Its persistence is matched only by the Z-Team's stubbornness as they force their dispatcher to join them in activities they think will warm him up.

    But none of it matters if Robert can't learn to believe he'll ever be warm again... or that he deserves the warmth this team brings him.

    “Co-leaders?” Robert echoes back, raising an eyebrow at the lack-for-better-word term. His smile grows when Chase huffs in frustration, old-man dreads a cloud that pollutes his scrunched face.

    “Now you know what the fuck I meant.”

    “Just saying, just saying.”

    “Yeah? Well, you better just put your ass back on that monitor.” Chase snaps. The shift in his tone is palpable pain; an obvious warning that makes Robert straighten in his seat, though he would never admit it. “Laugh at me all you want; this woman has evaded the Z-Team twice, so you need to crack her down today. Every time you let her slip? That’s another opportunity for her to get more dangerous.”

    The unspoken words linger like a draft in the air. Robert hears and feels them all the same; She can kill the team. She can kill you. Don’t be a fool.

    Get up.

    Tony was on the couch, an arm draped lazily around Pepper, both of them half-curled under a blanket. The hum of the movie filled the quiet, peaceful and ordinary—something Peter almost didn’t want to shatter.

    Peter hadn’t meant to make a sound. He’d meant to sneak in quietly, just find Tony, maybe get patched up, maybe just… breathe for a second. But the moment his eyes landed on the familiar shape of Tony on the couch—with Pepper tucked into his side, the flickering light of a movie washing over both of them

    And then the sob slipped out before he could stop it.

    “Mr. Stark?” His voice cracked halfway through the name.

    Tony’s head snapped around immediately, instincts kicking in before his brain caught up. He was on his feet within seconds, eyes widening when he saw Peter standing there—mask clutched in one trembling hand, dripping wet, shivering hard enough that his shoulders visibly shook.

    “Kid?” Tony’s voice was soft, but the alarm underneath it was unmistakable.
