Summary
Clarke doesn't mean to become (sort of) friends with John Murphy sophomore year, and she definitely doesn't mean to stay friends with him through college, but at that point it just sort of makes sense to be roommates with him. By that point, they're pretty much locked in.

Summary
— “I know everything about you, John Murphy,” she says, as if it’s that simple.
The one where Murphy decides transcendence doesn't sound all that fun anyway.
Or: the one where Spacekru deserved a little more of an ending than that .2s of screentime we got at the very end.

Summary
Certain that Skaikru want as little to do with her as possible, the most Echo can do is put her head down and work hard to keep from being a greater burden than she already is. After all, Echo's never had friends, or family, before, and she reckons that five years in space is unlikely to change all that. Still, Echo's been wrong in the past.

Murphy's never been very into the whole soulmate thing, but, in his defense, it's hard to get that excited about knowing that the person you're supposed to spend the rest of your life with is going to kick you in the balls.

Summary
John Murphy likes to think he's the only one left in his gang with a brain. That's why he objects to their stupid list. He still objects to it when he's ordered (with the threat of being alone again as punishment for refusing) to make Emori Sangeda fall in love with him. He doesn't realize that he's the one who's going to fall.

Summary
"Every morning the maple leaves.
Every morning another chapter where the hero shifts
from one foot to the other. Every morning the same big
and little words all spelling out desire, all spelling out:
You will be alone always and then you will die."After leaving an abusive relationship, Murphy moves into his best friend's house. He's fine, really. Their new roommate comes with more than enough baggage of her own.

Summary
“I’m kinda broke, but if you give me back my wallet I’ll buy you a coffee,” he says. She doesn’t expect that, obviously, because something in that gaze cracks. Surprise is a good look on her, softens something in the set of her mouth. Suggests a smile.
[Or, an AU where Emori isn't quite human, Murphy doesn't quite care, both of their actions aren't quite moral, and they drink too much coffee.]

Summary
Murphy slips on a patch of ice on a sidewalk in mid October, and drags a girl with warm brown eyes and a blinding smile down with him. He thinks thats probably the end of it, but the universe seems to have other plans. She reappears in his life, and slowly becomes the biggest part of it, and his feelings keep bubbling up, because Emori might just be the best thing that ever happened to him.

Summary
Schooling her features, Emori turns. “Can I help you?”
If he’s taken aback by the tattoo on her face or the shape of her deformed left hand, he doesn’t show it. Emori will give him credit for not even flinching.
“I actually wanted to introduce myself.” He extends a hand to her. Behind him, Raven and Harper stop their work to stare, and Bellamy closes his book and sits up a little straighter in the armchair. “I’m Murphy.” He seems to catch himself. “John Murphy. I’m opening the bakery down the street.”

Murphy's been kicked out of his crew. Emori's been alone for a while now. They both have a knack for robbery and dreams bigger than their pasts, and they're willing to steal from anyone and everyone to prove it.

Summary
When she wakes in the middle of the night with a swollen, pus-filled wound from the crescent scar under her eye, Otan groans and swears, punctures it with a semi-clean knife and stitches it crudely, all the while scolding her for letting it get so bad.
“It could have gotten infected,” he tells her while she grips her knee tightly against the pain of the needle on her flesh. “You need to be careful.”
“I don’t care,” she whispers, shifting her eyes away from her brother’s face. “I don’t care.”

Summary
Murphy wasn't planning to go to grad school, but it turns out he's really good at the version of it where all he has to do is get high, write incoherent philosophy papers, and put up with bizarre calls from his adviser at all hours of the night. He even makes some friends.

Summary
Since Murphy wasn't really planning on going to grad school, he also wasn't planning on leaving grad school, or having a career, or really anything about his future.
Unfortunately, time keeps passing anyway, so he's graduating, and he needs to do something else with his life.

Summary
“Get home safe,” he says awkwardly, like an afterthought.
You don’t know what else to say but, “You too.” It sounds too polite leaving your mouth.
He walks away. You see him board the bus outside. When it pulls away, you swear his eyes meet yours from the window.
You look at the take-out coffee cup he left on the windowsill. When you pick it up, it’s empty. John is written on it in a barista's messy scrawl.
Something in you smiles.
