And of course Pluto now had to face another terrifying version of Ada- except so much worse. He wasn’t trapped inside his own mind reliving his worst nightmares now. They had come out to greet him.
And maybe that wouldn’t be so scary if Pluto had any clue what was going on, but he didn’t, and seeing his dad show up was not helping with his jumbled-up brain.

“Heh. Ha!” Montresor sent a sharp laugh ringing through the air and took another step towards Pluto, making the him curse the height difference between him and the taller man as Montresor leaned down close to his face.
“Don’t worry, runt. I’m brave, but I ain’t stupid. That’s why I figured-” Montresor grinned even wider. “-I can hurt Duke more than I ever could if I hurt you.”OR

Pluto wasn’t stupid. He might only have one working eye, sure, but he could see out of it just fine, and he made up for that by paying extra attention to his surroundings, anyways.
So Pluto could definitely see that there was something going on between Duke and Eulalie.
It was hard to miss, really.
The hand-holding, sitting beside each other in classes and meals and practically being glued at the hip anywhere else- it was so obvious.
