It was something Cloud had become used to over the years, Vincent arriving out of the blue on his doorstep and conversely, on occasion, him on Vincent's. It was something he'd come to expect, even.
No, what caught Cloud by surprise, even after all this time, was how his heart never failed to race the moment he knew Vincent was near, how his breath still caught in his throat as he looked into Vincent's crimson and gold eyes, each and every time just as breathtaking as the first. How his chest ached after they would part, heavy with the need to make what they had more.
It was probably selfish of him to think that way, he thought.

Though, it did clear some things up now that Cloud was thinking about it. Why Tifa had been so shocked and Barret remained suspicious. They probably thought it was unbelievable, a woman in SOLDIER. Other Firsts got to be paraded around by the media, but Cloud joined after the war, and her gender made the company quiet on her presence. That’s why nobody recognized her despite Firsts making headlines daily.

Until that moment, Cloud never thought much of it, of him. But, with Vincent a mere few inches from his face, he felt something stir within him. He could see that he had a thick ring of gold around the pupil of his left eye. He noticed the soft slope of his nose, the hard lines of his jaw, the fullness of his lips.
