Summary
Jim soon knows that his suspicions about Dimitri's friend were correct when his skin feels clammy and cold, and he can feel his blood pressure dropping drastically. Dimitri is too busy chatting away with Celia to notice at first, but when he catches a glimpse of Jim's current state, he drops the conversation and rushes over to his partner, catching Jim before he falls off the chair.
He vows to get Raphael back someday for this, even if he was the intended target of the other's murder attempt.

Summary
After Jim regains his composure and calms down, he can feel the burning in his throat. He finally looks over and sees the shocked face of his mother, as well as the rest of the guests who had happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and his eyes go as wide as planets.
He utters a hoarse 'I'm sorry' before dashing upstairs to his bedroom, burying himself under the covers and not getting out for anyone or anything for the rest of the night.

"Fuck you," Dimitri snarls, ignoring the pain in his stomach from where the pirate's boot had previously made harsh contact, "you're not keeping Jim! I'll die before I let that happen."
The thief rolls his eyes and scoffs. "Have it your way, then."
Before Dimitri has a chance to grab the vial that could save Jim's life from the infection, Sinbad plucks it from the ground and puts it in his pants pocket. He then gives the fallen man a cold stare. "Don't say I didn't try to help you."

Jim wakes up a few moments later, in pain and not registering where he is or what condition he's currently in. He tries moving his left arm off the console, but every single movement right down to his fingers delivers waves upon waves of blinding, teeth-clenching pain. His eyelids feel so heavy when he tries opening them, but he manages to do so. That's when he sees the shattered windshield, the glass covering the dashboard, and...
"D... Dimitri?!"
The pain increases hundred-fold as he cranes his neck to look over at the driver's side of the car. Immediately after he focuses on his partner, Jim feels the contents of his stomach lurching up his throat.
"Oh, God... no, no..."

Summary
Jim pushes open the door to his and Dimitri's bedroom, which the trail leads into, and the first thing to hit him is the overwhelming smell of copper. It's like he's shoved his nose into a handful of coins. He looks around the room from where he stands in the doorway, not noticing anything out of the ordinary. If there was a burglar that had come in here, then they sucked ass and should probably look for an actual job.
Hell, he thinks, walking a little further into the room, I could do a better job at robbing our place than this amateur.
He goes to the far side of the bed, checking the drawers and nightstand for anything that could have been stolen or misplaced. Still nothing. Then who could...?
Jim's thoughts are interrupted by a groan coming from the other side of the bed, and he rushes over. His heart stops and plunges into his stomach as he takes in the grisly sight in front of him.

Summary
Dimitri stirs awake at the sound of someone gasping for breath. Jim must be having another nightmare, he figures as he turns over in the bed. His eyes adjust to the darkness of the room, and...
He spots blood pooling around Jim's pillow. As he looks up, Dimitri lets out an audible gasp.
In the midst of a night terror, Jim is staring up at the ceiling like a deer in headlights, almost as if he's awake but unaware of what's happening. His fingers rake and rake at his bloodied throat, muscle raw and exposed. The blood trickles ever so slowly down his neck, staining his pajama shirt. The whimpers that he lets out are agonizing to listen to.
If he's lucid dreaming, then this must be a really bad dream.

Summary
Jim's clothes are stained with blood when they get back to the apartment, which is luckily only a couple blocks away from where the stabbing had occurred. He finds himself soon having trouble breathing. As Dimitri lays him down on the couch, not caring if there'll be a blood stain to clean up later, he coughs into his hand...
...and when he pulls it back, he sees that his palm is covered in crimson. Dimitri also notices and prompts Jim to take his shirt off, and that's when they both notice it--the large gash on the left side of Jim's chest. The two stare at each other for a moment in shock before Dimitri rushes over to the phone and dials for an ambulance.

Summary
Dimitri suddenly feels his legs being kicked out from underneath him, and he goes down hard on the wooden floorboards. The rest of the pirates hold him down, and he looks up to see the captain pulling Jim by the arm--rather harshly--out of the cabin. In total Jim fashion, he's cussing the captain out and struggling to get away, though his attempts are feeble. Dimitri cracks a smile at his boyfriend's feistiness, but that smile is cut short and turns into a snarl when the captain shuts him up by slapping him across the face.
"You," Sinbad states, looking at Dimitri as he twists Jim's arm behind his back, taking out a dagger and pressing it against the younger man's throat, "are going to tell me where I can find any valuables worth stealing in Paris."
"Over my dead body!"
"Maybe not yours," Sinbad presses the knife further against Jim's skin, letting a little bit of blood drip out, "but his? More than likely. So spill."

