Rand al'Thor has sent out a public amnesty for men who can channel while, in private, he and his trusted companions must decide where to focus their attention, as rumors swirl about dangers in Andor and Illian.
What if this were a battle? Thom had asked, after they'd laid the situation out before him, the true extent of what they were facing against the Forsaken. Cairhien is abuzz with your victories. So, General Cauthon, what advice would you give a man in Rand's position?
And Mat wasn't a general, far from it, but too many of them lived in his head now, in bits and pieces of memories. So he knew that a confrontation could come in many forms. Given the dangers facing them — best to go for distraction and a feint, and then a knife in the ribs, literal or metaphorical. That was Mat's advice.
Find a way to whittle down the number of enemies we need to face.

The Aelfinn tell Mat that he must tie himself to the Lord of the Morning if he doesn't want to be tamed and chained by the Daughter of the Nine Moons, but he struggles with accepting fate and trying to defy it. Rand has a complicated relationship with Asmodean and his duty, but the person he's always longed to be with is Mat.
The thought of tying himself to Rand should’ve been plainly a gladdening one, because he did want in every way to belong to him. Only, around Rand, Mat could no longer tell whether whatever the Pattern sent his way was a noose or a gift. Most of the time it did not matter—because it was Rand, and Mat had wanted him too long to be smart about anything around him—which he suspected was part of the problem. Some of his feelings for Rand were so deeply profound that Mat worried he would do foolish things—would trip into a pit of his own design and think falling was living.

Rand paused a moment.
Elayne and Mat were tangled up on the pallet — Elayne had fallen asleep waiting for Rand to return, and was curled around Mat comfortably. That spill of warm golden hair across Mat's chest, the way that Mat was touching her face and staring down at her.
It felt like Rand was seeing a vision of the future, after he was gone. Would they get married? Would Mat become the… the Prince-Consort of Andor? Have children, maybe? Mat was so good with his sisters. And Elayne would want girls, to continue the Trakand rule of Andor. A tiny girl with Elayne's dimple and Mat's dark curls. Rand almost felt like he could see her, looking at the two of them like this.
