The time was 8:15 AM.
Their meeting with Caterina in the Diamond Suite was scheduled for 8:30. As was his habit, Viago was always fifteen minutes early to every meeting.
Thanks to Aydenne’s inability to be anywhere on time, they were still not in the Diamond reception salon. With every passing second, Viago’s reputation dwindled.
“Straighten your tie,” Viago ordered. “Caterina will not be pleased if you look sloppy. And gather your laptop. We’re inexcusably late.”
Aydenne tugged ineffectively at his tie. He had been instructed to dress business casual for this meeting with the top brass at A.N.T.I.V.A.

He had just suppressed his third sigh in five minutes when club music echoed down the hall. Viago immediately leaned forward, his annoyance palpable.
Who the hell (else) was still in the office at almost six?
The sound resolved into a song, with someone singing loudly and unabashedly:
"Tonight, I want all of you
Tonight, give me everything
Tonight, for all we know
We might not get tomorrow
Let’s do it tonight!"
Viago’s scowl deepened in perfect synchrony with the approaching music.
A knock on the window. Then, the culprit in the doorway.
Aydenne did a triple take.

Viago wasn't one for post-lunch peregrinations,
but Teia occasionally pried him away from his desk for a sanctioned twenty-minute morale outing. She pitched it to him this way: it was good for the team to witness leadership visibly away from their desks, displaying an air of sanctioned leisure. Viago no longer argued (he’d learned the hazards of outright refusing Teia), but he grumbled about the productivity hemorrhage while she finessed the office espresso machine, an appliance he regarded with deep suspicion.

Viago allowed himself to be led, suitcase in tow, plans in ruins. He didn’t speak, but he was already calculating how long he could endure sunlight before faking a work emergency and retreating indoors.
In front of them, Aydenne whispered to Illario, “Has he ever acted normal?”
Illario grinned. “Not since he fell in love.”
Viago didn’t turn around. But he did walk faster.
