Work Text:

Derek took his iron sword out of his inventory. "Tell me why we're fighting again?"

"To build your PvP skills, duh!" Avery replied, equipping his own iron sword, hopping from side to side. "You may know Minecraft inside in out, but you can't fight to save your life."

Derek genuinely didn't know how he managed to agree to practicing with Avery, especially since he'd much rather be learning the coding aspect of Minecraft.

However, since he knew Avery was the opposite, he had decided to do what Avery wanted... reluctantly.

"I'm decent enough at fighting," Derek countered as he analyzed the blocks surrounding Avery, trying to plan out how many seconds it would take for him to get within a good distance and make contact with-

"HEY!" Avery shouted, startling Derek out of his thoughts. "I already know what you're doing over there! Don't overthink this; it's just a game."

As much as Derek wanted to say he didn't considerate as 'just a game', he figured Avery was right, causing him to sigh loudly.

"Okay. Let's get this started, then."

Avery whooped in joy, immediately counting down from ten.

Once he said 'go!', Derek sprinted at the slime, managing to hit him once before he backed away, wanting to avoid getting hit from the Sky Wars self-declared expert.

Avery jumped and lunged in Derek's direction, landing two of his own hits, saying nonsense in the process.

This went on for almost an hour.

They were sitting on the plain biome's grass, animatedly talking about the fifteen fights they just finished doing.

10-5. You could probably guess who won.

"You put up a good fight," Avery assured the knight, giggling as he said so. "Your defense is much better than your offense, I'd say."

Derek let out a soft chuckle. "Thanks," he replied dryly, nudging Avery with his shoulder, who laughed.

It was strange how Derek came to love this overly enthusiastic, rambunctious friend of his, granted how they were so different in multiple ways.

Maybe that's why it felt... nice. No one would want to be in love with themself.

Unless they're narcissistic.

But Derek wasn't, and neither was the guy sitting next to him, who was vibrating with happiness.

"How'd you become a knight if you can't combat properly, Sir Derek?" Avery joked lightly, though he was legitimately a bit curious.

"I'm still a knight in training, Jester Avery," Derek shot back, removing his helmet to breathe in the fresh air properly.

He never took it off around anyone besides Avery, mostly because he felt comfortable enough to.

Avery gave Derek a once-over. "Sometimes I forget you're a honey block, Derek," he admitted, poking the knight's face, his green finger meeting gold stickiness.

Derek grunted and batted the slime's hand away. "I think you're the only person that knows."

He regretted saying that as soon as he saw Avery's face brighten. "Really?! I'm the only person?!" he grinned. "What an honor you've bestowed me with, sire."

Derek couldn't help but let out a chuckle. "You're so dramatic, Avery. Never change."

Avery's grin simmered down into a soft smile. He put his head on Derek's shoulder, and although the armor would've bothered anyone else, it didn't bug him.

"I'll take your insults as words of affirmation," he quipped, watching the blocky sun in the horizon dip further and further.

"Good." Derek said in response, glancing down at Avery.

I love you all the same.
