Instead of being forced to work food service, zim is stuck doing sex..., well, its not sex work when you aren't getting paid and don't want to be there, but uh, the empire thinks its a fitting punishment for zim, so this is where he's staying... for now.
Dib is a space traveler wandering the galaxy who stops on a planet reserved for shady, less than legal things, when he comes across a short buglike alien looking worse for wear in his job (he's here out of curiosity, not interest, he swears), things happen and shit gets complicated.

Zim has been stuck on foodcourtia for years ( zim never managed to escape foodcourtia the first time, he never got to join operation impending doom 2) and its really taken its toll on him mentally, he's not doing well, he lost his purpose and food service has broken down his sense of purpose and his normally confident self assured personality. Dib, now a space traveler, has decided to stop at foodcourtia for lunch, dib isnt doing well either, he's been wandering the galaxy aimlessly, he doesn't know what to do with himself, he decided he was done with earth awhile ago, but it turns out space isn't what he thought it would be either. Not that space isn't amazing but, hes kinda lonely.

dib's life is really starting to take a toll on him, he's developed depression and is looking for things to help him cope, and starts developing some bad habits (like smoking), zim figures it out with the help of his computer, and now must figure out how to help dib before he gets even worse, and does something he might regret.

As more fruitless attempts become more common and the disdain toward him becomes more apparent, Dib stops trying to pursue Zim and gives up on all of his conspiracies. Over the years he slowly caves into himself, an utter husk of who he was, with a saxophone in hand. Until Zim decides to join him in college and play trumpet. Admittingly things get interesting.

Zim at birth is seen as a complete defect due to his grotesque external appearance and is set to be terminated quickly. Once The Almighty Tallest hears of this embarrassment of science they arrange to see him at once. Things just don't always happen the way you think they will, will they? Honestly, in the end, maybe death would have been less cruel after all. The grass is always greener until your feet break up its roots.
