"You look as though you travel light," Soren told him.
"You're here, Soren," the man replied, "that finally gives me something to travel with."

He thought it, but he didn’t—couldn’t—say it. The words stuck in his throat, like voicing them might choke him.
He wanted to ask. He couldn’t.
Struck by the urge, Ike lifted a hand as if to cup Soren’s cheek.
There was a flash of something fleeting—a child’s scared red eyes, their trembling thin fingers—but it was gone before Ike could so much as blink. A strange sort of numbness settled over him in its place.
He let his hand fall back to his side.
“You’ll be alright?” he said.
“Yes, Ike,” Soren whispered, his voice quiet and dull. “I’ll be perfectly fine.”

Ike never recovers his memories in the Tower of Guidance and leaves on his journey without Soren. Until he remembers, and returns.

The orange light of the late afternoon sun faded as Soren approached the back of the cave. The Noibat colony was stirring, and he could hear the chirping and chattering of the Pokémon above him as he reached out the palm of his hand into the darkness. A moist snout touched Soren's palm, and he felt the warm, moist breath of an exhale blow gently across his face.
“Good afternoon, Noivern.”
The large dragon Pokémon lumbered forward, straightening up to face Soren and made low trilling sound. Soren’s mouth quirked into a slight smile. He could recall when he had first met his second partner Pokémon – at the time, his Noibat could easily fit into his cupped hands, but now, after many years and a spectacular evolution later, Noivern stood almost as tall as the mage did.
Noivern made a deep rumbling sound from his throat, and he nudged Soren’s shoulder with his bright red snout.
“What is it, my friend?”
Noivern snorted and shook out his bode before letting out a soft call.
“You hear footsteps on the mountain pass?”
Noivern nodded, and Soren frowned. They had not received visitors for many years. Hopefully, it would not be trouble.

“You weren’t asking for that before,” Soren mutters darkly.
“-then you have left me only one option, Soren of the Greil Mercenaries,” the man continues as if Soren hadn’t said anything. “I challenge you to back up your words with steel. Meet me at the dueling grounds south of Duke Felrae’s estate in three days, then we shall see who really is in the right on this matter.”
He places his hand back on the hilt of his sword meaningfully. Rolf sucks in a breath. Everyone around them goes quiet. Oscar moves from pinching the bridge of his nose to suddenly alert, ready to step in as soon as Soren says something.
Soren… looks a little surprised, and, to Rolf’s surprise, faintly amused. He’s not smiling, but he has that look on his face where whatever’s happening has crossed the line into truly provoking his temper.
“Very well then, I accept your challenge,” Soren says evenly, in that same tone from before.
