Time seemed to stop completely as Max took his helmet off, his heart sinking in his chest as the buzzer blared around the stadium, Chemists from Clivesdale surrounding their players with cheers and chants on Clivesdale’s victory. Jason patted Max on the back, it felt like knives shoving his way into his body, cutting deep until they reached his bones, Max shivering in the cold. The world seemed to end, no reason to go on. They had lost, and to Clivesdale of all people!

“I don’t wanna go back out there.” Max rested his head against the wall, closing his eyes. Like he was trying to escape reality. Richie knew the feeling. It was easier to pretend he was somewhere else most of the time.
“You don’t have to. The game isn’t over for another-”
“In general.” Max cut across him. “I meant, just in general. I don’t want to go out there. I don’t want to face–anyone.” It took Richie a long time to figure out what the tremble in Max’s voice was expressing. He was frightened. Richie had his guesses as to what, or who, he was afraid of.
He hesitated. For a long time.
“You could-” He was saying it now. The words were tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them. “You could stay with me and Paul for a while.”

[“You can mess with my hand. I don’t know if that’s the same sort of thing.” He licks his lips, trying not to think about how dry his throat feels.
It takes a moment, but Richie cautiously takes hold of Max’s hand with both of his. He runs his fingers atop Max’s, rubbing them. Worn black nails dig lightly against the top of his hand, before squeezing and running across it. His touch is a gentle sort of pressure, and Max finds his body relaxing as he watches Richie. Said boy is focused, lip between his teeth. He breathes in and out as his fingers move up and down, rubbing or squeezing Max’s own. Air breezes by them gently, the night chill hugging their hands as they occupy the same small space. It’s sort of pretty somehow.
Neither of them speak, and Max wonders if Richie is also afraid of shattering whatever accidental moment they’ve both stumbled into.]

Richie bolted down the corridor to get to the music room. Ruth followed him down, repeatedly insisting that there must be some kind of mistake. Overtaking him, Ruth slammed into the music room door, stumbling forward and tripping over herself when it opened quicker than she expected. She didn't bother pulling herself back up and just laid there instead. Miss Mulberry looked unfazed. She was sitting on her desk with a coffee in hand. Richie stepped over Ruth and Miss Mulberry shushed him before he even spoke.
“No, there are no mistakes on the cast list.” She droned, taking a sip of her coffee. She looked utterly fed up. “I am just as annoyed as you are.”
“Why.” Was all Richie could muster. Ruth groaned from the floor.
“As a detention alternative, apparently. Principal Blim thinks making our lives hell will cure Max of his anger issues.”
“I don't think you're allowed to say that, Miss Mulberry.” Ruth mumbled, her voice muffled by the floor her head was still pressed against.
“Ruth, you know I'm not paid nearly enough to care.”
