Description:

Ponyboy surprises his gang by coming back with the new name of Shane Madej. He doesn't explain where the name came from—just that "Ponyboy" felt like a kid’s name, a memory of a boy who died in a church fire, and "Shane" felt like someone who could actually survive the West Side. He stands there in the doorway of the Curtis house, taller somehow, with a sharp, inquisitive look in his eyes that's a far cry from the dreamy kid who used to recite Robert Frost. Soda is the first to break the silence, a lopsided grin tugging at his lips even as he looks like he’s seeing a ghost. Darry just stares, his hand frozen on the back of the armchair, trying to reconcile this lanky, fast-talking stranger with the brother he’s spent his whole life protecting. "Shane Madej, huh?" Two-Bit finally pipes up, leaning back with a whistle. "Sounds like a guy who’s got a lot of opinions on ghosts and not enough sense to be scared of 'em."
Shane—Pony, whatever he is now—just shrugs, a dry, snarky smile playing on his face. He looks at the gang, really looks at them, and for the first time, he doesn't look like he's waiting for permission to exist. He’s done with the poetry. He’s ready for the hunt.
