted her breasts into a full, rounded shape and left much more of them visible than the sensible bras had. The satin and embroidery suited Toni immediately. She looked at herself and gave a slow smile.
Kourtnee stood close to the mirror, watching Toni’s face as much as the bra. “You love that one.”
“Yeah.”
“You look made up.”
“I am.”
Olivia checked the fit, then looked at the price. “You won’t get much wear out of it for a while.”
“I’ll wear it when I’m allowed.”
“If you get that, leave the blue top. It didn’t fit right anyway, and you’re not spendin’ all your money in here.”
Toni considered the price while still looking at herself. She had brought cash set aside for the fitting and kept her bus fare separately in the zipped pocket of her purse. She was not careless with money, whatever people assumed when they saw the tracksuits, jewellery and surgery. She knew exactly how much she had saved and how long it had taken. After a moment she said, “Put the blue one back. I want this.”
Kourtnee nodded at once. “Get it, Ton. You’re happy in it.”
The fitter helped Toni change back into the soft support bra. Toni held the pink one by its straps before laying it carefully on top of the practical bras. It would remain in a drawer until her chest had healed enough to wear it. She did not mind waiting. Knowing it was there would be enough for now.
At the till, Olivia went through the pile one last time. Toni bought three supportive bras, the red ribbed top, the white scoop-necked top, the fitted black one and the hot pink satin bra. She counted the notes into the assistant’s hand and checked the change before placing it back in her purse. Kourtnee watched each item disappear into the carrier bags and continued talking about how the black top had looked, repeating that Toni’s waist had appeared tiny and that the pink wrap top should be bought another week if it was still available.
Toni tried to carry both bags, but Olivia handed one to Kourtnee. “You’ve done enough for today. Carry the light one.”
Toni started to object, then felt the tiredness across her chest and shoulders and stopped. She took the smaller bag containing the bras while Kourtnee carried the tops. The three of them left the lingerie floor at a slower pace than they had entered it. Saturday shoppers moved around them, and Toni kept one hand near the front of her hoodie whenever anyone came too close.
They sat down for tea before getting the bus home. Kourtnee brought a packet of biscuits to the table and opened it between them. Olivia laid the receipts beside Toni’s purse and checked that every item had been charged correctly. Toni drank half her tea before opening the smaller carrier bag and looking inside. The white, black and nude bras were folded neatly together. A strip of bright pink satin showed beneath them.
Kourtnee leaned across the table. “You still made up?”
Toni nodded. “It’s weird havin’ to think about all this. Straps and what front a top’s got and whether things’ll go over me. I thought I’d just buy bigger tops.”
Olivia folded the receipt and handed it back. “You’d look bigger everywhere if you did that. You need the right shape. You’ll get used to spotting it.”
Toni looked down at her hoodie. It no longer closed comfortably over her chest, but she liked how it fell open around the white vest underneath. “I’m not gettin’ anything that hides them.”
“Then don’t,” Olivia said. “Just get things that fit.”
Kourtnee smiled and reached for another biscuit. “That black top fitted. You looked gorgeous in it.”
Toni looked into the bag again before closing it. The fitting had been more awkward and more ordinary than she had imagined. Some of her old clothes would never sit properly again. She would need stronger bras, different cuts and more care when she dressed. None of it made her regret the operation. The problems belonged to the body she had wanted, and she was pleased to have them.
She put the bag beside her feet, finished her tea and said, “We’ll come back for that pink top next week if I’ve got enough left.”
Olivia told her to check her money first. Kourtnee began working out which bus would take them nearest the other shops without making Toni walk too far. Toni listened to them while resting against the back of the chair, tired from trying things on but satisfied. Under her hoodie, the plain support bra held her new chest securely. Inside the bag, the satin one waited for later.
