Sentinel Angst, a The Sentinel fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

The Sentinel Angst Yahoo Group was a Gen-only writers group active from 1999-2019. In order to preserve this piece of fandom history, we are importing the stories written for the group to AO3.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Lady Shelley, Lyn Townsend, and Annie Booker to import Sentinel Angst into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own.

We will begin importing works from Sentinel Angst to the AO3 after October. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on Sentinel Angst?

Because posters in Sentinel Angst were led to expect privacy, individual works will only be imported upon receiving the explicit consent of their respective creators. The moderators have actively sought to contact all creators to gather permission to post. Works for which we do not have explicit consent to import will not be saved to the Sentinel Angst collection on AO3.

For works we do have permission to archive, we will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will invite it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work unless we were asked for the work to be orphaned or anonymized.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose.

Please contact Open Doors with your Sentinel Angst pseud(s) and email address(es) if we haven’t managed to get in touch with you but:

  • You'd like us to import your works and you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  • You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  • You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  • You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3.
  • You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  • You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your Sentinel Angst account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the Sentinel Angst mods to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions...

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of Sentinel Angst on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve Sentinel Angst!

House of Tucker

The House of Tucker, a Star Trek: Enterprise fanworks archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

House of Tucker was a Star Trek: Enterprise fansite dedicated to the character Charles “Trip” Tucker III. The site included five subsites where fanfiction was posted: ¡TRIP!, Trip/T'Polers, Archer*Trip, Trip*Malcolm, and Soval Annex.

Open Doors will be working with mods evay, write_light, Bucky, myst123, wychwood, and wollem to import House of Tucker into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction currently in the House of Tucker archive will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from House of Tucker to the AO3 after July 2024. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on House of Tucker?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

Please contact Open Doors with your House of Tucker pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your House of Tucker account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the House of Tucker mods to confirm your claims.)

Unit B, Twisted Sisterhood, and Oz Magi, a group of HBO's Oz fanfiction archives, are being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

These archives are being imported to the AO3 because of their age. Some content was hosted on Yahoo! Groups, which is now defunct. Other content is hosted using software that is out-of-date and could break at any time, and there's no one to repair it. The Oz Magi gift exchange collection has already moved to AO3, and we will now be importing its earlier works that were posted elsewhere. We want to make sure that this Oz fiction remains accessible to everyone who wants to read it!

Open Doors will be working with Trillingstar to import Unit B (including Cellblock 5), Twisted Sisterhood (including TSXF), and Oz Magi into separate, searchable collections on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archives in their entirety, all fanart and fanvid files currently in the archives will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from these Oz archives to the AO3 after May. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archives. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collections in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on these archives?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will invite it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works in the Unit B and Magi collections will be made visible to all visitors. However, the Twisted Sisterhood works will remain restricted to logged-in AO3 users only. Once the import is complete, we will then permanently close down the Twisted Sisterhood and Unit B sites.

Please contact Open Doors with your Unit B, Twisted Sisterhood (TSXF), and Oz Magi pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archives.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your archive account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the archive mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions...

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of Oz's Unit B, Twisted Sisterhood & TSXF, and Magi on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve these Oz archives!

Banner for PHOENIX archive

PHOENIX: Michael Biehn Archive, a multi-fandom fanworks archive focusing on characters played by the actor Michael Biehn, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

PHOENIX: Michael Biehn Archive has been hosted on an eFiction site, but it became insecure and Tarlan, the moderator, had to restrict access. Tarlan says, “I am moving the archive onto AO3 as it has far better features for uploading, sharing, reading, downloading and searching for works. More importantly, it is being maintained by a bank of volunteers who LOVE fandom in all its many forms and will ensure the stories remain safe, secure and accessible for the foreseeable future.”

As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction and fanart currently in the archive will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages. Eventually links to the old site will redirect to the collection on AO3, which can be searched and filtered in order to locate individual imported works.

We will begin importing works from PHOENIX: Michael Biehn Archive to the AO3 after May. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

Please contact Open Doors with your PHOENIX: Michael Biehn Archive pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.

Spotlight on Open Doors

Open Doors is pleased to announce the completion of 11 archive import projects in 2023, a total of over 10,000 works! We hope that you will find old and new favorites in the collections listed below.

Find works at the Iolanthe_memorial AO3 account.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the A Priest in Korea import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Susan Leinbach and A Priest in Korea Fanlore pages.

Viggorli Secret Santa

Completed: May 2023

Viggorli Secret Santa, an annual Lord of the Rings RPS fanfiction gift exchange focusing on the Viggo Mortensen/Orlando Bloom relationship, has been running on AO3 since 2020. In an effort to consolidate all the older works (2010-2019) from the LiveJournal and Dreamwidth sites, the moderator wanted to move those works across to AO3 as well.

Find works at Viggorli Secret Santa Exchange Collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Viggorli Secret Santa import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Viggorli XMAS Fanlore page.

Find works at the Echoes from the West Collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Echoes from the West import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Echoes from the West Fanlore page.

The ARC

The Library of Moria was founded in 2002, shortly after the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and was one of the first online archives for The Lord of the Rings! The AO3 collection is open and accepts all Tolkien-based slash, gen, and RPS fanfiction.

Spotlight on Open Doors

Last year, the OTW Open Doors Committee announced several changes to its Fan Culture Preservation Project, including the creation of the AO3 Fanzine Scan Hosting Project (FSHP). The FSHP is a partnership with fan-run preservation project Zinedom through which fanfiction and fanart originally published in print fanzines is imported to the Archive of Our Own. Fanworks can be imported to AO3 with the consent of either the creators of the works or the publisher of the fanzine in which the fanworks were published.

Since unveiling the project, Open Doors has been hard at work streamlining its workflows for the FSHP and trialing them on zine fanworks. While Open Doors has not yet begun working with any publishers to import entire fanzines, its FSHP volunteers and import assistants have been busy scanning, transcribing, and importing fanworks whose creators had previously given permission to Zinedom to import them to AO3.

Today, Open Doors is pleased to announce a list of collections that it has created to house fanworks imported through the FSHP. A collection has been created for each fanzine from which one or more fanworks have been imported, but these collections do not contain every work from each of these zines, and many so far only include one work each in cases where Open Doors only has permission to import that particular work. For full transparency, Open Doors plans to continue to announce collections as they are created that may or may not grow with additional fanworks as additional permissions are obtained from more creators in the future.

As of September 2023, Open Doors has created the following collections to represent fanzines from which it has imported works:
