Chapter Text
“This is the second Mexican stand off I’ve been a part of today.” Shawn chuckled.
“I’m not sure you know the proper meaning of that term. Drop it.” Julian nudged the gun against Shawn’s neck.
Shawn sneered and threw his gun to the side, watching sorely as Jerry’s sick face turned into a smile.
Julian continued, “You’re making things very difficult for me lately. I’m a very busy man.”
“Oh, I know.” Shawn retorted quickly, “You’ve got donors to defraud and wars to worsen and… kittens to drown, all while moving your operations to uh,” He looked at a nearby box, “Angola.” He announced, licking the inside of his lip.
“Yes. I’ve found their government to be a bit friendlier to people in my line of work.”
“Yeah, well, unless you’re leaving in the next hour you’re still totally screwed. I’m betting there’s a team of FBI agents headed here right now.”
Jerry laughed. Shawn nodded confidently, and Julian commented sarcastically, “Really? Did you tip them off?”
Shawn continued, “No, but I know who did.” He knew he’d won. He always won.
“Does he look like… that guy?” Julian turned his head to the left. Shawn braced himself, then turned his own head. Mack, FBI, was tied to a chair in the distance. Shawn looked forward again, heart pounding. “I’m afraid the calvary isn’t coming.”
Shawn’s mouth hung open, and he quickly closed it. “You’re right. I don’t know what a Mexican stand off is.” He shook his head, then he launched his foot behind him to kick Julian in the knee. He turned around and punched Julian in the face, then immediately felt Carp push him in the back, and he fell into the nearest pile of boxes. As soon as Shawn regained his footing, there was another gun in his face, this time held by the man who shot his dad.
“Y’know Shawn, I used to think you were different from your dad, but you’re not; you’re both stubborn, and you’re both stupid, and you don’t know when to quit!”
Shawn’s heart was aching now, but he hadn’t lost hope yet. “I’ll quit,” He took a breath, “When you’re behind bars, or dead. I honestly don’t have a preference at this point, Jerry."
Jerry aimed his weapon, “Goodbye Shawn.”
Shawn gritted his teeth, waiting for the inevitable, but the inevitable never came. Instead, Jerry chucked again. Shawn squinted at him, confused as Jerry continued, “Shawn, now that I think about it, your old man was the best cop I’d ever known, and you? You’re a better, perfectly refined version of him.” He licked his lips, “I could kill you, but you just tried to walk me out of here at gun point. Not only would it make for an excellent revenge plan, but oh how I could use your skills.”
“The police will be here any minute.” Shawn glared at Carp.
“Will they be coming with the FBI you mentioned before?” Jerry backed up a little, still pointing his weapon at Shawn’s face. “Go grab Drake. We’re bringing this on the road.”
As Shawn did what he was told, his mind flickered back to anyone who could know where he was. Lassiter had dropped him off, Gus had met him at the entrance, and Juliet had to have seen the address he was going to when he- before Shawn could finish the thought, he heard another sick chuckle from behind him. Vest.
“I didn’t know you had it in you, Carp. You’ve always been such a low-level player. What does this…” Vest pressed his own gun to Shawn’s jaw, “... child have against you, anyhow?”
“I’m almost 36 years old, jerk.”
“Well, happy birthday. You’re still immature and in way over your head, kid.”
“He has a vendetta for me because I shot his dad.” Jerry answered.
“I can work with that. Did he survive?” Vest asked.
“He’s recovering.”
Vest nodded coldly, leaning down to be eye-level with Shawn, “If you step one foot out of line, he won’t even make it to the ambulance.”
That was it. Shawn dropped Julian and launched himself at Vest. Vest grunted as he hit the ground. Shawn heard Jerry yelling “Shawn! Shawn!” Shawn continued tackling Vest until a gunshot could be heard, and Shawn saw a bullet had pierced the floor a few feet away from him. During his brief distraction, Vest turned over and pinned Shawn’s arms to the ground. Jerry pressed his gun into Shawn’s face, “Are you coming the easy way, or the hard way?”
