Summary
In a not-too-distant future, the world is falling apart after the air has turned unbreathable.
As a last-ditch effort to save it, Wei Ying launches a groundbreaking but premature technology. In doing so, he manages to reverse this atmospheric collapse.
However, he pays with his life.
Lan Wangji never overcomes this loss. Though he finds a reason to keep living, it is mostly a hollow existence.
However, years later he is offered an illicit commodity: a genetic clone. And when he then makes a chance discovery, he starts believing Wei Ying might not be entirely lost - if only he could be provided a body.
Abandoning his morals for the hope of bringing back his lost love, Lan Wangji accepts the offer and lays out a plan./or
