“Luke is a child of Hermes,” I cried, my voice raw and hoarse. “Demigod or not—he’s yours. Hermes, if you loved me, you’d believe me. If you loved me, you’d give me a chance to prove it.” I sobbed, my tears falling on Luke’s tiny face as I cradled him against my chest, praying Hermes would listen.
Hermes raised his hand to strike me, and I flinched, tears streaking down my cheeks. But at the last moment, he stopped himself and stepped back, his chest heaving.
