Kinich is careful to take care of himself. He eats well, makes sure to drink water, sleeps seven hours when he can—because if he doesn’t, he’ll get sick. And he knows he’ll get sick because his immune system is that of a failing lightbulb that the owner refuses to fix because it’s good enough. It works. If you tilt it at this exact angle—
He doesn’t want Ajaw shrieking in his ear about leaving their vessel all fucked up, he doesn’t want to collapse in the middle of a commission, or be found by Kachina and be dragged all the way to the stadium, or have Ifa and Mavuika and everyone else breathe down his neck for the next week because they think he’s incapable and helpless.
But that’s exactly what happens. Because of course.
(In other words, Kinich underestimates his ability to take care of himself and ends up paying the price for it.)

For a moment, Kinich hoped it was a harbinger of his mom’s return. Perhaps she found him a brother. But the hope disappeared too quickly - she left not a year ago and the boy was his age if not older. He looked older. Or, better fed at least.