“The hard way? What even is-” Shawn felt the gun smack his head, and everything went dark.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deja vu is what Shawn felt as soon as he woke up. He was clearly in the trunk of a car, and his mind wandered to his shoulder before the horrifying realization set in that this is the second time he’d been in this situation, and although less painful, it was much more dangerous. Shawn noted that his bullet proof vest was gone, along with his phone, wallet, and shoes. Whoever did this had clearly thought it through, and wasn’t planning to let Shawn get away any time soon.
Shawn’s anger returned as an even worse realization set in: It was Jerry Carp, then man who shot his dad. He was under the mercy of the person he hated the most in this world. Shawn wanted nothing more than to destroy everything in his sight, but nothing was there. He was in the dark.
He reached his hands forward, which thankfully weren’t duct taped like they were last time, and pounded on the door. He tried to use his fingers to pry the door open, but it didn’t budge. Finally, he let out a frustrated scream, and the car screeched to a stop. Shawn’s heart dropped when footsteps approached his prison. The trunk opened and Shawn was immediately met with another gun to his face.
He scanned his environment as Julian, who was also now awake, spoke, “It was really impressive what you did back there, Spencer.”
“I’d do it again. Where are you taking me?” Shawn asked, trying to ignore the ‘why’.
“Well, you were so keenly interested in my business, that-”
“I was interested in arresting Jerry Carp.” Shawn interrupted, “Bringing you down was just something that I happened to do along the way.”
“But you didn’t do it, did you? You failed miserably and now your skills are mine.”
“I don’t have any skills. I’m psychic.”
Julian rolled his eyes, “I saw your business card already. I don’t want to hear another sound out of you until we reach our final destination, is that clear?”
“No.” Shawn gritted his teeth, “I promise that I will use absolutely every opportunity that I have to bring you down. Is that clear enough for you, Jack?”
Julian signaled to the front of the car, and soon Vest came into view, limping and holding a roll of duct tape. Julian spoke, “You had the chance to cooperate. Unfortunately I can’t risk you alerting anyone by screaming or banging on the car, making a ruckus. I’m sure you can understand that, you are a detective after all.”
Shawn scoffed, trying to hold back his pride and beg them not to do it, but he didn’t have it in him. He was too pissed off. Within a minute the trunk was closed, the car was moving, and Shawn was covered in duct tape.
Shawn estimated that it was around 45 minutes before the car was stopped again, and he found himself being dragged out of the trunk. His eyes widened when he saw that he was being carried in the direction of a small airplane. He kicked at Vest, who was holding his feet, and threw his head at Jerry, who was holding his torso. His heart beat faster and faster as he was brought closer to the airplane. The two crooks threw him into a seat and soon he was seat belted in and burying his head against the window. He could feel his blood boiling, and his breath was heavy in his nostrils. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he felt a tap on his shoulder.
“Shawn,” Jerry sat next to him, sporting another sick grin, “I’m sure you’re probably quite worried about whether or not your friends know where you are, but you don’t need to worry about that.” Shawn squinted at him as he continued, “You only have to make sure you cooperate so they stay alive.” Shawn knew he was bluffing. He threw himself forward to headbutt the man, but Jerry blocked the attack and laughed, “Can’t you see you lost?”
Jerry pinched Shawn’s nose, cutting off his air supply. Shawn tried to hold his glare for as long as possible. He couldn’t show weakness in front of Carp. He couldn’t make him think he won. Shawn felt his face getting red and eventually he heard Drake yell, “Enough!” and Jerry let go of his nose. Shawn leaned forward, trying to regain his breath as Jerry turned around to talk to Julian. He noticed Jerry pull out a phone and take a picture of Shawn before he stood up.
Shawn turned his attention back to the window and watched as the ground disappeared.
