The glow from the bedside lamp softly illuminated the bedroom, with clothes scattered across the floor and crumpled sheets that outlined the silhouettes of Asa and Anthony.
Asa was lying on his side facing Anthony, his head resting on his hand. Lazily tracing the curve of Anthony’s shoulder with one hand, he moved up along his neck, then followed the line of his jaw before gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind his lover’s ear. His eyes shining, Asa asked softly, "Do you believe in miracles?"
After a few moments of silence, a tender smile lit up Anthony’s face. Taking Asa’s hand, he gently closed his fingers around his wrist. Gazing deeply into his lover’s eyes, he replied in a slightly hoarse voice, "Before, I didn’t."
Asa blinked, looking puzzled, his eyebrows slightly furrowed, and asked, "Before what?"
Anthony didn’t look away. Instead, he lifted the hand he was still holding and pressed a long kiss to the palm.
The gesture was so full of tenderness and devotion that Asa’s breath caught in his throat.
"Before you," Anthony replied softly, his thumb caressing the back of Asa’s hand. "You are my miracle."
Asa simply looked at him for a moment before shaking his head and replying with a faint, self-deprecating smile.
"I’m the one who should be saying that," Asa retorted. "You turned my clumsy dinner invitation into the most romantic moment of my life. I’d almost stopped believing in it, and you just... you made it all magical."
Anthony chuckled softly, reaching out with his free hand to wrap it around Asa’s neck and pull him closer.
"What about you?" Anthony asked fondly. "Just when I thought I'd ruined our first meeting by walking away from the bookshop without having found the courage to ask you out properly, you ran after me and invited me to dinner in the sweetest way. If that doesn’t make you my miracle, then I don’t know what does."
"Well," said Asa, leaning in until their noses touched and erasing any distance between them, "I suppose we’re each other’s miracle."
They both burst out laughing, fully aware that it was the epitome of clichéd sap.
But they loved each other, so being sappy didn't matter to them.
Anthony propped himself up to meet Asa halfway and they sealed their laughter with a tender kiss that lingered until they had to part to catch their breath, their foreheads touching.
That was their miracle, and it was more than enough on its own.