Summary
Jim is certainly not foreign to illnesses. This particular one, however, has him rushing to the bathroom every couple of hours to expel the contents of his stomach, even if he's not eaten anything. Dimitri is worried about him, but doesn't offer his input at first, because he knows how stubborn Jim is when it comes to seeing a doctor.
That doesn't stop him from caring for his boyfriend in any way he can, though.
It's only when the vomiting gets worse, and Jim's spending more and more time hunched over the toilet seat, that Dimitri insists on him going to the doctor and getting this sorted out.

As Jim takes off his shirt, Dimitri steals a glance over at his partner's frame... and is completely taken aback at the sight. He can even say he's horrified at the fact that he can literally count every single one of Jim's ribs and the vertebrae in his spine.
"Jim?"
The younger looks over, and that's when Dimitri sees his severely gaunt face. He walks over and pulls him into his arms, and Jim buries his face in the crook of Dimitri's neck, tears streaming down his cheeks and wetting the older man's shirt.
Dimitri can only think to ask in a whisper, "...Why?"

It's not long before the pain begins to intensify, and Jim just can't take it anymore. He hands Dimitri a nearby butcher's knife, holding his arm, which is slowly starting to turn necrotic.
"Don't even think about it, just do it!"
Dimitri stares, mouth agape, clutching the butcher's knife in one hand. "I... I can't. I can't do that to you, we don't have anything to dull the pain, plus we promised each other-"
"Dimitri," Jim interrupts, "I'm going to be okay. I don't want to turn and then be forced to kill you. Just... do it, please."

Summary
Dimitri's screaming is absolutely heart-wrenching, and if Jim hadn't felt guilty about anything before, this is tearing him up inside.
As Sinbad opens the door and steps out of the cabin, he barrels past him and down the steps, stopping in front of Dimitri, who's chained up. Kneeling down in front of his boyfriend, Jim looks him over for any injuries or bruises, eyes filling with tears.
Dimitri has blood dripping from his mouth, and when he opens it to try and speak, Jim finally lets the tears spill over as he spots the gap in his mouth where his tongue should have been.

Summary
In the middle of telling a story about his mom teaching him how to cook for the very first time, Jim suddenly stops talking mid-sentence, and then, his whole body stiffens up. He lets out a strangled groan and then hits the floor, his body convulsing as his eyes roll back into his head. Dimitri, having experienced this with one of his friends back home, thus knowing what to do, immediately gets Jim on his side in case he throws up. He moves the fallen chair out of the way so Jim doesn't bruise himself, though with a fall like that, he's bound to have a few.
The other patrons at the cafe are too engrossed in their own business to notice the pair, but Cher is on the phone, having dialed 911 as soon as Jim had fallen to the ground. Dimitri's kept a careful eye on the time, and as soon as it passes the five-minute mark, he prays that Jim will be okay.
He has to be okay. Dimitri won't be able to cope if anything happens to him.

Dimitri rushes into the hospital room just as a nurse is exiting, a hurried apology being given to the woman. His breath hitches in his throat when he pulls the curtain open and sees Jim, with a bandage wrapped around his head and another around his right wrist, and a tube down his throat. The steady beeping of the heart monitor beside his bed almost makes Dimitri cry with relief and happiness that he's still alive.
He doesn't leave his boyfriend's side for a second, not even to get his phone, which rings occasionally. He'll have to explain this to his boss later, and hopefully she'll understand. After all, this would be considered a family emergency.
Jim opens his eyes a few days later, and Dimitri gives him a smile, tears almost blurring his vision.
"Hey," he says, voice cracking before he stifles a sob, "you're alive. God, you scared me half to death, I thought I'd lost you for good."

Jim's eyes subconsciously follow the fresh blood dripping from his upper arm down to his forearm and hand, breathing slow and steady instead of quick and harsh. He looks up at the calendar on the wall and sees the date. Oh... that's why the urge to cut has been so strong today.
The bright '07/14' seems to glare back at him. July 14th, the day that his father had left him and his mom for good because he "couldn't handle the responsibility of raising a family", as he'd heard him put it during an argument with Sarah the night before. That was the single worst night of his life, not to mention the afternoon that Leland had boarded a ship and never looked back, not even having the decency to say goodbye to his only son.
It's always today... always today that the cutting gets really bad.
