A Contractor of Our Own!

Here at AO3, we've been looking into getting some paid coding help for a few years, to work on projects that are larger or more time-consuming than our volunteers are able to tackle in their spare time, and also just to help with the backlog of work and offer some extra assistance. We had a contractor take on a few small projects last year, but to outsource work on major projects, you need to be able to form longer relationships.

Today we're excited to announce that thanks to user donations, we've been able to contract an experienced programmer for several months' worth of work! \o/ And she isn't just an experienced Ruby developer — she's a Ruby developer who has been working on the Archive since 2008! Since she's familiar with all the nooks and crannies of our infrastructure, it will be easy for her to jump right in on major projects, like the much-needed update to our searching and filtering code. After that, it's onwards to back-end improvements, code cleanup, and other long-awaited projects like site internationalization.

Our new contractor is starting work next week, and we'll have a preview of her work on the searching and filtering code soon! Thanks to all of you for the donations that have been keeping the site running and are now enabling us to make it even better.

site internationalization
I'm not sure what is meant by this, but please - PLEASE - don't make AO3 one of those annoying sites that wants to force me to use it in my native tongue. It's bad enough that all the major sites like google, youtube etc do that. It's even worse that when you go through a multitude of (sometimes very well-hidden) settings to change the sites back to English they always seem to revert back to my native tongue. If you really need you need to do this, for the sake of some fans who might like it that way, please remember to make it easy for the lot of us who have no interest in this feature. I, for one, would be sorely disappointed.

  I didn't even think of this possibility. Ao3 doesn't come across as the kind of site that'd force these things on anyone, so I'm sure we needn't worry, but it's good that this was brought up. I live in Finland but am primarily an English speaker and never use my computers, phones, websites, anything in Finnish and hate it when I get some (often poorly translated) Finnish version of a site or a program forced upon me just because of my geographical location. Although, again, I could never imagine Ao3 ever doing that without an easy opt-out system:)
  Great to hear about the live-in code monkey you've now got, Ao3!:D Here's hoping she can finally sort out the fic summary box formatting/line break glitch; I have always inagined it must be some supernatural dark force beyond ordinary human means of control for not to have been defeated yet.

  This isn't my area, but I suggest you either send an email to Support through the website link on the bottom menu, or if you can't do that, try reporting it as a bug - if I remember rightly you should be able to do the latter, at least, without logging in, if you still can't. Good luck!

Sounds sensible aiming for a few months' hire so not overcomitting, and perfect that the contractor is already familiar with aspects of the website which will save time and expense at the start. Good luck!

I am very happy to hear this. I was unable to donate in the last drive due to the issues with the payment system. By the time it was fixed I no longer had the funds due to personal issues.
AO3 is my favorite site for reading fanfic. It is the first one whose visual layout and tagging system let me be able to explore what is out there. I have some learning issues that make it hard for me to find things on a lot of sites because I do not think that way.
I am a reader only and not much of a television person. This is a resource that helps me keep me sane and able to deal with real life.
You can count on me for financial support in any future drives ( I am assuming the donation issues have been cleared up)
