Summary
His parents didn’t help him. Not at all, they’d given him the gun to hurt himself with. Left it in some busted box where they knew he knew it was, without even a flimsy lock on it. His friends idolized him to the point of seeing no flaw in a boy on the brink of death. And his teachers saw him as a delinquent not worth their time.
Asher isn’t any of those, but he’s still one of Mike's failures in his own right.
Mike had no one else to reach out to, he didn’t even like to ask for help, he wanted to be perfect, wanted to act it, at least, but he’d let Asher’s number go to use, had talked to him, had confessed unto him, and Asher failed him then the last he would be failed.

Summary
Jared and Mike have been friends since the first year of high school, and while Jared's pretty sure Mike doesn't see him that way, Mike is the only person Jared could think to call his best friend.
Then, at the end of their second year, after a new boy joins their friend group, Mike is pronounced dead via suicide after a night where Mike and their new friend are left alone and a long weekend of basically no contact. He's admitted he was the last one who talked to him, and the last of their friends to see Mike before his death, but he refuses to say why Mike would've done it, or what happened that day.
And Jared, well, he thinks it's pretty unfair his best friend died and he's hearing about it the same as everyone else.

Summary
Your friend, Mike, something happened to him last night.”
A contempt has grown somewhere in me between the last two times for the ways adults cut words and soften blows. Maybe it’s because I knows what it will be, but I hate the ambiguity of that first sentence, hates how it hides things. Something didn’t just happen to Mike, he shot himself in the head. No matter how other things change, that remains the same every time. And I hate when people call it an accident, or an incident, or an unfortunate passing. It’s a suicide. If Mike lived in discomfort long enough to make his own way out, everyone should be uncomfortable for a couple of minutes while they hear what happened to him if they care enough to ask.
“He’s in the hospital, his parents wanted to know if you were going to come see him.”
I double-take.

Summary
Mike can’t think fast enough to hide how his breath cuts, stutters, panics out in a gasp as his lips parted to take in the cigarette, barely conscious in his actions, focused only on the rough tips of Asher’s fingers over his cracked, dry lips.
They don’t react to him, don’t press inward once his lips part or separate them for him in those couple seconds before he can think to move them, they’re just stagnant, until they’re not, casual, without hesitance, without extra thought, as they always were, as they always would be.
‘I want him to touch me.’
Mike’s not sure what he’s thinking when he allows the thought to leak out from the back of his mind to the forefront, so raw, unfiltered, unhinged, it scares him. It attempting to will his hands, his legs, his lips, his eyes, to say, do something to abide by it, to ask Asher to come back as he pulls away, to not stop or be normal and okay and a guy.
