Too slow, or just too tired to care, he wasn’t sure which it was; either way, the gasp she let out when she saw his back was the same one he heard every time someone new took in the thick, ropey scars littering his skin. He moved on instinct then, sinking down on to his couch while reaching for the shirt he’d discarded there, readying to pull it on to keep her from having to see any more of the horrors he’d endured at the hands of his own father. But she had moved too, and that’s when everything changed.
