“I’m surprised Dot Dot hasn’t hit you yet,” The Captain mused, rubbing his chin and looking greatly entertained. “He usually doesn’t let strangers pet him, even less so hold him…”
Dot Dot’s green eyes looked up at Luffy, unbothered. The boy knew – in the same way that he knew that the Sea was a nice lady, or that he knew to trust Ace and Sabo and his crew – that the feline would not hurt him. Not even if he were to annoy him during one of his naps or buried his face into his fur to enjoy its softness.
Luffy wondered if Dot Dot would like to join his crew?
“Anyway!” Crocus barked at them. Quick as lighting, the old doctor pinched Sabo and Ace’s ear and tugged. Hard. “You kids need to rest!”
“No offense, Doc’”, Ace said through gritted teeth as he gently batted the man’s hand away, “But we–”
Out of the blue, Ace’s voice dropped and so did his body.
If not for Luffy and Sabo’s reflexes, the oldest would have crashed onto the floor. As it was, he had already ended face-first into the ground enough today for his brothers to take pity on him.
Even though Luffy had grown accustomed to it (and having to catch Ace before he fell face first onto the ground had greatly helped train his aim), he was surprised to see that Sabo still reacted as quickly as before.
Some habits never died, uh?
“Kid?! Kid, are you okay?!”
“CROCUS?! DID THE KID JUST DROPPED DEAD?!”
“CALM DOWN, ROGER! He’s still breathing–”
“See, Koala, I am not the one with the worst timing…” Sabo muttered as he readjusted his hold onto his brother.
Another fit of giggles bubbled up Luffy’s throat. Ace had always fallen asleep at the worst possible times.
Hell, even Gramps had better timing than that!
There was no doubt that Luffy was greatly enjoying the sight of Ace being carried like a bag of potatoes on Sabo’s shoulder.
Something warm made Luffy’s heartstrings play a sweet, comforting melody. The last time they had seen Sabo, the boy could never have held Ace up this easily. He could have given him a piggyback ride, perhaps, but it was impressive to see how strong the blond had become.
Luffy was so proud of him.
“Hurry! Bring him to the infirmary and–”
“Please calm down, Doctor. He’s okay,” Sabo placated, nodding at Luffy to follow him. “We’re used to this, just like we’re used to Lu’s powers.”

Not bothering to wait for new questions to be directed his way (stubborn, hotheaded, Sabo and Ace are just as stubborn), the blond made his way back to the infirmary with Ace on his shoulder and Luffy on his heel.
Keeping Dot Dot tight against his chest, Luffy looked around as they walked further down in the ship’s bowels. He already missed the fresh air and the ocean smell, but Ace had never liked being stared at when he woke from one of his ‘sleep attacks’, as Luffy called them.
A soft meow broke the silence and Luffy whined back at his new friend. “I knooooow… I’m hungry too! Sa–! Bluuuuue, I’m hungry!”
“I know, Lu… But our priority right now is Hiken, so bear with it a little longer, okay?”
Stepping in the infirmary, Sabo made a beeline for the bed to lay Ace down gently while Luffy blocked the door with a chair. Dot Dot made a rumbling sound of protest and jumped down, following after the blond. Sabo raised an eyebrow at the cat – who knew what this beast could do?
However, the feline simply purred as he rubbed his head against his leg before joining Ace on the bed and settling himself on top of his chest.
Dot dot was smart – Ace was the best personal heater on board.
“Come over here, I’m going to check your bandages while Hiken’s asleep.”

“Why do we only get two scoops?!” Sabo interrupted, dramatically falling forward over Ace’s head. “This isn’t fair! You don’t love us anymore…”
“Hikeeeeeeeen–” Luffy cried out pitifully, face pressed against the transparent surface protecting the ice cream from his wandering hands. “They have an ice cream tower. It’s bigger than me! I can’t get it with only two scoops! Blue’s right, you don’t love us anymore… If you did, you would get me the super-duper-ice-cream-tower… Alas, I guess you’re not the bestest brother anymore…”
“Hiken’s so cheap…” Buggy sighed so heavily his head fell down and into his hands, his red counterpart nodding approvingly.
The four of them turned their gaze to him, kicked puppy eyes shining at full power. Matching pouts even appeared on their faces, the corners of their mouths trying to lower all the way down to their heels.
Ace smiled at the employee.
“Turns out there’ll only be one double for me please–”
“NOOOOOOO!!!”
“I’M SORRY I TAKE IT BACK I KNOW YOU LOVE US–”
“HIKEN PLEASE–”
“WE’RE SORRYYYYY!! HIKEN–”

“Tell us the story again,” the little menace demanded in a shrill voice, his knees kicking Shanks in the ribs as he scampered up to perch himself on his mamãe’s shoulders.
“Not again,” Ace groaned, making a beeline to his parents, who seemed way too resigned at that request. “Come on, we’ve heard it thousands of times. Even Sabo agrees, don’t you Sabo?” As if Sabo would ever decline a request from his little brother.
“It’s better than hearing the story of Noland for the hundredth time in a day,” Sabo snarked, enjoying the outrage on his brother’s face at the betrayal. Truly, it wasn’t like each of them didn’t have a favourite story they demanded out of their parents and brothers again and again. Luffy just happened to be more vocal about his own.
“Very well. But it’s Rayleigh’s time to tell it. I’ve told it the last ten times.” Roger announced with a long suffering groan, picking Ace up and swinging him over his shoulders. Sometimes he regretted telling the boys what had been dubbed as THE STORY, but in a way it would have been impossible not to share it. Not when all of them were happy and hale, on the deck of the Oro Jackson, thanks to that impossible succession of events.

Crocodile had pointed out that it wasn’t his or Mihawk’s fault that Buggy had – somehow – under packed for the oceans they’d be crossing, until he realised Mihawk’s tight expression from within the roll of blankets was a scowl.
The Little Top is crossing through some icy waters, and Crocodile is the only one unaffected.

Neither of them look afraid, and that does terrible things to Rayleigh’s chest. “You know we can, old man, we’ve done it before, why are you—““Quiet.” Rayleigh triple checks the knot, as if he needs to, as if it isn’t an anxiety-fed reflex to make his heartbeat slow down. The rope is new, sturdy. It will take a lot to break it.
Fuck, seas and souls, the rope could break. The rope could break, and the ocean will take anyone, will take little red-topped bodies as well as little blue-topped ones, will take any excuse to kill and Buggy can’t swim.
A deadly enemy with a fixation on children is after the Oro Jackson. Roger and Rayleigh will do what they need to in order to keep their cabin boys safe.
