Murphy slips on a patch of ice on a sidewalk in mid October, and drags a girl with warm brown eyes and a blinding smile down with him. He thinks thats probably the end of it, but the universe seems to have other plans. She reappears in his life, and slowly becomes the biggest part of it, and his feelings keep bubbling up, because Emori might just be the best thing that ever happened to him.

If he’s taken aback by the tattoo on her face or the shape of her deformed left hand, he doesn’t show it. Emori will give him credit for not even flinching.
“I actually wanted to introduce myself.” He extends a hand to her. Behind him, Raven and Harper stop their work to stare, and Bellamy closes his book and sits up a little straighter in the armchair. “I’m Murphy.” He seems to catch himself. “John Murphy. I’m opening the bakery down the street.”

“It could have gotten infected,” he tells her while she grips her knee tightly against the pain of the needle on her flesh. “You need to be careful.”
“I don’t care,” she whispers, shifting her eyes away from her brother’s face. “I don’t care.”

You look at the take-out coffee cup he left on the windowsill. When you pick it up, it’s empty. John is written on it in a barista's messy scrawl.
