Images of Sophie—frustrated and hurt by his offer—flashed through his mind. Tears threatening to spill down her cheeks, stoic expressions, and guarded gazes haunted his thoughts.
But he could also recall her secret smiles every time she saw him appear in front of her while she was working. The passionate embraces, the erotic sounds that slipped from her throat, the tender touches, and all the contented moments they shared.
“Sometimes,” he admitted in a small voice, a response as truthful as it could get. He couldn't lie to his sister.
She grew thoughtful at that. “Doesn't she deserve better than sometimes?”

I know it will. As the phrase kept echoing in her head, Sophie believed the words to be true. Benedict was certainly talking from his own experience. She could almost imagine him looking at his own sketch of her, or rather the lady in silver, reminiscing about their time together and hoping to find her again. How much had he hurt because of her?
His eyes never left hers as he continued. “And keep in mind that if your thoughts drift to me, mine are already consumed by you. All day, every day.”

And yet, they were the most beautiful kites she had ever seen.
Benedict studied her in silence for a few seconds before he addressed her. “Have you ever flown a kite, Miss Baek?”

They made their way to your brother’s house a while ago, and they won’t be back until later tonight,” she politely said, avoiding his gaze and opting to look to her right, studying the detailed marble balustrade she was gripping with all of her strength.
It was no surprise to her when he quickly ascended the stairs to meet her, stopping just one step below. “That's even better, then,” he said in a sudden lower and almost whispery voice, one that made her clench her thighs. “I was hoping there would come a day when we would finally be alone again.”
She raised her eyes to meet his own bright ones, hating the way she immediately felt her breath quickening at the sight of him standing so close to her. His hand rested on the balustrade, almost touching hers, and Sophie could feel all the little hairs on the back of her neck go erect at the prospect of him grasping her hand. Just one touch, and it would be more than enough for her.
Maybe. Maybe she would need way more than just a single touch.
