"That is ridiculously vague."
"It's kind of fun to keep people guessing. I can see why you like it so much." Player twisted the cap shut. "You always say to keep your mind focused on other things to avoid having a meltdown. That's what I'm doing. I'm encouraging pocket dialogue."
Another pause. Carmen's voice has changed when she speaks- before, it was soft, joking. Now it was clipped. "You haven't had a meltdown in years. What's up?"
"Nothing much," he said. "I'm drinking soda, talking to Carmen Sandiego, and there's someone standing behind me. You?"

Summary
Player trusted Carmen. He believed in her. If anyone could make it out of that hostage situation with the detective without a hitch, it would be her.
Even so, he had a gut feeling it was going to go wrong. And go wrong it did, leaving him with an unconscious, horribly injured best friend and an anxiety ridden mind that won't stop giving him the worst possible outcomes.

Carmen is injured and resting, safe with Player right by her side. But the hacker can't get over how upset he is with her former family for everything they've done to her, and decides to take matters into his own hands in the only way he knows how.
Or, the story where Player hacks VILE Academy just to torment the faculty by taking over their screens and speakers to play whatever terrible meme he wants, on repeat.Series

But stuck here with Player until she's healed, she finds she doesn't mind it all that much, not with him right here to keep her company and make jokes she can't laugh at.

Summary
Carmen was raised to be a master super thief, never to be found or noticed, never to be witnessed. Her classmates were trained to dispose of any witnesses, to take any drastic measures needed to complete their missions and make V.I.L.E. more money.
So it honestly wasn't that much of a stretch for Player to come up with the idea that the average person would assume she had ties to the mafia.(Part 3/20 of Carmen/Player "found family" prompts)
