Summary
Angie stops walking abruptly, her grip loosening on Rantaro’s hand, and he nearly plows her over, just managing to come to a halt himself, jostling Himiko against his back. She whines under her breath and swats at his cheek, and Rantaro laughs.
“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to.” He turns to glance at Himiko out of the corner of his eye, one of his eyebrows raising. “Can you ever forgive me?”
Himiko harrumphs and presses her face back into Rantaro’s hood. Taking that as his answer, Rantaro directs his attention to Angie, who is staring, wide-eyed, at one of the stalls.
After it becomes clear that Angie isn’t going to speak, Rantaro prompts, “What is it, Angie? You see something?”

Summary
Rantaro makes another wild grab for the map, and Miu jerks away from him, taking her hand from his chest and karate chopping at his stomach.
“Jesus, since when do you have such a stick up your ass? I know what I’m doing!” Miu huffs, ducking under Rantaro’s hand. As though to evade him, she breaks into a run and begins tearing down the trail, which is inadvisable at best given that the path is filled with roots and plants to trip on, but Miu wears five-inch platform boots most days, so maybe she’s got it handled. That doesn’t make it any less annoying that Rantaro now has to give chase, though.
He groans, tightens his backpack straps, and runs after her. “Miu, come on! Just give me the map!”
Miu glances back at him just long enough to flip him the bird, which is really mature of her.

Summary
Rantaro catches a glimpse of his face in the mirror. It’s a face that Rantaro has a hard time imagining Kaito loving. His eyes are bloodshot and ringed with purple bags, his hair messy and out of place, and he furrows his brow so often there are permanent scowl lines around his eyes from years of searching for his family. By all means, he doesn’t seem like someone capable of making himself happy; much less somebody else.
But Kaito is here, and singing American jazz in the kitchen at the top of his lungs, and Rantaro certainly isn’t about to complain.
He flicks off the bathroom light and dumps the towel before he enters the kitchen, peering around with a smile. Kaito’s got a streak of flour across his jaw already, the goofiest of smiles on his face as he belts the bridge to LOVE by Frank Sinatra and whisks the waffle batter, and Rantaro’s heart squeezes and pulses with affection. He doesn’t say anything, not wanting to interrupt Kaito’s song, but he does walk over to brush the flour off his face, rubbing it on his shirt and leaning against the counter next to him.

Summary
Regardless, from the sadness in Akamatsu’s face, Amami is starting to think that his chosen conversational topic was a poor one. He brings his tea up to his lips to stall for time as he contemplates others; it scalds his tongue.
Akamatsu beats him to the punch: “I’m… scared, Amami-kun. What if it doesn’t work?”
Amami doesn’t know what it is—presumably whatever plan she and Saihara have been sneaking around and developing since they came here, but asking her to elaborate probably wouldn’t be wise, especially in a place where the mastermind could potentially overhear them. Still, it’s a valid concern. What if her plan doesn’t work? What if Amami’s doesn’t work? Do they just… die?
(Or even worse, do they play?)

Summary
Amami bends over with a hiss, wincing as he reaches down to return the device to his pocket, and then painfully drags himself back upright.
He has nothing left to do other than to just keep walking. Calling an Uber is out of the question when he’s so incoherent that he can’t even unlock his phone, and his hotel is miles away from here. All he really has to go off of is the faint recollection of one of Ikusaba’s safe houses being in this area, and… well, he’s not even sure she’s in this part of town right now, much less that he has the right location, so… this might be the end of the road for Amami.
The thought sends a rush of cold through him. Amami had begun inching his way along the wall, fingers dragging against the rough brick, but now he stops with a shudder. He tries to push back the thought, if for no other reason than to get through this without meaningless distractions, but now that it’s arrived, it’s… impossible to get rid of.

Summary
It’s obvious that Amami is in pain, but Ouma can’t see any visible injuries, can’t tell if this whole… thing, here, is just Amami trying to heal himself, or… something else. Still, seeing people hurting is uncomfortable and nauseating, and seeing Amami especially hurting is doing funny things to Ouma’s gut that he doesn’t particularly want to read into, so before Ouma can think better of it he’s dropping to his knees on the dusty floor and reaching out for Amami’s shaking hands.
The second their fingers brush, Amami jerks away, back straightening and hitting the wall, yanking his hands back from Ouma as though burnt. He lets out a strangled gasp, eyes flying open, but when they make contact with Ouma’s, Ouma sees that his pupils are dilated and out of focus, a bead of sweat dripping down from his hairline.

Summary
Saihara’s hands are hidden behind his back. He must be holding something, but Amami can’t really tell from where he’s standing. It’s hardly the first on Amami’s list of priorities, though. The silence has stretched on for far too long, the two of them having been standing here taking one another in for at least a few minutes, and it’s startling to become stifling.
“Saihara-kun,” Amami manages. His voice is hoarse with shock and disuse. He clears his throat. “This is—uh—it’s been a while. Did you need something?”
“Not really,” Saihara shakes his head. His voice is lower too, just a smidge, enough to raise Amami’s eyebrows with incredulity. They were both over eighteen when they knew each other. He would’ve been past puberty by then. Perhaps he was just an incredibly late bloomer. “I just wanted to stop by because… ah, well…” He trails off, suddenly looking a bit anxious. “Happy birthday.”
