The Golden Land is just as Othere told them it would be: the soil is rich and healthy, and the forests teem with game. On that first day, Ubbe and the other men cut down trees and start building rough shelters; Torvi and the women clear away the brush and cook fresh-caught fish over the fire. While the adults busy themselves with the settlement, Asa slips away and follows the stream to hidden places in the woods. She collects smooth stones and feathers and tucks flowers behind her ears.
During the day it is not so bad. At night, it is different. When the shadows grow long and the sun dips below the horizon, they all become different people in the dark.
