He sees his king when he is just beginning to apprentice.
Kasala has to squint as he looks up to the towering figure, the sunray overpowered by him and him alone. He bows before Deshret reaches him, all lanky limbs and headdress that still hasn’t been fitted yet. It almost falls off while Deshret addresses him, kind enough not to point it out.
(In the past, before the disaster and the end of the civilization in the Great Red Sand, there were some moments of peace. In the past, before the madness brought everything and everyone to heel, there was still some slivers of happiness. In the past, before the whispers and the withering and scales, there was a priest and his god-king.)

He nicked his fingers on patch of thorns and he was sucking on the wound before he noticed a pair of distinct ears not far from where he stood.
A jackal.
There was a jackal perching on a rock, eyes trained on him. It didn’t move, only stared down at him. Al-Haitham knew better than to run or panic, yet still his heart beat faster when it jumped off and strolled towards him. He stepped backwards, inch by inch, but the jackal merely sniffed the air between them before tilting its head.
(Or in other words, Al-Haitham has a friend in a form of a jackal.)

"As much as your assessment would usually be right," Alhaitham replied, "you are entirely wrong in this case." He stepped closer; close enough to place a hand under Cyno's chin, to gently coax him to look up. "Contrary to what you seem to think, I like spending time with you."
