Summary
Arthur Morgan did not intend to survive when he gave his hat to John Marston and stayed behind to gain his redemption. As he crawled towards his final resting place, he never intended to wake up again.
But he does wake up. Thanks to time travelers Francis Sinclair and Charles Smith, Arthur's life has been saved by a Saint Denis hospital in the year 2021. The two men were under orders from a mysterious figure known only as The Traveler to save Arthur, as a reward for turning his life around. While Arthur's tuberculosis is on the mend, he finds he has unfortunately developed a nasty case of PTSD from his brush with death. To cope, he goes to live on a Big Valley cattle ranch owned by Jackson and Victoria Linton, two of Mary Linton's descendants. The siblings quickly become Arthur's new family, though Arthur is especially taken with Victoria. At the same time, Arthur is haunted by memories of his past life, from 1883 to 1899.
Navigating the strangeness of waking up in a different century soon takes a spot on the back burner when a ghost from the past begins to threaten the ranch. Arthur must prove whether he really is a redeemed man as he faces a choice between his old life and the new home he has made in 2021.

He looked lost.
Lost-wasn't something Dutch was used to. It wasn't as easily soothed as a pat on the shoulder or a squeeze around the middle. He figured the kid wasn't one to know much about what comfort was, anyhow.
He stood without a word, felt the kid's eyes following him all the way to where the body still hang on display. Words were whispered to a guard and then, that hat was held delicately in his hands like it was some trophy.
"I don't know much about fatherhood," he said, leaning down to be eye-level with the boy. "My daddy died when I was too young to really get it."
Dutch stood again, propping the hat up on the edge of an empty hitching post. He looked back at the boy, revolver in hand. "But I know enough to know that whatever he was, wasn't it." He pressed the gun carefully into the kid's hands. Guided his thumb to cock it back, wrap his finger around the trigger.
"Whaddya say we give him the sendoff he deserves?"

When Arthur saw Canebreak Manor out in Bluewater Marsh, sticking out of the mud on stilts with a wisp of smoke rising from the chimney, he almost turned around and went home. He didn’t care about the supposedly albino boar pelt or the money it might fetch. It didn’t matter if Dutch looked at him disappointed when he rode into camp without a donation for the box, or if Hosea started asking questions all concerned when he showed up after a day and not the usual week.
He didn’t want to see who was pretending to be Annabelle.

With no one to turn to, he ventures into the wilderness by himself with only a few belongings, the clothes on his back, and very limited knowledge of how to survive. Then, when all seems lost, he's taken in by a pair of charitable bandits with silver tongues, sharp wits, and big dreams of taking down civilized society to bring America back to a purer state. Along the way, they find more wayward souls, building up a strong group that's the closest thing to family most of them will ever have.
A fairly canon-compliant interpretation of The Van der Linde Gang, mostly from Arthur's point of view, 1878-1899.
