Summary
Mabel Tanaka is moving on with her life, having recently graduated from college and begun working for Dr. Sam and her team, making a future for herself in the human world.
So why doesn’t it feel like enough?
The connection she lost during the Hoppers project isn’t gone, just out of reach. She still visits George in the grove on a regular basis, but it isn’t the same. The longing to reclaim that connection sparks a drive to take it back, and once she learns that the animals that she has come to care about so deeply are in danger again, she decides to break the rules to make it happen.
The more pushback she gets from the powers that be in the human world, and the more good she manages to do while hopping as a beaver once more, the more the animal world feels like home…and the easier it becomes to justify going further than she ever should to protect it.
Because, if she feels like she’s making more of a difference, making more genuine connections, and feeling more like herself when she’s a beaver…why go back to the human world at all?

Summary
Two years after Voldemort’s victory at the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy escapes captivity at the hands of the Walpurgis Party (the Death Eaters), having been tortured, experimented on, stripped of his magic, and left for dead. Author’s Note:
Chronologically, this story takes place between Circles of Sight and Willing Harvest. Reading it in that order will give you additional context, and certain moments may land with greater impact, especially once you reach Definitely Not a Hero’s Journey. You’ll notice things Amy doesn’t, and there’s a particular kind of fun in watching a POV character slowly piece together what you already suspect.
However, that approach also softens some of the intended mystery and undercuts the unreliable narrator element. For that reason, I’ve placed this story later in the series.
You may find it more satisfying to wait and read A Gift of Death after Definitely Not a Hero’s Journey is complete (which I hope to finish within the next three months). Doing so might even give you a reason to revisit the series with fresh eyes.
