Summary
“Don’t let her hear you say that. I don’t pity her. I’ve never pitied her in a million years.”
“But you threw her the bread.”
“I threw her the bread because I hate watching people starve, Gale. It had nothing to do with pity. I don’t think of myself as being so high-and-mighty. I’m just a person, and I don’t want people to go hungry, especially not the people I love.”
Gale’s face twists, and Peeta doesn’t know exactly which pain is causing it. “Still sounds a hell of a lot like pity to me.”

Summary
Haymitch laughs that same grating, irritating, dry laugh he laughs whenever Katniss is being difficult, which is apparently always. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say pregnancy is making you loonier than usual.”
Katniss is silent. Her cheeks burn. Haymitch is quiet for a few seconds before he seems to realize something.
“Wait,” he says, voice far too sober for someone as drunk as he is, “you’re not actually…”
“I…don’t know,” Katniss admits, feeling as though she has to shove the words out of her mouth. It should feel like a weight off her shoulders, but it doesn’t. It feels like yet another burden she must carry, another rock strapped across her back while the carrot of Peeta’s life is dangling in front of her. Peeta’s life, her mother and Prim, Hazelle and Gale and even Haymitch, and now, the potential for Peeta’s child.

Summary
Johanna sticks her tongue out at Katniss. She’s feeling childish and maybe a little jealous tonight, and wants to poke at all of Katniss’s many, many soft spots. “Come on, Katniss. Even if you weren’t actually pregnant, I’ve gotta know, did you ever actually do anything with loverboy?”
“Don’t call him that!” Katniss snaps, and throws her shirt at Johanna in anger. “It’s not your business. Now leave me alone.”
“So you did sleep with him,” Johanna says, tossing the shirt back at Katniss. “Was it any good?”
“I didn’t say-”
“You didn’t have to,” Johanna cuts Katniss off, “your face turns the exact color of cherry wood when you’re embarrassed, and you only get that embarrassed when people talk about sex.”
“I hate you.”
“Yeah, I know,” Johanna smiles as Katniss angrily puts on her pajamas. “But you still didn’t answer my question. I know ‘officially’ you had a miscarriage, but did you really?”

Summary
Haymitch laughs again. “You’re funny, you know that, Effie? All these years, all these years we’ve known each other, and it’s just now that I’m finding out you have a sense of humor.”
Effie huffs, but she doesn’t actually seem all that angry. “Well, Haymitch, I’m a person. Of course I have a sense of humor.”
“Thought your corset had squeezed it all out of you.”
“Katniss probably thought the same.”
That draws another laugh out of Haymitch, and then his head throbs, and he groans. “Katniss thinks a lot of things. Most of them are stupid.”
Effie laughs, her real laugh, not the fake, affected, girlish Capitol titter she would use in front of important people, but the low-pitched, thumpy, somewhat guilty laugh that Haymitch so rarely got to see. It’s pretty the same way Effie is without all her makeup and accessories, womanly and warm, and there’s a not-small part of Haymitch that wishes he’d get to see it more.
“Well, our little songbird is good at many things. Critical thinking, even I must admit, is often not one of them.”
